Phil I did get an answer back from Mike Davis who fishes the Little Red almost daily and is President of the Friends of the Little Red told me the slot does apply to the entire river. He also said bait fishing will no longer be allowed in the C and R areas. He also thinks all artificials in those two areas mentioned..JFK and Mossy Shoals C and R...will have to be barbless. This is not official, so I will still try to get a more clear answer from AGFC.
-
Phil, good question. I took it to mean the slot would apply to all of the Little Red. As to the bait and or lure restrictions are you talking about at JFK and Mossy? This was the only information that was in the AGFC newsletter I get. I can ask those questions though. Dan

Here is a complete list of all of the Arkansas Fishing Regulation changes proposed for next year. The AGFC will make their decisions on August 17...Dano Fishing rule changes to be decided at Aug. 17 meeting LITTLE ROCK - The Arkansas Game and Fish Commissioner's fisheries staff has proposed 27 changes in Arkansas fishing rules. Commissioners will take action on the recommendations at their Aug. 17 meeting in Little Rock. Changes approved will take effect Jan. 1, 2007. Most of the proposals are for sport fishing in specific waters, but some are for commercial fishing and turtling (the taking, raising and selling of turtles). The proposals in brief summary: 1. Only one bass over 21 inches long can be kept each day on Mallard Lake. 2. Implement a family fishing program on Craighead Forest Park Youth Fishing Lake at Jonesboro. 3. Clarify the Mississippi River boundary in Desha and Arkansas counties. 4. Implement smallmouth minimum length limit of 12 inches with a daily limit of two on the Ouachita River downstream from Remmel Dam. Prohibit hogging and noodling on the Ouachita River upstream from the mouth of the Little Missouri River. Implement a 20-inch minimum length limit on flathead catfish for recreational and commercial anglers on the Ouachita River, from the confluence of the Little Missouri River to the confluence of the Caddo River. Impose a 10 fish creel limit on catfish for commercial fishermen on the Ouachita River, from the confluence of the Little Missouri River to the confluence of the Caddo River. 5. On the Lower Little Missouri River, implement one fish creel limit and 18-inch length restriction for smallmouth bass. On the Narrows Tailwater, implement a trout delayed harvest area. On the Narrows Tailwater, implement a brown trout catch-and-release area from Narrows Dam to Highway 27 Bridge. On the Ouachita River, upstream of the confluence of the Little Missouri River, close commercial fishing during January through March. 6. Begin a 13-inch minimum length limit on spotted bass, sometimes called Kentucky bass by anglers, on Lake Ouachita. 7. Remove the 16- to 21-inch protected slot limit and 4 bass a day limit on largemouth bass on Lake Cargile in Conway County. 8. On the Little Red River, implement a 16-24 inch slot limit on all trout, of which one may exceed 24 inches, change JFK and Mossy Shoals catch-and-release area to artificial lures only areas. 9. Remove the 13- to 16-inch protected slot limit on largemouth bass on Lake Maumelle. This regulation will become effective immediately after it is approved by the Commission. 10. Begin a 10-fish daily limit on largemouth bass, of which only one can be over 18 inches long, on SWEPCO Lake near Gentry in Benton County. 11. Begin a 16-inch maximum length limit for black bass on Lake Winona in Saline County. Longer bass must be immediately returned to the water. 12. Prohibit the use of common carp as bait in 31 Arkansas lakes: Bob Kidd Lake, Devil’s Den State Park Lake, Lake Elmdale, Lake Fayetteville, Wilson Lake (Washington County); Crystal Lake (Benton County); Lake Leatherwood (Carroll County); Lake Hindsville (Madison County); Lake Cargill, Lake Overcup (Conway County); Lake Barnett and Tom’s Lake (White County); Lake Conway (Faulkner County); Harris Brake Lake (Perry County); Lake Atkins (Pope County); Sugarloaf Lake (Sebastion County); Truman Baker Lake, Lake Hinkle (Scott County); Lake Wilhelmina, Irons Fork Lake (Polk County); Gurdon Lake (Clark County); Cox Creek Lake (Grant County); Gillham Lake, Dierks Lake (Howard County); DeQueen Lake (Sevier County); Dr. Lester Sitzes III Bois d’Arc Lake, Rick Evans/Grandview Prairie WMA Lakes 1 and 2, Mike and Janet Huckabee Lake (Hempstead County); Lake Columbia (Columbia County); Upper and Lower White Oak Lakes (Ouachita County); Tri-County Lake (Calhoun County); Lake Monticello (Drew County) and Cane Creek Lake (Lincoln County). 13. Clarification of rules for trotlines, setlines and limblines. 14. Clarification of scientific collection permit rules. 15. Delete “scaled” from definition of rough fish. 16. Add “sportfish” to AGFC code book language. 17. Add bullheads to lists of rough fish. 18. Grand Lake, prohibit hoop nets for commercial fishing and turtling. 19. Harris Brake Lake, close seasonal commercial fishing. 20. Lake Atkins, close seasonal commercial fishing. 21. Lake Chicot, close seasonal commercial fishing. 22. Delete bullheads from list of bait fish. 23. Waters under family and community fishing regulations will be required to use electric trolling motors. 24. AGFC will decide the new fishing regs for Arkansas on August 17. Here is the only proposed change on the Lil Red for next year. 8. On the Little Red River, implement a 16-24 inch slot limit on all trout, of which one may exceed 24 inches, change JFK and Mossy Shoals catch-and-release area to artificial lures only areas. On the Little Missouri there are some proposed changes also. Mine's sent...

