  1. Thinking of going to RR this Friday but never been there.. Any chance to catch fish on dry flies and if so what on?
  2. We kinda splitt between Larry's and Readings. The convenience of Larrys is nice and I don't mind paying a little for that. Larry's son Kelley has taken real good care of of us on more than one occasion. I also feel that the knowledge of Charlie Reading is well worth the 3 eor 4 extra minutes drive. I didn't care for him the first time I went in there and didn't go back for a couple years but finally did. Once we got to know him a little better we really like going in there. He's helped me and my boys with tying and casting( I'm still not very good but my boys do pretty good). Actually I look at it as saving money at Charlie's as the advise saves me from buying things that don't work n or give the results we're looking for. We also stop in at Weaver's some when we really don't need higher end products and like the friendliness.
  3. Ditto on the middle!!!
  4. Probably right with high water. Guess I was thinking about what it was like whenI taught my kids rather than what the water is like now. Just watch out for peopl behind ya in long hole. Seen more that a few get snagged on a backcast.
  5. Long Hole is set up good IF there's not many people. Gotta constantly watch out behind ya if your casting for little kids and people walking behind ya. I've even had adults bring their lawn chairs and plop down behind me. I started both my boys out below the little falls up in zone 1. Usually not near as much "traffic" to watch out for. Main thing is your taking kids fishin! Have fun. We're headin down there the end of June for 10 days. Can't wait.
  6. Yes. If I understand right the long length helped get it down with the swift moving water.
  7. #10 lomg shank hook with maribou tied on top of hook in 4 seperate clumps. With the water as dirty as it was we tied black on the end with a rusty color in the front 3 clumps. Threw into the stained water and when you came into the clearer water they would hit it. Worked it slow. Almost always hit onthe fall.
  8. Just got back from there. We usually use 10 ft sinking leaders with 2 ft tippet for strippin cracklebacks. This weekend with the water so high and fast used a 12 ft 5.6( I think) with 12-18" tippet and mowhawk leeches and did good. All with floatin line.
  9. No kiddin it didn't look good. Caught fish pretty good though. Decided to stay in the park as most thought fishin would be bad. Got some good advice and learned a few new techniques and did O.K. Here's what we woke up to see.
  10. Leavin for Bennett tomorrow afternoon. Sounds like really crummy weather but it's still better than workin!!!! Thanks to everyone for the tips and we'll see if we can put them to good use!
  11. AAHHHHH!! The multiple meanings in the English language. Got a good laugh on this one. Headin down there Thursday. Think I'll tie up some extra black midges. Thanks for the tip. Anyone catchin 'em on any dry fly patterns??
  12. DustyPockets-How'd you do The rest of ur time there? Oneshot-based on ur knowledge and FC's prolly start at da bridge. Hopefully the water level will drop in the next week and a half. FishinCricket- I got some of those rapalas. Guess I'll throw them in. Think I even got a rainbow or maybe its clown from years ago. Thanks fer all da direction from u all. We'll only be there 4 days so ur info should help eliminate fishin those dry holes.
  13. No problem. We like strippin wollies and cracklebacks. We bring the spinnin outfits also so we'd sure be interested in the stickbait but not necessarily stiNkbait. Gonna try out of the park some maybe this trip. Somewhere between the park and Barclay. Would Barclay be the place to start or somewhere else?? No boat just wadin.
  14. What kinda size did they have to 'em??
  15. If it's talkin about fishin it's not hi-jackin to me. i agree it seems like it used to be better but will probly get better also. By the way my first bird dog was a Brittany. Started winnin field trials with her and someone stole her right out of my back yard!
  16. How was ur trip??
  17. FishinCricket, goin to try some out of the park fishin this year. What kind of flies do I need to tie up for the Niangua trip end of April?? Thanks everybody for the links. Use them quite often. Guess I just like talkin about fishin down there as well as hearin from people that have been fishin down there. Anybody fish there this past week or weekend?? Either in or out of the park? Here's a cool pic from last year. Thats my wife that got me started flyfishin.
  18. Yep, I know it'll be different. Just like hearin what it's like now and then picturing me, my wife, and 3 boys standin in the stream fly fishin. Everybody's old enough and good enough now ol' dad can get in some good fishin. It was a blast teachin them(didn't really know enough to be teachin but did the best I could). Seems like it's been a lot harder waitin for our first trip down there this year. My wifes family has had a place at Circle-J's for about 30 years. She got me into the fly fishin and I was hooked. Just like Bass fishin, Crappie fishin , bow huntin, rifle season, muzzleloader season, turkey huntin, shroom huntin, shed huntin...... Gonna try venturin out of the park down there this year. Be time to learn some more!!
  19. Headin to Bennett the 21st of April. I know it'll be different by then but was wonderin what the water is like. Guess I'm just a little anxious. Me and son been tyin flies all winter and gettin jumpy to go!
  20. Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed reading your blog. Sure makes it seem like our first trout trip of the year in april is a looooong time away.
  21. Guess nobody went!!
  22. getting ready to upgrade some of our fly tyin equipment from beginner stuff to better stuff as well as items that make it easier. We've been tyin mostly dry flies but gonna broade our horizon for Missouri fished flies and such. What are some of your favorite tools you would recommend or can't do without?
  23. nyone tried these? Thought bout getin sum fer Bennett. http://cgi.ebay.com/Set-five-Fluorocarbon-Fly-Fishing-Leaders-/290339437920?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4399943d60
  24. Newbie tell me about the mid-summer trip. We're a little flexible on the dates we can go. Brown and rainbow sounds good. Tell me about the hex hatch and when is it? Read a little about it but not much.
  25. drath and snagged-sorry guys. Was looking at google maps while u were posting. I know where ur talkin about now. We have a place right up the hill @ Circle J campground. Probably won't be many floaters on Easter weekend. oneshot-any spots up or downstream where you can get to the river publicy and which would be best up or downstream? Don't want to get onto someone's private property. BTW I see ur posts a lot on missouriwhitetails.
