Wilma Morrow, Sunset Realty, Inc. 417-598-0881. Or wilmamorrow@peoplepc.com They don't get any better. Most of her clients are repeat/referral and local business owners. She has a great new lakefront development property called Branson Canyon that's adjacent to Emerald Point that starts well under $200k...just for starters. Give her a call.

Thanks for the hot tip, Moose. -
There are a LOT of eBayers combing through all of the sporting goods and electronics outlets to find stuff they can resell for a profit. I read somewhere that the # of people making their sole living from selling on eBay is larger than the # of full-time employees of any corporation by a pretty good stretch. I think many of remember one of our Ozarks fly anglers who was cleaning out the old Orvis outlet by the pallet load and reselling the stuff on eBay to the extent that Orvis made him persona non grata! LOL

The WJ ultralight rain jacket is more like a Frogg Toggs jacket than it is an "everyday" sort of jacket. It is for packing in your fishing vest/pack for emergencies. I have a few of them. I also have a Stearns Mad Dog Gear camo breathable rain jacket that you can buy almost anywhere for under $50. That sounds more like what you are looking for. I bought it for teal season and turkey hunting. It's great. But it's too warm to wear in the heat of summer. Just right for Spring/Fall in the rain or anytime you need a light jacket. The Cabela's Dry Plus jackets are nice too. And they are a very good value for the dollar.

From $475 to $300 is about like a TFO dropping from $120 to $70. I sold a used TFO Pro Series 6wt 9' rod and a $25 TFO case for $100 plus shipping a year ago to a guy in Alaska who had never seen it. That's a $165 value brand new at full retail. So what's your point?
-
No worries. Those $600 fly rods come with no fault warranties! So you could just send it to the mfg with a note saying your wife crammed it up your hoo-ha, and they'd send you a new one.
-
Well, for me, the true cost of a fly rod over $200 would be the emergency room bill, legal fees, and half of everything I own...because my wife would beat me within an inch of my life! And I figure it just ain't worth it.

I just finished my article and am free to join ya down there if you holler. Takes me about an hour to make the drive. I'm free almost anytime: weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons, ...whatever. I'm gonna hit Capps a time or two this month regardless. We're putting on a mini-conclave with Dave and Emily Whitlock down there in early June. And I need to get more familiar with it. I've only been there once.

The creek is in much better shape now than it has been in years. But I haven't seen fishable trout populations there in a LONG time. I've read some other guys' reports of catching a few trout here and there, but I have walked that creek and fished the creek from the city park to the confluence with the James River several times in the past couple of years and I have seen ONE trout rise. And that was a huge BROWN down near the confluence in a deep hole. Very puzzling, but my eyes were not playing tricks on me. I was standing right above the hole probably no more than 20' from the fish when it surfaced gently and dropped back into the deep water. I got a very good look at it. It was about a 30" Brown! A fish like that can do some damage to Rainbow fingerlings in a delicate fishery like Crane Creek. Then you have the otters. I watched a young otter fishing last weekend. He nailed at least 6 fish in the 15 minutes I watched him. He's in the lower Wire Road CA area about 1/4 mile below the bridge...prime Rainbow water historically. I'm thinking it will be worth the effort to see if perhaps the trout have moved over into Spring Creek. So I'm doing some research along those lines to figure out the topography and access issues over there. If I can figure out how to get to enough of it, I may go scout it out a few times and see what happens. I know the trout do shift back and forth between the two streams depending on conditions. But my fear is that the trout pop is just dangerously low due to the past few years of drought.

When I fished below the dam Monday, I caught 14" fish. Hooked one good one who spit the hook right away. But there was a couple from Michigan I chatted with awhile when generation first began and we were waiting to see what they did with it who caught several very nice Rainbows from #3 downstream about 200 yards on 1 generator. None of these fish were over 20", but there were probably a half dozen that were pushing that. That is pretty typical for that stretch of water for the first hour or so after light generation begins. The wife outfished the husband, and they were nymphing.
-
I fished Crane Creek until dusk, and about 45 minutes before I headed for the car, I could not only see it, but I could smell it. Seemed close enough that I stopped fishing, moved to high ground, and looked around to make sure I wasn't in danger. The drive home was smoky all the way to downtown Springfield. Often times, smoke from large fires rises into the 2nd or 3rd strata in the lower atmosphere before cooling enough to stop rising. Then it begins moving more on the air currents that are not apparent at the surface. Eventually, it cools enough to fall back down. This is called "ducting." So...sometimes...folks close to a large fire will have less smoke and smell than folks further downwind of it.

Well, the creek is in good shape from town downstream. The upper CA was bone dry. I didn't even see a trout today. Well, I did see a few flashes in a couple of places I couldn't cast to that could have been small Rainbows. But they also could have been what I did catch several of today...Shiners. I even caught a Shiner that was about 6" long. I think that's the biggest I've ever caught. They tend to hit everything that floats by them. But the big one took a #16 PTN on private property just above the bridge near the confluence with the James River. Also caught a few Chubs today on #18-20 BH Zebra Midges (bug green w/black head). But you know what? I had a great afternoon anyway. And there wasn't another soul on the creek.

