Zach...

In my opinion..

when to fish a softie ...

when you see the fish midging..... alot of people fish Taney with midges.. but I think soft hackles produce better for me...

as for as color goes.. I like the black the best.. next would be red.. then the P&P..

I probably fish more soft hackles on Taney than any other fly. If I had to just carry one color, it would be a size 16 or 18 light olive and partridge.

To add to what Leonard said, if the answer to Dano' question Is yes? :)

Is that they also make good searching patterns for say swinging through the riffles. And for this I would use a pattern with alittle more "hay over here"

say a Partridge and orange or the Greenbutt.

Good luck stick a few for us that are not able to make it there quite yet.

Zack, tie up some #16 Soft Hackle Gold-ribbed Hare's Ear Nymphs as sparsely as you can dub them. You can swing them like a traditional wet fly, drift them under an indicator like a rising midge (light tippet and about 18-20" below the indicator regardless of water depth), slap on a tiny split shot and fish them as a nymph, or even strip them after a downstream cast. Very versatile and the trout all over the Ozarks love them. You can tie them in 18-20s if you love torturing yourself. Those work really well on Taneycomo.

Zach here is a thread I posted earlier that gives you a link to John Berry's Green Butt....

John Berry was gracious enough to post his green butt pattern in one of Phil's articles.

If you have never fished SH's I encourage you to do so.

Actually for any new fly fishing enthusiast its a great way to get started and begin catching trout right off. At the same time you are helping preserve a long time tradition as soft hackle's, spiders and wet flies certainly predate any modern nymph of today. In the article John gave an excellent description of fishing a soft hackle on the swing. The end results are monstrous takes when the trout hits the fly. I carry more soft hackles than anything and fish them almost exclusively. You need to give it a try.

You didn't get John to tie you up a green butt at Conclave?
