Members SLIPPERY SI Posted October 11, 2007 Members Posted October 11, 2007 well guys, if you remember back in March, i was taking a trip to eleven mile canyon in colorado. i returned quit a while ago and have finally found time to get the pics from the camera to my pc. the funny thing i found about this trip, was how the local fly shops sold me a "few" dollars worth of phesant tailed nymphs, blue winged olives..etc..etc...but when it came down to it, majority of my fish were caught on scuds that i had originally tied for taneycomo trips!!! the canyon was beautiful and it was an excellent experience!! it seemed like every turn the canyon took, it was another honey hole waiting..just wasnt enough hours in the day to get'em all!! attached are a few of my favorite pics!!
flyfishmaster Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Slippery, I have fished The Canyon at least 10 times and loved every trip. What I like about going there is that guides are not allowed to take their clients there (unless that has changed over the last couple of months). So you don't have to compete for some great spots. You are right about the flies. Most Missouri stream patterns will work, the best producers are the Trico (and spinner), Mercury Pheasant tail and Hares Ear. I'm glad you enjoyed this great part of the South Platte River. The 3 tunnels are cool too. One time we got caught in a hail storm there and we all had to scrabble up a very steep embank to find shelter in one of the tunnels. With in 30 minutes it was over, the ground was covered with hail and we slid back down the hill and started nailing the fish. Woo Hoo Fish On!!
jay bird Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Did you get to fish the stretch of water between the two lake Eleven mile and Spinney?
Daddy Carp Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 My wife and I were there and remember several of the spots in your photos. We had a wonderful time and thought that the canyon & drive were among the most beautiful in the area. I'm sure some things are different now but most still the same. We were there in about '68 or '69. Boy!! How time flies!!! Now that I think about it, I'll start getting old in a few years....LOL LOL. Loved your pictures, brought back great memories. D.C.
Greg Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Nice photos. Glad you had a good trip and thanks for sharing. It's amazing how well some of our MO patterns work elsewhere. I've also had good luck out of state with scuds, zebras, cracklebacks, and mohair leeches. Can I ask about access to that area? Did you float through the canyon or is it a wading access? Thanks again, Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
jay bird Posted October 14, 2007 Posted October 14, 2007 I spent a week up at this area and it was great. There is a ton of different type of fishing. The pictures are from Eleven mile canyon which has a good road with good campgrounds in the canyon right by the river. The other area is eleven mile reservoir. This is more open type fly-fishing between eleven mile reservoir and spinney reservoir on the south platte river. This portion of the river winds through the high plains with great mountains in the background. Great fishing at both areas, but eleven mile canyon is something special as you can see by the pictures.
