Members CanoeDave Posted November 15, 2007 Members Posted November 15, 2007 I am a newbie, just finishing my first season of fly fishing. I am about to begin tying my flies for next year (my plan is to tie 90% of my flies over the winter months). I'm wanting to visit Taneycomo in July of next year and wondered if my 18 local patterns would be ok, or do I need to tie something different the trip? I hope to fish in the area below the RV Park around Pointe Royale where we're staying. If I'm posting in a wrong forum, just let me know the appropriate forum and I'll go there. Thanks in advance: Crackleback, size 16 Griffith's Gnat, 18 & 22 Traditional Midge Pupae, 20 & 22 Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear, 14, 16, 18 Whitlock Fox Squirrel, 14, 16, 18 Herl Nymph,, 14, 16, 18 Muskrat Nymph, 14, 16, 18 Scud Nymph, 14, 16 San Juan Worm, 10, 12 Woolly Bugger, 10, 16 Muddler Sculpin Minnow, 6, 10 Maribou Streamer Minnow (Beadhead), 12, 14 Foam Spider, 10 Foam Beetle, 12, 16 Madame-X Hopper, 6, 12 Woolly Worm, 12, 16 Soft Hackle, 16, 18
troutchaser Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Wow! You're bound to catch something with a selection like that. I'd probably recommend adding zebra midges, black, red and primrose. Paul Rone
Members Muleball39 Posted November 15, 2007 Members Posted November 15, 2007 I would have to agree about the zebra midges also, I hope your not putting up you fly fishing stuff yet. Some of the best fishing is still to be had especially in the winter when nobody is on the lakes and rivers. Plus it is really beautiful fishing with a snow on.
jjtroutbum Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I don't know why but I seem to have my best luck with Cracklebacks in size 12 Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. I plan on fishing all winter. Thank you (everyone) for the wonderful feedback!!!
flyfshn Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 I agree with Troutchaser and Muleball on the midges and JJtroutbum on size 12 for cracklebacks, but I also tie them in size 14. I would also tie some olive zebra midges. Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. If your going to do some winter fishing... add color... something white or light gray... Next.. sowbugs... and eggs... the rainbow spawn is about to start... Leonard http://www.taneycomonights.com
Members D.T. Posted November 16, 2007 Members Posted November 16, 2007 Dave, Where you are fishing at Point Royal is exclent for midges. I have fished it several times from the access down to the homes and it was always black zebras I never had to change flies.I had to adjust depth and weight according to generation from 12 inches to 5 feet. Also try up river from the access to right below the island Lots of bugs get washed in there when the water comes around the point of that island area (actualy not a full island when water is not running). Good luck, Dave
Members CanoeDave Posted November 16, 2007 Author Members Posted November 16, 2007 I will definitely add Zebra Midges to my tying list. What sizes are best? Also, regarding Cracklebacks, what colors are best? Thanks. - Dave K. I just found a link on tying midges. It looks like size 14 and 16 is recommended. Micheal Kyle Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 I do very good on cream and furnace, and peacock and cream cracklebacks. Cream and peacock are the body and furnace and cream are the hackle. Size 12 and 14 are my favorite. Fish them when there is chop on the water stripping them back as fast as you can. I have had 100 fish days when fishing them like that. Now thats when I fish all day from daylight to dusk. I even think that there are some people that have fished them at night and do well on them. They just tie them on a larger hook like an 8 or a 6. To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