You mean like trying the egg ABOVE and a smaller scud as a dropper? How about just the egg pattern microjig on generation? LOL Fishing dropping water below the dam on Taney is a completely inverse paradigm of success on rising water. The fish have been feeding aggressively during generation, or they've been hugging the bottom for dear life and are trying to find some refuge. Strikes are going to mostly be instinctive/territorial aggressiveness. Use patterns that are too good to pass up and invade a big trout's space with them. A wounded baitfish imitation or a big scud are good choices on Taney on dropping water. To a lesser extent, a crawfish pattern will trigger strikes from serious predator fish (say over 20"). At night, it's a little different. And I don't fish much at night. But the basic rule is that the color and detail of the fly become less important than the size and action of it...for obvious reasons.

I'm with Al. The last thing I'm thinking about on a trout stream is success/failure...except for those occassional moments when I land a big fish I thought I was going to lose or some such thing. But I certainly don't go out thinking in terms of success/failure. I just go. I guess success on a trout stream to me is unwinding a bit and recharging my soul batteries.

The Time is NOW! Call & Write Your Legislator Both Senate & House List Below 300 family farmers and rural citizens came to the capitol to oppose Senate Bill 364 on Monday. We are keeping them from having the votes to pass this bill thanks to your commitment. As soon as they have the votes to win, they will bring this bill to the Senate floor. Please take two minutes of your time and call as many Senators as you can, as well as your own representative. Also, call Governor Blunt at (573) 751-3222. § SB 364 takes away authority of local elected representatives to protect the health, welfare and property rights of the majority of family farmers, landowners and rural citizens. § SB 364 abolishes the constitutional right of farmers and property owners to legally challenge corporate livestock factories when the negative impacts of these operations infringe upon their property rights. § SB 364 protects the rights of corporate agri-business at the expense of the vast majority of independent family farmers. This bill protects industrial livestock operations, which make up less than ½ of 1% of Missouri’s 105,000 farming operations, while taking away the property rights of the rest of us. Senate Bill 364 is a Blatant Attack on Family Farmers, Rural Communities, Local Control & Property Rights. Any attempt to weaken local control is a threat to democracy… and WE WON’T STAND FOR IT! Dave, The standards are basically USEPA mandates under the Clean Water Act. They are set to contain a certain amount (not ALL) polluted runoff based on an AVERAGE RAINFALL EVENT...not anything above average. IT IS A GIVEN THAT IN ABOVE AVG RAINFALL EVENTS THEY WILL FAIL. That is why I have said many times that, when it comes to ag entities and developments, the regs are WAY too lax. We had huge problems with this and excellent case studies in St. Charles County with the Dardenne Creek watershed. The issue there is more flooding than pollution, but that is because they only focus on the AMOUNT of water in places they don't want it instead of the PUTRID quality of the water in question. I lived on Dardenne Creek where it flows into the Mississippi River for 2 years...in a 6,000 sq ft lodge on 28' stilts. Those stilts and our levees weren't nearly as important with regard to the Mississippi River as they were in regard to Dardenne Creek...which drains the entire western half of St. Charles County. A rainfall event of over 1" in 24 hours (not that big or unusual in that neck o the woods) would create a creek rise in a matter of hours in excess of 10' and flow rates would jump from almost nil to about 10,000 cfs! Every single developer in St. Charles County is in compliance with federal and state guidelines for storm water drainage. So you can see that the cumulative effect of a slightly above average rainfall event creates catastrophic flooding. The amount of trash, lawn furniture, garbage cans, vehicles, bicycles, and dumpsters that would end up on our farm after these rainfall events was astounding! It required constant cleanup...several times/year costing us in the thousands of dollars each time. And it absolutely destroyed the fishery entirely. It also busted levees pretty routinely, eroded streambanks to the extent that they were seriously dangerous and unstable, and stunk to high heaven! That is PRECISELY who local and county officials need to be able to pass STRICTER regulations governing such things within their own watersheds. We LIVE here. We see, feel, and smell the problems every day. And we can make wise and balanced decisions on our own...thank you very much! FYI...we WERE a corporate farm of 800 acres owned by 12 "big business" (Fortune 500) executives and board members. And those guys were PISSED! Wayne, I'm posting a bulletin I just received from a group of family farmers and rural residents and landowners from around MO who are lobbying HARD to defeat SB 364 for their own reasons. They are backed by American Family Insurance Co. I'll put it on the Mo Senate Action Alert thread. It is instructional to the discussion we've been having. Check it out.

If you look up the bill on the Senate website, that's what it says.
-
SB 364 is set for a vote on 3/22/07, gang. If you still haven't had confirmed contact with your state senator, CALL THEM.
-
The reason you are confused is because I am not trying engage in point-counterpoint dialectical debate with you. I am merely deepening a discussion we pretty much agree on in an effort to further refine positions and strategies for improvements. There is always a "but..." My point is that there are those out there with a different set of priorities and perspectives than you and I share. And we need to figure out the best ways to address THEM in a productive way.

Hey Whats A Little Slap on the Wrist..Homeport Agreement
SilverMallard replied to Danoinark's topic in Norfork Tailwater
Hey, thanks for cleaning this up. Actually, that makes a LOT of sense. And it sounds like TU and ADEQ are actually taking this matter VERY seriously. You have no idea how happy that makes me. -
Yeah, that must be it! KC is pretty far North. They're yankees. And they think they have great BBQ. Man, I've suddenly got a hankering for some slow mesquite smoked brisqette, jalapeno cornbread, and ranchero beans.

I've seen segments on SoH and Taney before, but missed that one. -
Brown Trout caught off Lilley's Dock this morning
SilverMallard replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
A LOT of people catch big fish on Taney. Leonard just gets his fair share.
