motroutbum Posted January 31, 2006 Posted January 31, 2006 How ignorant can people be. Seriously!!!! Fish don't feel pain in the same way as a dog or a cat or a human. I'd like to see the Trout fisherman that hooks a trout and pulls it behind a boat while it water skiis along. motroutbum for PETA....(People Eating Tasty Animals)! There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Members KRflyfisher Posted January 31, 2006 Members Posted January 31, 2006 Well if fish feel pain or not, I don't know. I do know that if you go to the mall you'll find plenty of people walking around with hooks in their lips and they don't seem to mind! PETA folks are either just stupid, or severly misinformed. I heard a report just the other day about Giant Beavers invading Chile and how this is a real ecological threat to them because the trees down there take so much longer to grow than they do up here. So to save the rainforests, they are trying to trap the beavers. Guess who is against it all! PETA. SAVE THE BEAVERS, kill the rainforest! That's a new twist, huh?
ecce38 Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 In grad school, I spent an entire semester writing my masters thesis on just this topic. The PETA people are way off the mark with wanting to ascribe "rights" to animals like fish. Feeling "pain" is neither a sufficient nor necessary condition for having rights (that's philosophy speak for saying they lack a certain moral standing). Yet, it doesn't follow that just because an animal lacks "rights" that we may do what we want to them. My dog doesn't have rights per se, but obviously it would be morally wrong to torture her just for the fun of it. My experience has been that most anglers, especially catch-n-release anglers, value the fish they catch and accord them with proper respect. Thus, I think we ought to give ourselves a pat on the back. But the PETA spokesman was right when he said, "Fish socialize with each other and have very long-term memories." darn straight they do! I'm pretty sure that they've tipped each other off on occasion when they saw my fly go by.... Members Bobby M. Posted February 3, 2006 Members Posted February 3, 2006 I dont know if anyone else saw this, but there was, and may still be, a billboard along hwy 65 N between Branson and Springfield, it had a dog with a hook in its mouth, the caption read something like this, if you wouldn't do it to your dog, then why do it to fish.
Randall Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 i haven't seen any billboards like that, but it is a little offensive. i really don't see where people get off trying to pass animal rights and tell us how wrong and inhumane hunting and fishing are. if anybody has watched the national geographic channel, they know how predatory animals treat their prey. i promise you that when i harvest game animals, and the occasional fish, they feel much less pain than the deer brought down by a pack of wolves. as for catch and release, as long as the fish is treated gently and released in good health, i don't see problem... it'll take the same bait/lure/fly again, i've seen it happen all an animal rights activist is is a misguided fool that needs to get in touch with reality and grow a brain. one more thing, i would be willing to bet that a good portion of those people have pets. how can they preach to us when they have no problem tearing an infant animal away from its mother and placing it in a foreign environment? Cute animals taste better.
