Tightline Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I caught a nice 18 inch Brown last tuesday afternoon that had a midge in its upper lip and it had almost completely grown into the fishs flesh. So much for them rusting away in a few days.I tried that little midge and did very well on it for about an hour, then decided to take it off before I lost it.Took a pic of it when I got home. I went to tie it on last friday mourning, when it was so cold, and dropped it in Taney. So if any of you guys can tell me what its called I'll get more.Is the bead head copper that has just tarnished?I know its not a very good pic,but its the best my camera will do.
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 don't know the name for sure, but it looks to have a black (maybe tungsten) bead head, red thread and ribbed with black wire. Should be fairly simple to tie. I'll defer to the more experienced for the name. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Danoinark Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I think that is what is called the Rusty Midge. Rusty thread, black tung bead, and fine black wire for ribbing. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Rusty Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I think that is what is called the Rusty Midge. Rusty thread, black tung bead, and fine black wire for ribbing. Dano Yep
back2roots Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 Ditto Dano.....Rusty Midge. One of the few I've actually learned to tie, fish AND catch with! See Ya, Bill If you liked the sound....Thank the engineer!
Tightline Posted November 5, 2007 Author Posted November 5, 2007 Thanks guys,as soon as I get set up properly I will be tying my own. What I need the most is a large magnifier with a light around the back side, but for now I'll keep the fly shops in business. That Rusty midge did well for a while, they would hit it some times before it would sink all the way, of course they may have been hitting any kind or color of midge at that paticular time. Thanks again, Tightline.
Greg Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 The rusty midge is a deadly one. I always carry a few. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
flyfshn Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 Tightline, you can get one of those magnifier lights at your local wally world. The come with a long extendable arms and clamp. I use a florescent(sp?) bulb in mine and it works great on the smaller flies! Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery.
