flyfshn Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Curious about what knot you use to tie your tippet on to your leader? I use a surgeon's knot and I bought some Rio Fluorflex Plus tippet (6x & 7x), but it broke at the knot this weekend. Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Fishmeister Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Blood knot, I have tried both, blood is easier of the two for me to tie. I have friends that think the surgeons is the easier of the two to tie? Use what works for you, both are good knots.
TroutFearMe Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 This might not be the best rig but I tend to just tye a loop on my leader and the tye onto that. I just use a standerd knot and its never failed me.P.S when you tye the loop i use super glue for added knot strength
JobyKSU Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Earlier this spring a gentleman (you know who you are, even though I don't) showed me the orvis tippet know while at Parker Bend. When you examine the knot, it is basically a double-surgeons knot in form, but the tippet exits where the tag end would normally be. This prevents the knot from pulling against itself. I have never had a problem with this knot, and it is easy and quick and purportedly a bit stronger than the surgeons. The Orvis website has a demonstration here. I tie mine by putting each end through once rather than one end twice, but you end up with the same structure. ::. JobyKSU Tippet Breaker Extraordinaire
Members BuschTrout22 Posted January 7, 2008 Members Posted January 7, 2008 Blood knot.. I have tried the surgeons and cant get the hang of it. Plus I like the slim look of the blood knot.. I have read however that the surgeon knot is stronger, but I havent had any issues with the blood knot. Members flyfishinggolfer Posted January 7, 2008 Members Posted January 7, 2008 Rainbow, I use a tyer also. It is lightening quick to join tippet to leader, join leader to fly line and tie a fly to tippet. There are many models. I use the "Tyer". It looks like a gold plated ink pen. The Orvis model is $5.00 more expensive than what you buy elsewhere. They go for $9.99 at BassPro, Cabelas and local fly shops. There is an instruction booklet with it detailing numerous knots it can be used to tie. Once you get the hang of it, you will spend more time fishing and less time tying knots. It is the best $10.00 plus tax I have spent on fly fishing. Fly
