Brian K. Shaffer Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 I managed to fish an hour or so at a local golf course in one of their secluded ponds. It is way out of the way of golfers.. so there is no way I am gonna get nailed by a little white ball. Today for instance, I caught 4. All relatively small.. but at least it was fishing. I saw one real nice in there.. over 20 inches for sure. I was using a simple shad minnow style pattern that I could see well in the water. All the bass ran up to it and just inhaled it... without missing a beat. I was using my 9ft 5wt and tapered down to about 2X which is 10lb or so tippet. I wasnt casting but maybe 12-15 feet out of the tip of the rod and just seeing it land and stripping it back slow and letting it sink a little. I didnt fish another pond closeby because the water was just really way too low. I didnt see another person fishing there today... but occasionally I see a resident there trying to catch turtles. Strange... I write this though so that maybe you guys would give it a shot at a golf course near you someday. Very easy access.. willing and eager fish.. low pressure (if any) and big fun! Summer popper fishing is just way too easy to do for bass.. and it makes a great switch from Taneycomo trouting. best fishes - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Danoinark Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 The only problem is that ususally you gotta know somebody or be a member to fish these gems. They are normally great for carping too! I love a good farm pond, especially if it hasn't been fished in a long time. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Members Packman Posted February 5, 2006 Members Posted February 5, 2006 ya brian your lucky you didnt get shot at!! I know if you went where I think you did, they have pepper spray, and handguns.
roy_eros Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Last summer me and my friend snuck our poles in our golf bags. We just fished for about 10 minutes but we caught 7 or 8, 12 to 14 inch bass. Pretty good fishing. I would like to spend a little time fishing the pond for a lunker but the management keeps a close eye. FORE!!!!
Kicknbass Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 I carry a 5' telescopic spinning rod in my golf bag. Rigged w/ 8 lb test and a small spinner bait w/ the barb bent down. I bend the barb down, because I don't have any other tackle and need to be able to get the fish of easily. This outfit calapses down to about 8" long and fits in the side pocket of my bag w/ ease. If I am playing a scamble and things slow down near water, the game is on. Many courses have ponds that are loaded w/ small bass. I have caught 5-6 fish waiting for the group in front of us to tee off many times. Two years ago. I was playing a tournament and got hung up on a par 3 waiting for the group in front of us to play out and caught a 4 lb large mouth while waiting. This fish was a bit much for that rod combo. He made several runs smoking the drag. It was hard to stop fishing and start playing golf after that. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
