I don't know if Arkansas, Mo, or the border states recognize this or not. I do see jurisdictional problems and other issues. Dano

From Singlebarb's Blog

"I didn’t know" may not be as good a defense as it once was…

tiplogo It behooves us anglers to do some additional homework, especially when traveling out of state. Seven years ago, six western states created the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, which allows convicted poachers to have their hunting or fishing privileges revoked in all member states simultaneously.

Now the compact numbers 26 states, with 10 additional contemplating joining.

Unfamiliarity will not qualify you as a hardened poacher, but I wouldn’t take any chances, especially if you’re planning some much anticipated pilgrimage to Montana or Alaska. Each state exchanges its poacher information and your home state will be notified if you’re convicted out of state. It’s the “Angling Interpol” and it’s snaking it’s way to your doorstep.

“Oh, man, it killed me,” said Thurman, of Boise, who missed annual fishing trips this summer to Washington, Oregon and Montana. “It canceled my privilege of going into the mountains, really.”

It’s safe to assume that any fish related to those Mr. Thurman was convicted of snagging were doing somersaults of grief…

What’s unique to this process is the law you violated may not be against the law in your home state. It won’t matter, local authorities will revoke your license just the same.

What’s incumbent on us angling louts is to ensure we pick our fishing buddies carefully, some Brother-In-Law with a “heat on” may be stupid enough to get the both of you in trouble.

It’s one thing to step on my rod while inebriated, we’re blood kin - and I can overlook that…but you get my license suspended for a year, and once free of the courthouse - you’ll sleep with the fishes.

I will apologize profusely to your sister…

Just how does it work when you get your hunting or fishing privilege revoked?

Of all the times I have purchased one in my home state or another state, I have yet to see anyone check a list to confirm my name was or was not on it.

Apparently you haven't purchased a fishing or hunting liscense in Missouri becase there is a data base here that is accessed before any permit is issued or license , the yelow tag you recieve, before it is approved. Thats is how they reissue your fishing license if you lose it or check on your permit status if you tell a warden if you left it at home.

I know Texas and Florida have that same process and you can even purchase a license from home online but you are first checked for outstanding citations or violations.

Great system and it does eliminate the poachers getting back into the system before their suspension is played out.

Well, Tom I have been purchasing a resident license for the state of Missouri all of my life. Well, not quite all of it, not the fist 15 of them anyway.

And as with any state, that I have purchased resident or nonresident license from, you are not required to show ID. Therefore if you are crooked enough to violate the law to the extent to have your privilege revoked, I'm quite certain you may be crooked enough to circumvent the system and purchase a license to at least appear to be following the law.

Should we then be required to show positive ID to purchase hunting and fishing license? I don't have a problem with that. Any honest person shouldn't.

Look at your license Graybear. It has your name address and all of the info that is required to establish who you are. I will guarnatee if you are questoned by a warden when being stopped for a violation the first thing he asks for is your drivers license. When the poacher is caught he is asked by the warden to prove his idenity. That is how the system works.

I was involved in the prosecution of an individual from Iowa who had this happen to him at Bennet Springs. He was told in no uncertain terms that he would either produce the information asked for or spend the night in jail. Believe me Name address city of residence is all that is needed to get 20 pages of information about an individual and you gave it or will give it if you get caught or are prosecuted.

I purchase licenses in 5 states almost every year and am always asked for a drivers license to show what state my residence is in. That is how reciprocal state rules are determined.

If one is caught doing an illegal act you are correct. As written, your post it 100% correct. The key they were seen to be doing something illegal.

But in my experiences all they have ever done is check to see that I do have a valid hunting or fishing license. Twice in Missouri and once in OK in the about 25 years that I have purchased them. The one and only time my driver license was checked was a check point established and manned by a number of Conservation Agents. As my family and I drove into a CA, we were stopped and I was asked for my driver license. They ran their check for warrants and such and we were on our way.

BTW Tom, hunting and fishing license are great gift items. One may be purchased for the giftee with out being present.

In Oklahoma, as of last year, they were still hand written. No check of any type.

I'm not trying to get into a pissing match with you, just pointing out that it is very easy to get around the system as it is now.

I agree. Lots more could be done to insure that the few who abuse the system are identified and prosecuted. I think Dano's original remarks indicated that it seems that some states are cracking down and we all will eventually pay the price for those who abuse the system.

Kind of like the traffic laws. Let someone drive carelessly at 90 miles an hour and have a terrible accident and the first thing they do is lower the speed limit to 55 mph and punish those who were already going 60 or 65 and driving with care like they were supposed to.

Hey GB! Have a great day partner

I hear ya Thom. I hope when you prosecute them, you go for the max, which I believe to not be enough. Hit them in the pocket book hard. Now I fully understand that there will be honest mistakes, and those I can forgive as long as the lesson is learned. One should not take a show of kindness as a sign of weakness though.

Soldier on my friend.
