Danoinark Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 On a thread about Soft Hackles last week, Zach brought up the fact he would like to see "that" flybox. Well, due to a newly diagnosed upper back and neck problem I suppose I have been eliminated from carrying any weight bearing loads on my shoulder ie; my 5lb vest and stuff or chest packs etc. I am now in the process of learning how to minimize my "stuff" that I carry in my wading jacket or a fishing shirt. I have gotten my 4 flyboxes that I typically carry down to 2 and when the warm spring and summer days are back with us I suspect that box will be down to one. Are you a minimilist? Are you able to carry JUST WHAT you need to the stream? Tell us how you do it. Here is a picture of the two boxes I am now carrying. One for midges and soft hackles, the other for everything else. troutchaser Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Don't go minimalist, Dano. Get a Sherpa! since you mentioned it, I only carry two fly boxes. One is for dries and soft hackles, the other is for midges, nymphs, and miscellanea. I never seem to be found lacking for the right fly, so I consider it a very effective system. I do use a tech vest, but I've been known to move the essentials to a homemade neck lanyard for quick trips. I'll add a picture of it if you're interested. Paul Rone

Scientific Anglers makes a thin (1/4") that is magnetic and holds a lot of flies. Going thru the same thing....trying to figure out how to carry all my gear, so I will be interested to see the suggestions. 3wt Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I carry a dry fly box (C&F) a wet/nymph box, and a streamer wallet. The wallets are great for large flies that won't get lost in the fleece, and tend to hold a lot of water, so putting them in a box would be a bad idea anyway. These are very light weight. Within these I carry way more then I ever use/need in any given trip. Here's the thing, I stock up on the go-to flies, of which I have around 5-10, and only have a couple of the what-if flies. Keep your real stock in the car, if you get in a bind, take the 5 minute walk, and restock the box. Here's what my real minimalist friend uses: http://www.flytedeck.com/ It's basically a flybox on a chestpack with a pouch, and some zingers and bottle holders. He uses the box and a wallet for streamers. You won't know it's there. I'm not ready to give up my vest yet, but I think this, in conjunciton with wader pockets would actually suit all my needs.
