Danoinark Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 JoRob his son and myself braved the cold and icy fly rod guides to fish the last day of C and R. We fished mainly in Section 1 and the pools from the lodge down to the roadway entrance. I thought I was going to be skunked until I tied on one of those 2 hook type v rib san juan worm looking things that tippet turned us onto. They hit it well even in slow water under an indicator. Got my last fish on a crackleback before the horn blew this afternoon. We didn't have the numbers and the crowds were not there but getting out and seeing all the progress at the park was nice. JoRob caught a few on a pt. His son Ryan did manage to hook a brute but broke it off in one of the culverts. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Steve Smith Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 Dan; those culverts are a bear. I don't know how many fish I have lost for just that reason. I know people who purposely fish the culverts, but they use furled leaders and very, very heavy tippets. At least Ryan had a few moments to remember. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
Danoinark Posted February 13, 2006 Author Posted February 13, 2006 Steve I would say fishing the culverts would almost be a two man job. Get one of them long handled landing nets and try to grab em as they come through.... Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Steve Smith Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 A couple of weeks ago, I managed to catch a horse and land him just outside of one of those culverts. A lot of people have tried to catch the ole boys that hang out at the bridge, but I noticed as soon as one was hooked or spooked, they would rush inside the culvert. The one I hooked would always be in front of the end culvert waiting for food to wash through. Well, the hole didn’t have anyone fishing it for some time and I could see his nose rise occasionally in his favorite spot, so I walked a wide circle around him so not to spook. Lord knows I’m not the best fly caster, but I laid the perfect cast with the fly line behind him, and the tippet curved left to land a golden hackled crackerback right in front of his nose. He took the fly, and immediately turned into open water instead of inside the pipe. He even spun a couple of times on my 7X tippet and didn’t break it. It was one of those hookups where everything could have gone wrong, should have gone wrong, and didn’t happen. Ryan had to make a perfect presentation to get one of those big trout to take. Luck wasn’t with him, but the memory will be. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
Danoinark Posted February 13, 2006 Author Posted February 13, 2006 Steve...I can only dream for one of them. Ryan is going to do well as a fly fisherman. Ole JoRob is teaching him well. I think the sad thing is that most of those hogs will probably be gone shortly after March 1 don't you think. Or will some make it through the catch and take season? Steve Smith Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 If they were in the fly only zone, they'd have a chance. In Zone one, they probably won't last past the first hour of opening day. There will be so many treble hooks, somebody will snag them I know there has been a lot said about shuffling on Taneycomo. In Roaring River, the digusting act is snagging with a crankbait in Zone 1, and as far as I know, it is perfectly legal. What they do is stalk the banks looking for a good fish that is holding in a feeding pattern. When they find one, they throw a crankbait over the fishes back and just when the lure gets to the fish, they jerk to drive the hooks down into the fishes back. Real sport, huh? Maybe the water will be so silted that technique doesn't work. It would be even better if MDC neted those big breeders and put them back in the breeding pond. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO

I assumed that was what MDC did during the time between C and R and put and take. I figured some would be left, those maybe not healthy enough for breeding, but sure didn't realize they don't go back and get them. Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

I am not sure of the legality of snagging the fish with a crank. I wouldn't want to give it a try with an agent watching unless I had a copy of the regs in my pocket that stated it was an approved method of take. Where is the start of the fly zone? I have only fished by the hatchery and lodge. Thankfully it seems like shuffling is slowing a little at Taney. At one time I would see a half dozen people that were clearly shuffling between the dam and rebar on every trip. Now I only see one or two and sometimes none.

MoBass, Steve can give you a better description, but Its where the pavillions are located and I think a cleaning station is also located there and some restrooms. You can fish it down to a little past the bridge. Its also the only place you can wade. I have never found it crowded, even during the put and take season. I wish I could give you a better description. I know Steve will be able to....Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Thats a pretty good description Dan. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
