loo10 Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 One of the most interesting bits of info I found out tonight, was that the Missouri Hellbender, on the Federal endangered species list is keeping the hatcheries and stockers from producing more brown trout. It appears that in Southern Missouri's trophy spring creeks, such as the Niangua, NF of the W, and others that the hellbender is the primary food source and that the Missouri Dept of Resources have an agreement with the Feds to not stock more browns than the present numbers in any of the spring fed rivers. Dano, That wasnt what Mr Civello said during the tour. What he said was, due to the fact that browns eat the hellbenders and appear to be causing a decrease in the hellbender population in waters where they have been introduced; an agreement has been reached to not introduce brown trout to any new waters in the state. It has nothing to do with the amount of browns produced, stocked, etc. It has everything to do with the new introductions or new brown trout expansion. That said, it pretty much ends any debate at this time of any brown's being stocked in the Eleven Point as has been mentioned previously in the forum on another post. loo10 Rich Looten Springfield, Missouri "If people don't occasionally walk away from you shaking their heads, you're doing something wrong."- John Gierach

They will produce at the least the same amount of brown trout, but not to use in the expansion of the program into those waters containing the hellbender.
