Greg Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 I posted a Bennett fishing report on my blog if anyone is interested. Thanks, Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Snow Fly Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Greg: Were you driving a suburban and parked at the swimming pool parking lot? If so I was parked next to you in the black 4 door Ford pickup. We talked for a short while. "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
Greg Posted December 31, 2007 Author Posted December 31, 2007 No I don't think that was me. I drive an older Dodge Intrepid. And I parked up at the other end by the bathrooms up at the spring. How was you day of fishing? Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Snow Fly Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Oh well! thought it might be the same guy. Drove the suburban and it had a companies name on the side rear windows from Springfield Mo. "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
Snow Fly Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Greg: Forgot the fishing report= fished zone 3 and caught around 7 fish with BH Zebras 5 of those were caught on the back side of the same rock...go figure. One advantage to zone 3 = no people except one guy ahead of me and that was it for the 3+ hours there. Usually have better fishing in zone 3 but not today. Went up to fish down from stone arch bridge in the riffles but it would have taken a shoe horn to get another person in that area. Really do like that area, lots of fish usually holding in the rocks. Last went to the big water above the dam and stripped a Crackleback, and caught 3 and missed one strike then nothing "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
brittsnbirds Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Greg- I'll throw my 2 cents into the report. I started up by Gauge house, as I always do, must be a habit. Started getting all of my stuff together and RRRRRRRRR, no vest. I brought everything except my vest and all of my secret weapons that I tied the other day. I dug around in my tote box and found some stuff to try. I started with a Crackleback just dead drifting then strip at the end of the swing, had 1 and that was it. Headed up to Larry's to find some scuds and zebra midges, he only had a couple. Tried them down under the arch bridge and in the short water. Caught a couple on a gray scud sight fishing. Just like you said Snow Fly it was wall to wall down stream. Went down across from the swimming pool but the wind was howling through there with no success. Hit the hole just above the stone arch bridge with a green zonker and started catching a few. Back up at the gauge house I hooked a pig behind a rock on the far bank with a scud. Took my set up so I switched back to a green squirrel zonker that I tie and viola, they tore it up. Only had 2 with me and lost both of them to big fish. I think my tippet is old cause I broke off alot. Not too bad of a day considering. Pat
Greg Posted January 1, 2008 Author Posted January 1, 2008 Snow fly - I've never fished zone 3. I'll have to give it a shot next time down. That's the bait fishing zone during the catch and keep season isn't it? There's some interesting water there if I remember right. Brittsnbirds I had to laugh at your post about forgetting your vest - not at you - but at myself because I did the same thing a couple of years ago on a trip to Bennett. Fortunately I had a few flies stuck in my hat and did OK until I lost all my tippet. Either of you ever fish dries at Bennett? I really had a lot of fun fishing them Sunday. brittsnbirds Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Greg- Would have but........ I actually tied some #26 creme midges but they were at home in the nice warm basement. Pat
Snow Fly Posted January 1, 2008 Posted January 1, 2008 Greg: Yes I have used dries at Bennett with success. Crackelbacks fish good as a dry, Elk Hair Caddis, PMD, Trico and Griffith's Gnat. I to have left my vest at home. I was an hour away from home going to the Current and it hit me hard "NO VEST" I turned around and went home and then headed back to meet up with a friend. The 3 hr drive turned into 5 hrs. My friend thought it was funny until we went on another trip to the Current we started to rig up after the waders were on and guess what? He didn't bring his Rod............I tried to feel sorry for him between laughs. "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
Greg Posted January 1, 2008 Author Posted January 1, 2008 A #26 dry fly? Wow!! I've only tied and used flies down to #22. And I could hardly see those. Generally #20 is about as small as I can go both dry flies and nymphs.
