mizzouflyfisher Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I'm looking to tie up a bunch of RS2s. What kind of tail material is typically used. I don't want to spend several bucks on microfibets, so what else should I try. This whole tuition thing is killing my fishing money. Also, do you match the CDC to the color of the body, or can you just use white/cream on all of them. That junk is expensive also. Let me know what ideas are out there. Mizzouflyfisher
Members rmueller Posted February 10, 2006 Members Posted February 10, 2006 Antron yarn. Cheap and lots of colors. Separate a few strands from the yarn and tie in. MizzouFF, I am also here at mizzou. Do you spend anytime at Clearwater flyshop in Columbia?
Okieflyfisher53 Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 You can also use stiff hackle fibers for the tail. The original did not have cdc as the wing, it had fluff from the base of a hackle. Steve
Brian K. Shaffer Posted February 11, 2006 Posted February 11, 2006 Thread and fluff is all it really is if you don't want to get to complicated on the RS2. Use deer hair or moose for the tail... just watch your proportions... as it is that makes the fly. LESS IS BETTER than more.. write that down. The RS2 is a goldmine of a pattern.. check this out below : RS2 HOME SITE happy tying - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
mizzouflyfisher Posted February 13, 2006 Author Posted February 13, 2006 Thanks for the help guys. rmueller-I do spend some time at Clearwater-I'll probably be over there tomorrow. I don't get over there a lot though, because I order most of my materials off the internet. Brian-Thanks for the tippet-everything is great. I hope to meet up with you sometime down at Taney. Members Lucky Fly Posted February 14, 2006 Members Posted February 14, 2006 I tie some RS2's with a foam wing. 2mm craft foam from walmart ($.50) will do the trick. Cut a thin sliver of the foam tie it in and then trim to length. A hot pattern that has produced very well for me on local waters and also on the san juan. Don't limit yourself to the standard gray either, tie some in a chocolate brown. I use comparadun hair for the tails. Good tying and tight lines Steve "Trout Don't Live In Ugly Places"
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Mizzou if you want to tie some cheap, but close to the original, use the "fluff" off the hackle stem for the wing and you can get by with bucktail for the tails. I would use the thick base rather then the tips of the tail fibers. Remember that, IMO, the key is the emerging wing and the rest probably is not as important as the wing. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Wayne - " fluff " / you talking about aftershaft feathers ? ? Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 No brian, I'm thinking of the very soft fibers at the base of stem. Not sure what they are called. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members Oldschoolcane Posted February 17, 2006 Members Posted February 17, 2006 Brian~ Thanks for sharing that link to the RS2, does anyone have any ideas for our local waters on what colors seem to fish the best?? Thanks. Tim
