Hey guys, my boss just walked in and gave me a fly tying kit for x-mas (i know, great boss!). It has all the tools i will need so i am looking for some basic materials to start tying. Also if there are any good websites for a beginner that would be good to know as well. Thanks

Where do you live?

There's probably a tyer who lives nearby that could use another friend.

Each of the sites in the "Links to Fly Recipe Sites" subforum are good. As far as materials, I would figure out which flies I wanted to tie and get just the materials to tie those flies.

So you bring up a good point. I also got some fly tying stuff for Christmas (used to tie flies years ago). I want to tie flies that I will use.

So, Besides zebra midges, scuds, sowbugs, and wooley bugers, what should be tying for Bennett (most likely to fish) and Tannycomo (less likely)?

Thanks,

For Bennett, I'd probably tie some #16, 18 renegades, #12, #14 cracklebacks in several colors, Hare's ear nymphs in several sizes, red pheasant tail nymphs, lots of sizes, and for those times when they just won't hit anything, I'd have some peach glo balls on hand. For my personal favorite on Bennett or Taneycomo I'd recommend soft hackles in yellow, orange, olive, brown, maybe black and cream.

Oh, and griffith's gnats.

For Bennett, don't forget San Juan worms, size 16 or 18 scud hook in Ultra tan, brown, olive, red and pink. Cut them about 1" long and burn the ends to give them a roundish end. Quick, easy and cheap to make.
