Paola Cat Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Been using a BPS XPS Stalker tackle bag as a fly fishing gear bag for over a year. Works great, no complaints. I use the the end pockets for reels and spools. Use the side pockets for accessories and stuff. Then I fill the interior of the bag with fly boxes, tippet spools, leaders ... etc. Pretty functional. Had used a Cabelas gear bag in the past but it was too small. What do you guys use? PC Cheers. PC
Greg Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I don't use a gear bag. I stuff everything in my Simms vest. The thing probably weighs 30 lbs now! I need to get a gear bag and thin it out. Danoinark Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 PC I have one of the Cabela's gear bags too and I agree its too small for much. They do make a size bigger now. An inexpensive back pack also makes a nice gear bag. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
flyfshn Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I use a backpack I bought from Wally World in the Sporting Goods Dept...think it was $18. Use one compartment for waders/boots, second for my vest and the small one for a first aid kit, spare reel and some other small misc items. Works well but is sometimes hard to zip it up! Fish On! Don Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Waders and boots with spare backups go into a large rubbermaid plastic tote. Flies etc. are in heavily weighted down vest like Greg's. I hope neither of us ever fall in or we'll drown. I also always carry spare clothing in a small canvas bag. Don May Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
Brian Wise Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 I have a Fishpond Cloudburst bag. I do have to say that it was a gift becuase I wouldn't have paid that kind of $$ for it. I really do like the bag, not only sexy but functional. It is considered a gear/boat bag, in the back it has gunwale hooks that can be zipped up to stay out of the way (super cool) and it also has a rain cover that completely covers the bag and then zips away in its own little pouch as well. The only thing is with the rain cover....it only works if it is covering the bag. It's not so big that I don't want to bring it into the drifter but it isn't too small either, just right. Greg Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 Brian thanks for the tip about the fishpond bag. My employees got me a BPS gift certificate for Xmas that I haven't used yet. BPS has that very bag. I may just use it for that. Don is right if I ever fall in with my heavy, overstuffed vest I very well could drown!! 3wt Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I have the outcast wader/gearbag. Only cost about $60. One of the best buys I've made for fishing gear. I would say a decent gear bag is the first thing to buy once you've got all your essentials. It lets me just grab my rod and one bag, and I know I've got everything I need...and I don't get that "what did I forget this time" halfway through the drive to the stream. The biggetst deal for me is the segregated, water resistant section for waders and boots, a large compartment for evything else, and a place to strap a rod case.
Paola Cat Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 3 wt ... That sounds good to me. I've only been able to get it down to (4) things I've got to load in the truck. Gear bag, Plastic tote with all the wading gear, Plastic tote with my vest and wading jacket/clothing layers, and my rod bag. PC Cheers. PC
Members stephen seward Posted March 21, 2008 Members Posted March 21, 2008 I've been using this bag from north face (base camp small duffle) and it is perfect. I wanted something that was waterproof, had shoulder straps, and packed a lot of gear. just big enough to carry my waders, boots, waist pack, variety of small items
