catman70 Posted February 3, 2006 Posted February 3, 2006 Just looking for any info on how it's been on the lake lately. Probably gonna be tough on account of the cold front coming through this weekend, but thought I'd ask anyway. Probably just hit the commercial doocks in search for crappie. On a different topic: How do you catch shad in deep water? I usually use a throw net in the fair weather months. Is it just snagging them? If so, what kind of rig?
Members Simsmarine Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 I got out for some crappie fishin' before it turned cold. Did pretty good around 8-12ft. brushpiles. As for netting shad when they aren't surfacing in the lake: I see quite a few guys throwing nets from the bank just below the dam (north side) in the winters. I assume they are getting some there.
Members Bigmagic Posted February 27, 2006 Members Posted February 27, 2006 You need to get a net with at least 5/8" mesh. I have a 20ft net that I use that gets them out of the deeper water(up to 25ft) where they lay on the bottom in winter. Below Truman Dam in Drake Harbor if the current is running there are always shad there. I was out Friday and the shad were on the bottom just off the point where the old channel meets the new below Truman. Hope this helps and good luck with the cattin and let the big ones go.
