Greg Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 Brian I agree with you and I'll also add that personally I'll fish my more expensive rods (I don't own many at all) harder because all of them have a lifetime guarantee. One of my favorite rods is a custom built graphite rod. I really love the rod and it really didn't cost much but because it was custom made only the blank (not the rod itself) has a guarantee. If I break it the manufacturer will replace the blank - but I have to pay to have it rebuilt or try to do it myself. I only own one really expensive rod (the Sage SLT) and it was purchased at a deep discount. But I'm really not that afraid of breaking it because I know if I do Sage will replace it for a really modest fee. And I do know this lifetime warranty is built into the price but that's another issue entirely...... drew03cmc Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Yes, it is built in...but can you go without that particular rod, if that is your only one, for weeks waiting for a rod to show up in the mail. Also, if they do not have that particular rod in stock at the time, they replace it with something "comparable" in Orvis' words. This is why I want my glass rod collections to grow so I can fish rods that will not crack if I drop them on a streamside rock or anything. I think the next rod I will have to buy is a glass st. croix rod. Andy
Greg Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Hate to disagree but actually I can go without that rod for a period of time or even the same day that I would happen to break it. I always carry a backup and so do most other fly fisherman that I know. That's what a backup is for. As far as the manufacturer not treating you right when you have a breakage - I can only speak for one experience with breaking a guaranteed rod and in that instance they treated me right. I'm sure what you are talking about may happen but I hope that is not the case particularly with Sage. But (and maybe I'm jinxing myself here) for me it's kind of a moot point. In 30+ years of fly fishing I've only broken 2 rods. And both were quite some time ago. One was actually a glass rod and the other was a high end graphite back when graphite was fairly new and having "growing pains". I just don't think breakage is that common - especially breakage while fishing. Others experiences may be different. Just my .02 for whatever it is worth. Members pepper46 Posted December 18, 2007 Members Posted December 18, 2007 I know too well what you are talking about Terry! At least we could buy a gallon of gas with less than $2.85 now.....and I do believe that would be enough gas to get me to the river! Brian you must live close to the river

Greg Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Brian I just got the new cabela's catalog and spotted some of the new g. loomis models. The eastfork really caught my eye. Really nice looking rod. Have you seen or cast one? Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Brian Wise Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Yeah Greg, nice looking rod. That is one of the rods they are throwing at the Best of the West this year....prepare to see Rajeff go crazy with this rod. I like the rod and all but how the rod handled didn't just JUMP out at me as being my new favorite rod. I do think it is cool that the reel seat is the same color as the Eastfork reel that Loomis puts out...that would look pretty sexy. I am going to give the Eastfork reels a shot but with my stroke (insanely aggresive) the Eastfork was a little slow. But that is coming from someone that would cast a broomstick and call it too slow.
