Bittle Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 I'm looking for a good wading jacket. But I need some imput. I see lots of the shell rain jackets. But for the most part, the nice rain jackets that will also keep you warm are rediculously priced. I'm looking for a good rain proof jacket to wade with that will also keep me warm in winter. I was looking at the simms freestone jackets but not sure. Any thoughts?

Micheal Kyle Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 It is hard to find a jacket that will do both and stay with in a certain price range. I would look at the freestone but remember it is not gore-tex so in the warmer weather you might get a little damp underneath because of the breathable factor. You might take a look at the Simms Pac-Lite and or the Classic Guide very reasonable when it comes to price. I really talk about layers and you need to do so with a base, mid and upper layer start with a polypropylene then go to a light fleece from Simms or any other company you like, then on the really cold days going to a heavy fleece for the top layer. You also should consider a win stopper fleece for the top layer. You can actually feel the wind stop makes a huge difference now with all that said with the Classic Guide coat from Simms you can where it all year long as rain coat. When it is warm and or cold as long as you have the proper layers underneath for winter. One very interesting fact from Gore-tex it will not work right when the temperature outside is warmer than your body temperature, it Will suck the moisture right back on top of you. So with that said Gore-TeX is perfect from about 90 degrees-way below zero. Good luck with this I hope you find the perfect jacket. Michael To Know People Is To Know Thier Ways!
Paola Cat Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Just retired an older Cabelas jacket. Purchased a Columbia Queets River Jacket. It's a basic jacket no bells and whistles but seems OK so far through the winter season. Probably not as good as the jackets 3X its price but so far it appears to be a pretty good value. PC Cheers. Kicknbass Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 The Cabelas jackets are hard to beat. Don't worry about a super warm jacket you can and should dress in layers. A dry jacket is important, and a light weight shell in useable in more conditions. I have a Cabelas backcountry. It is breathable and waterproof light and packable. I fished last week in the 20's. With a few layers under the jacket you'll be fine. One feature that is hard to beat is the neoprene cuffs. I won't have another wading jacket w/o neoprene cuffs. The make a huge differance. Good Luck. EB " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"

I use Polortec fleece underneath for warmth. The only thing that would be nice is an interior pocket for car keys, etc. I use my Simms wader pocket for that now. I just could not bring myself to pay 300.00 for a jacket.
