Members pinecone Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 I've been using a BBS II on a 4wt rod for a couple of years now and have been very pleased. A nice light reel that is a good value. I need a new reel for a 5wt Sage and would like the BBS III but have concerns about the fact that the BBS's are now being made in China as opposed to the ones made in England such as I now have. Can anyone tell me if the quality is still as good? I really don't need a large/mid arbor so my next choice would probably be a Ross Cimmaron at about $50 more.
catman Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 I just picked up a Orvis Battenkill Mid-Arbor III for my 5wt. and I'm very pleased with and I think you would be also, the drag system is great when you need it. I also have a BBS but in a III on my 3/4wt rod, and like you say, very pleased with mine also. My Mid-Arbor was made in Korea, the quality is very good, no complaints. The box was marked made in Korea, but nowhere was it marked on the reel made in Korea. Sorry for the long rant, I just like Orvis reels. Take a look at the Orvis Mid-Arbor III it works nice. I was born at night, but not last night. Odds are with the prepared...
timsfly Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 I hate to admit it but the china made orvis reels seem as good as the english made reels, I sell a lot of both the BBS reels and the mid arbour and both are well made and have good drags. Either one you get should preform just fine. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
Danoinark Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 You mentioned the Ross Cimarron. I use one with my Sage 5wt. It balances well and is a fine reel. I also like Orvis reels too. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
trout fanatic Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 I too have a mid arbor III. Just got it today as a matter of fact (so no longetivity reports for awhile). Seems solid, well built and very smooth. For the record, my box also says made in Korea with no other indicators on the reel itself. Now waitin for my rio selective trout DT to get here and I'm good to go.
catman Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I also have the Rio selective trout on my Mid-Arbor III and you will love it...I did the WFF I was born at night, but not last night. Odds are with the prepared...
Greg Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I have a Battenkill bar stock IV and mine is the one made in Korea. I do really like the reel. I've only had it a few months but it's been great in that brief time. I've got a Ross Cimarron too and although I like it also - I do like the Barstock a little better. Reason? The drag on the barstock seems a little smoother and more adjustable. It's a little lighter. And I like the sound (click) better. Both great reels though. The Teton Tioga is a good reel too and right in that price range.
