  1. Apparently, you can do whatever you want up there. LOL
  2. There should be a rod and gun club on base. He can find it through the base outdoor rec office. They generally offer the classes necessary for licensing in Germany at least once per year. The classes for a fishing license in Germany take about a year to complete. Hunting licenses take about 2 years. Neither is cheap. Fishing and hunting in Germany is VERY complicated compared to here. You have to apply for permits for each outing. Sometimes you get them, and sometimes you don't. And you must have the licenses to apply for the permits. The local forester and stream master are GODS. If they don't like you, you won't fish or float their stream or hunt or camp in their forest. If you want to build a fire, you need a specific permit for that in addition to a camping permit, floating permit, fishing permit, etc. So he needs to plug in to the R&G club on base and get mentored through the process.
  3. Mosquito Midge sz 18-24, EHC size 14-16 (olive/nat wing) used as an attractor pattern, and egg patterns n peach, pink, red, and chartreuse.
  4. Yeah, but I need good excuses to go fish new places. And my name's Ken.
  5. Phil, I'd be happy to help. That sort of "gazetteer" development is right up my alley! I love exploring places, meeting people, taking pics, and researching stuff like that. If I didn't have to worry so much about writing and formatting it into the actual finished product for publication, that would be like a dream come true!
  6. Not to knock this site or its popularity, but Fly Fishing's Top 100 is hardly objective or scientific or all-inclusive. You have to sign your website up for it and put their banner on your main page. And what this company does is redirect outbound traffic to other sites where they get paid for advertising and inbound traffic. I used to be involved in a similar business that controlled over 50% of all outdoor sports and recreation web traffic worldwide. That kind of market share is worth a surprising amount of money. Notice, for example, that Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, Orvis, and FlyAnglersOnline.com are not listed. Notice that Fly Fisherman Magazine's website is not listed. THESE are the juggernaut sites for fly fishing. FAOL is the largest and most popular "content" site in the world for fly fishing. That means sites that are not selling merchandise. Bass Pro is the biggest retailer site for outdoor sports and recreation in the world. It IS a cool thing to climb into the top 10 on the "Top 100" lists. I'm not trying to toss a bucket of cold water on the parade. But I did want to add context and definition to what it actually means. Phil is definitely to be congratulated for being in their top 10 for fly fishing. And, frankly, this is one of my 2 favorite fly fishing sites...don't want to choose between them. And I thank Phil for providing it and congratulate him for managing such a popular site. For a regional fishing site, I think OA is by far the most USEFUL and well-planned site I've seen. It has great content. And content is king! If folks come here and find what they are looking for, it will continue to grow.
  7. If you are from the Lawrence, Kansas, area I would like to hear from you. I'm trying to do a "networking" favor for a friend.
  8. Call Wilma Morrow at 417-598-0881 or email wilmamorrow@peoplepc.com She's the #1 Coldwell Banker agent in the region and one of the top REALTORS down there. You won't find many who will touch a $75,000 buyer down that way anymore. But she has will work just as hard for a $75,000 sale as she does for a $750k sale. I can also recommend a builder in Kimberling City. But you will have to PM me for that info. I don't have permission to post his cell # or email address.
  9. Dano, didn't your folks teach you to walk without having to look at your feet?
  10. In my opinion, the NAHC mag is much better than the NAFC mag. But their biz practices/ethics are HORRIBLE. I used to write for North American Hunter. So maybe I'm a bit biased. LOL
  11. NAFC and NAHC and the primary PUBLISHING vehicles of North American Outdoor Group...a PUBLISHING and MARKETING company. They are in the biz of selling people magazines by convincing them they are in a "club."
  12. I've posted a few, but not many. Thanks.
  13. Why can't I upload photos anymore? I was trying to attach a 3x4" 47k photo (which is really tiny) to a post and it says it's too big and that I have 0kilobytes of global space left or some such thing.
  14. My wife is an award-winning, degreed artist/printmaker/designer from Germany. Most of her work focuses on wildlife and nature, but not all. Her style is technically pop art, but the themes are usually not modern or urban. Instead, they are usually mythological (esp. Native American) or nature. She uses bold, custom-mixed colors; unique and innovative texture; and bold designs that would lend themselves well to stained glass or mosaics. In fact, she also designs her own needlepoint work and works in the mosaic tile medium. She only does fine art as a hobby now, but that consists mostly of commission pieces for collectors. She was a full-time professional artist/designer for a long time and made a good living at it. She used to be the artist-in-residence for the Henrietta Wildlife Foundation, one of Dr. Jane Goodall's projects.
  15. Here's everything you need to know: http://www.williamjoseph.net/vest.htm
  16. Almost always without.
  17. I am in love with the WilliamJoseph Gear Bag, Chest. For hike-in fishing, the WJ CS II is even slicker! But I don't do much hike-in fishing. I've also tried all sorts of vests and packs. I am interested in trying out WJ's new vest just out of curiosity. But I am pretty sold on a GOOD chest pack. [Testing my ability to edit...please ignore.]
  18. I am a SA Mastery Series kind of guy, myself.
  19. Interesting. That would mean someone is intercepting their calls and phone messaging system and, for some reason or other, is returning their calls (way too late) just to make them look bad. Yeah, that wouldn't be high on my list of logical explanations.
  20. Precisely my point. There are about a dozen ways I can think of to solve this problem very inexpensively. Surely, if they caught one more reservation per week in the winter, most of these options would pay for themselves.
  21. I have no problem with the Friday thru Monday thing. Makes good sense to me. But you would think that would make Thursdays an important day to answer the lodging reservation and info phones and return calls promptly. I have more experience at that level and higher in the hospitality industry than they do. The late response caused us to cancel our trip for this weekend. That cost them money in their slow time of year. Duh! Besides, lodging is open 365 days/year. So your point is moot for the lodging reservations phone line. I am well aware that the concession is bid on periodically. I fail to see what that has to do with giving other anglers who might want to go down there a heads up to call WAY in advance.
  22. I have no problem with them closing the non-lodging stuff down when the fishing is closed...which is what they do. But when they are taking reservations 365 days/year for lodging and the fishing is F-M, I think I should be able to call at Noon on Thursday for lodging info/reservations and get a call back before midday Friday! And I never said a single word to her when she started making excuses about how they live 39 miles from the park and it's a real hassle for them to provide customer service this time of year. They make BIG BUCKS on these concessions. You'd think they could make sure they got their messages and returned their calls in a timely fashion. But the delay caused us to cancel our plans to go down this weekend. I am aware that the concessions are up for bid periodically. I fail to see what that has to do with me providing info on my personal experiences with the park to other anglers who also might want to go down there. It was a heads up...call WAY in advance...and the place is NOT open on Thursday as had been previously reported in this thread.
  23. Just quit catching fish and you won't have this problem. Most flies are going to get torn up some after 4 fish...especially dries.
  24. In case anyone wants to know, here's what I learned from the woman who owns the concessions at Montauk SP this week: 1. Park is only open Fri-Mon during C&R season for fishing, restaurant, stores, etc. 2. Lodging and camping are open 365 days/year. 3. Water in campground is on/off depending on weather during the winter months. 4. If you call for reservations/info during the week, you probably will have to leave a message and wait until Friday for a return call...which is too late to make plans. And then you get this story about how she lives 40 miles from the park and it's really inconveniencing her to operate this MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR STATE CONCESSION 4 days/week from her home 40 miles away. Poor baby! My heart bleeds for her. And I am so sorry to have inconvenienced her by trying to give her my money. P.S. This was the result of a thread on the Current River board, where the days/week the park was open in the winter was somewhat in dispute.
