Fishing has been pretty good since late October. Main lake bluffs have been producing numbers of Kentuckies which is good. The last 2 years I was starting to think that something had happened to the Spots since we all caught so few during those Winters. Also there is getting to be alot of good Smallies on the bluffs. Saturday had 4 smallies between 16-18 inches. Using gitzits, hula grubs and of course big jigs.
Largies seem to be more on flatter gravel points with large boulders. If the wind blows they are hitting cranks and spinnerbaits. If it is slick and calm football jigs seem to be the best bet. Not alot of kicker fish but good solid keepers. I am fishing mostly the Buck Creek area but have fished the Theodosia arm some too. Here is a pretty gooun I caught 2 weeks ago in the Theodosia arm. Naturally I cant catch one like that in a tournament. I didnt weigh it. Had a large head but a skinny body.
As of last weekend the water temps were around 56F according to my gauge.
Check this out, my fishing buddy even spooned up a big drum yesterday. This pic was taken on his side of the livewell. We both got to bring home fish for supper.
The fishing has been really good in December. Yesterday We had 10 keepers fishing the mid lake area around Buck and Big Creeks. Fish are 10 to 45 ft deep. We are catching several on main lake bluffs on gitzits, spoons and jigs. If the wind is blowing hard you can fish crankbaits parallel down the bluffs.
The creeks and pockets have better fish on the flatter gravel points around 40 ft deep. Big jigs and spoons are catching these fish. Its good to finally see some Kentuckies. This is the only time of year I like to bring fish home to eat. Something about fresh fish coming out of cold water really makes them delicious. I brought these home for supper last night.
I had 3 or 4 bites yesterday on the blade but nothing there when I pulled. Tomorrow or Friday I guess I'll join the kazillion people up there in the James River. The lower end is like whipping a dead horse or at least for me it is.
How the heck do you catch 5 fish on the rock? I am struggling very bad and have a 2 day tournament this weekend. Fished today under cloudy/windy conditions and still only 3 keepers. Jeez this isnt looking good at all.
Is there any topwater bite in the morning?
Have you fished up the river any?
I know, alot of questions. Wanting to go fishing I guess. Not sure if I can stand the heat though.
Let me guess, your fishing from Mallard to around Diamond, right?
I'm really thrilled and done fishing for the year! I think I just might move down to Lake Amistad, TX. No high water and great fishing.
To top it all off it doesnt rain 5 out of 7 days like it does here. Anyone else getting as sick of rain and storms as me? You would if you would just have lighting strike your house ...sigh...
If it were me I have about 3 flippin sticks ready to go. There will be plenty of colored water to fish and I bet that is where the fish will be especially if it is sunny. If it is cloudy/rainy/windy the blade should work. I would try the back ends of the creeks. Just glad I dont have to fish this weekend LOL
Well folks its gonna happen again. It looks like we are going to have water up in the deer woods again
Anyone actually like it when the water gets that high?
Hello Don,
I have seen this scenerio myself alot of times when the fish this time of year wont start biting til up in the day. I cant help but think the surface temp warms up and the bait fish pull up thus making the bass more active.
Sunday we won the Joe Bass tournament out of Theodosia with 16.07 lbs and had big bass with a 4.92. We are catching most of our fish on hula grubs and carolina rigs. Secondary points with ditches or "guts" seem to produce the best fish with alot of pea gravel. We are keeping the boat in around 20-25 ft of water. The better fish are coming from deeper water now. The fish up shallow are the smaller bucks. In the real clear water a 4 ft leader on the carolina rig works best. I am using a 3/4 to 1 oz egg sinker. Natural colors seem to work best with the lizards and french fry worms.
Tight lines
B
It never ceases to amaze me what one will find when fishing.
Im on vacation this week and have been fishing all week. Monday when the wind was blowing hard had 11 keeper bass fishing spinnerbaits in the back of the pockets. Today was a blubird no wind day and the bite was slower at least for me however had 5 good keepers today.
To top it all off I found this smallmouth floating near Buck Creek that bit off more than it could chew. Check out the large shad in its mouth! This was about a 3 lb smallie! Perhaps a 12" swim bait is what we need to throw haha
