  1. I was looking at the generation charts, and saw that the cfs for the tailwater dropped significantly (down to 7000) on August 24. Was the water more fishable then, and is there a chance they do that again this weekend? Just curious. Rob
  2. Nice white. What was it, 15"? Rob
  3. Actually, I've wanted to fish it for a long time now, but I left all of my fishing (and tying) stuff at home so I could focus on studies. But I'm heading down to Bull Shoals this weekend with my parents, and theyre bringing my fly fishing stuff down for me. So I'm gonna try to get out to the creeks when I get my stuff and have time. Trying to talk my friends into a trip, but they are carless engi-nerds more interested in x-box online than fish on line. Rob
  4. I know, so much water, so little time. Thats why I don't have a car right now, but my friends do . I'll see what I can pull off, schedule is packed until next week. Rob
  5. Gonna be stuck here in Rolla for school until May, excluding holidays, and the Little Piney is just a short drive away. Just wondering what areas I should hit. The portion at the 63 bridge looks good, and I saw a fair amount of fish in the Lane Spring Branch. Rob
  6. The idea behind C&R is simple- less fish are taken out, so there are more fish left to catch, and the fish grow between each time they're caught. On the issue of whether or not C&R is effective or not, just look at Dry Run Creek. Lots of fish (and plenty of big ones) for the kids. On the "moral" aspect of it, it's just a choice we all make. I like catching fish (especially big ones) more than once, and think others would like to catch those fish also, so I release what I catch when outside of trout parks. When someone else catches a legal fish, the choice is theirs. Rob
  7. That's just how fast its moving- it draws reaction strikes from the fish. There used to be a lot of posts on the Ozark Chronicles.com forum, but not so much this year. You can probably just ask for some info if you're planning a trip. I asked a lot of questions, but never got around to making a trip. Still, everybody was a great help, and the main things I learned are: use a big rod; flies that look like shad; strip through the current, swing through the eddies. Other than that, experiment, and hang on. Rob
  8. Princes and copper john's are must haves on the current in the summer. Mohairs with a san juan dropper, ticking bottom in the runs and into the holes. Rob
  9. I know a few guys on another forum that fish for them below Rend Lake in the Big Muddy River. They use clousers and decievers (usually blue/white) and catch most everything that swims in the river, including bigheads, common carp, and buffalo. Heres a video of them in action- Rob
  10. Trout cam, or Lake cam? Rob
  11. I'm gonna be on the Lower Lake over Labor day, and while the main attraction will be skiing and boating, I will have some free time in the mornings. I'll have access to a dock that lies in a cove maybe 20' deep, but can walk to shoreline on a bigger part of the lake. Would it be worth my time to fish here, or should I just go to the tailwater for trout if I want to catch fish? Thanks, Rob
  12. When hooking them through the tail, do it off to one side of center. There is a major vein that runs along the top of the shell in the tail, and they die pretty quick if you puncture it. I've used them on trotlines for catfish, and the ones hooked like this lived until morning, unless the catfish found them. Rob
  13. Took my fly rod to the bait area of Montauk last week, and pulled the "evil fisherman" routine. Caught maybe 15 out of one hole, and watched maybe 3 others get caught. Pulled the "crowder-switch) a few times. Rob
  14. I ended up just going to the mdc.mo.gov website and searched for the map, and found it pretty easy. It looks like it's posted at a different URL from the one in the forum. Rob
  15. About a week ago, I was cruising the forums and found a map of Little Piney Creek/Mill Creek/Stone Mill Spring Branch-basically the wild trout streams in Ft. Leonard Wood. However, I can't seem to locate this map again, and was really hoping to print a copy for when I go to Rolla next. Any tips on where to find this map are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rob
  16. Any stream or lake with a predominately sandstone gravel bottom, with sandy patches here and there for spawning. Hope this helps. Rob
  17. Wait, so is there a possibility of a successful brown trout spawn in Ozark tailwaters in the fall should river temps fall below 53 degrees? Or is there another factor blocking the successful spawn in the Ozarks? Rob
  18. Trout Dawg- were those maybe tricos? They come in huge clouds in the mornings on the River and most of the smaller-mid size fish will be rising to them as they fall. They are tiny, tiny mayflies that will fly for a while and then drop a foot or two if you watch close enough. Most of them are gone by 10am or so. Rob
  19. Use some form of meat inside one of those store-bought wire minnow traps. Plastic won't work as well, as the crawfish can't get a good footing on it. Use it in places with larger gravel (current hasn't been a factor for me) and let it sit overnight. Dead fish, bacon, and even punctured cans of dog and catfood work great for them. Rob
  20. Hey trizkid- have you caught anymore of those "crappiegills" yet? Really curious to see a pic of em. Rob
  21. I've been tying up some parachutes lately, and have been wondering what is the best order for making them most effective (or easier to tie). I start by tying in the hackle, dubbing up to the eye, wrapping the hackle, and then tying off the hackle. However, I always seem to get some hackle fibres hanging over the eye, and it's tough to get 7x through the eye like that. Should I maybe wrap the hackle, tie off, and then dub forward? Advice greatly appreciated, Rob
  22. They always help. Rob
  23. Hmm. Didn't catch the "pole and line" part of the methods before. I guess I'm down to using longears if I don't want to worry about size. Oh well, there's more of them in the rivers anyway. Thanks, Rob
  24. Was that paddlefish snagged, or hooked in the mouth? I know of some guys who fly fish for some other filter feeders with big streamers, and they just tear them up. Rob
  25. Catman- I didn't know that road went down to Cedar and points beyond. A friend took me to that Model T place (Bo' Hollow ?) and the jerky and bbq were great. Neat place to visit if the fishing isn't too good. Rob