Jeremy That's great news, I was hoping that you would be starting back soon. See you there. Dano

Howdy Dave. You know I bet as we speak TU has its big DC lawyers ready to swoop right down on that Norfork issue. Wonder what happened to the rumor they were going to jump in and fight it?
-
Luke, I did mean to add that you can pull the hackle and size it for what effect you want. I think that was the reason for them coming up with the distribution wrap...sizing especially for small flys. Dano
-
I have a copy of Art's Streamside Guide. Its a dandy for identifying Mayflies, etc. What State does Bill live now....Dano

A series of stories begins on the issue http://www.baxterbulletinonline.com/apps/p...608080327/1002/

Phil Don't they have to schedule public hearings in these matters. Wonder if Missouri TU has any influence. Dan

Good Fly Fishing Areas - Below Trophy Area
Danoinark replied to troutchaser's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
I think there are spots on the lake front in downtown Branson that are wadeable during low water. Somebody else that is more familiar will chime in to let us know...Dano -
Greg this fly's hackle was tied in by the tip with no more than 2 turns of hackle then tied off. I like my soft hackle tied somewhat swept back as opposed to spider like. I take the first wrap up close to the hackle as to tie them back, then form the head. I sometimes use this method called a distribution wrap and works great for small flys...Dano http://www.troutflies.com/tutorials/nest/13.shtml ps Luke, this was Conranch JV Hen. Its a feather from the cape in a light brown.

Scary. I just can't think of any reason gravel mining would NOT harm the stream. Same senario's on the Crooked Creek. We all know how destructive those mining operations were to that blue ribbon fishery. And now they are wanting to do it again on Crooked. If there was a legitimate reason for the dredging to open the waterway for larger vessels, etc...but to simply find a cheaper source of building material while endangering this jewel makes no sense to me. Just my opinion. Phil thanks for pointing it out. Dano

How about a Classic Wet Fly?
Danoinark replied to Brian Wise's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Mr. Wise, me too! I just can't get them to work properly. I have even tried coating them with some head cement to keep the fibers together, etc. Maybe we need a weekend tying session one of these days focusing on those wings. Go over and get some pro help from Davy But what do you want to bet the fish don't care bout whether those wings have a little curve in em... Dano -

Gone I guess its just my name for the smallest of the round indicators that you put toothpicks in. I actually don't know if they have a "micro" size. I just try to the find the smallest if possible... Dano
-
Another reason not to use those threw the toothpicks away and now I use the little balls like I said to loop the tippet through then pull the rubber band into it.
-
I am starting to use the micro balls. Loop the tippet through the hole, put a small piece of rubber band in the loop and pull the band into the ball. Real tight and easy to reposition and less expensive...Dano

I mean't to add that I like how he did the feather inlay's. What blank did he use? Dano

ECCE, very nice indeed. I am a big fan of the "shooter" rods. The history of those if you didn't know can be traced to Bob Brunsell. He is the developer of the Brunsell Little Shooters series of Rods that are commercially sold by www.dorber.com . They are in Flippin, Ark. This series of 4 to 7 ft rods are manufactured with double the guides. So a 7 ft rod would have 15 guides including the tip etc. He used oversized stripping guides. The theory is that the more guides the less chance of the line having slack along the rod causing friction, thereby it's easier to "shoot" line. Dorber will make you a "shooter" in any length and wt. rod. I am a proponent of Dorber for many reasons. They make their own blanks, they use very nice components, reasonably priced, but more importantly nice folks to do business with. I have built rods on their blanks and purchased their factory rods and have been satisfied. I only mention this because I like doing business with local companies especially if I can espouse their honesty. If you check that website you will find the story of the Lil Streamer rods. Bob Brunsell passed away a few years ago. He was a Wisconsinite that moved to the Ozarks to be near the White River. I am very lucky to have a copy of a book he authored called the Brunsell Chronicles. It is a series of essay's that he wrote on flyfishing where he imparts his knowlege of the sport and more about the "shooter" rods. It would be well worth it if you can find a copy of this now out of print book... Now some will disagree and say that adding more guides will add to much weight to the blank causing the rod not to cast as well. Its my opinion that you may trade a slight increase in rod weight for less friction of line against blank a tradeoff if you can cast more line with less effort. Here is the link to the Brunsell story from Dorber http://www.dorber.com/flyrods.html Dano

John First of all I am sorry to hear about your loss and I pray that your family will be comforted through all of this. Next I would simply send him one more email or pm post through the board and let him know what is up. If by the time you get back and settled and you haven't heard from him I say go ahead and send them out. If he does respond then give him a few more days because I don't have a problem with waiting. But most of all don't worry about this thing, you have too much going on right now to worry about this small issue. Just my humble opinion. Dano

Nice fish Ecce. And nice rod. Did you custom build that cork with a wood inlay? You know I am so darn close to Beaver but have never fished it. I should just come over and try my luck. Dano
