RPS - Great story, vivid detail and I can even picture it in my mind. Not to sound insensitive to your plight, but 2 important questions, how big was that last fish? And did the Zara spook make it? Not a fishing story, but a painful one none the less. My dad was changing the brakes on his pickemup and while spinning the whatchemcallit he got his finger pinched, loud scream followed by words not to be repeated, backed off the whatchemcallit. Try #2, going good, everything sliding into place, *&^%$#@!! pinched same finger again. Sometimes this is called a "hurts donut".

This kind of bothers me, LOZ did not make that idiot drink beer, and LOZ sure didn't make him turn into the water patrol boat. My guess is that if you remove alcohol from the equation, accidents go down on LOZ.

When the cops caught up them, they had a glazed look about em.

How are you dealing with gas prices?
The Caddis replied to gonefishin's topic in General Angling Discussion
Cheif, How many miles did they go, 7 instead of 5 is much greater concern than 202 vs. 204. -
How are you dealing with gas prices?
The Caddis replied to gonefishin's topic in General Angling Discussion
My wife and I both drive Honda's, so we have fuel efficient cars. I don't make that trip across town for just one item anymore. I look at it this way. I used to be able to go somewhere for a nickel a mile, now it is a cool 15 cents. Add that to the cost of the goods you are going to purchase etc and you may change your mind. Growing up our cable bill was say $40, now it is $85, along with internet access, cell phones, ipods, we monthly fee ourselves to the poorhouse. What's a couple of extra bucks for gas compared to these increases/additions? -
I'm not familiar with that one. Where did you hear about it? Maybe a pattern on a local site? I did however pick up a starling skin recently and lvoe the way it ties. I tie it on a Tiemco 206BL witha goose Biot body (color of choice) and then tie in the hackle.

I stuff clippings in an empty vest pocket that I empty at home.

Soft Hackles & Winged Wet Flies
The Caddis replied to jjtroutbum's topic in Fly Swaps & other Activities
Any updates on this? I thought I saw on the Caddis post that these were being sent along with the flies for that swap? -
No child left behind? This is the teacher's and administrator's fault. If kids go to the same school, have the same teacher, what is different? The parents. My wife works with a woman whose kid has been in our son's classes many times over the years and consistently our son is at the top of the class while our neighbor is at the bottom. The difference, while we are at home with our kids involved in what they do, after work our neighbor hits happy hour while her kid is at home alone to feed himself, etc. The neighbor blames the school, says they are labeling her son and that they should do something about it. The school provides the same classroom time that my kid gets, the same opportunities, the only difference is home life.

Praying for Trout?
The Caddis replied to Rabbi Eric Eisenkramer's topic in General Angling Discussion
Nice, I should be able to say something better, but the Rabbi has already said all that needs to be said. Thank's for sharing and I hope one day to share some water with the Fly Fishing Rabbi. -
Below the Tenkiller dam, there is a stretch of about ? miles of trout water. Here is in excerpt from the ODWC's website. Lower Illinois River Trout Season: Year round. Designated Trout Area/Size/Location: 7.75 miles of Illinois River from Tenkiller Dam to Hwy. 64 bridge near Gore in Sequoyah County. Bank Access / Boat Ramps: A new public access location has been added to the Lower Illinois River trout stream. The Lower Illinois River Public Fishing and Hunting Area – Simp and Helen Watts Management Unit offers public fishing access to almost one mile of the trout stream and 320 acres of public hunting opportunity (see map). To reach the area, travel north on SH 100 from Gore approximately four miles. Turn east onto a gravel county road and travel approximately one mile to the entrance east of the house. Park in the designated parking area only. The area is managed for walk-in access only. Four other public access sites are available along the state designated trout stream, including a pool off the river located immediately below the dam which allows trout fishing even during high power generation. Another good site is located at the River Road Public Access Area about six miles downstream from the dam. The Gore Landing Public Access Area, operated by the Town of Gore (918) 489-2636, offers camping and a boat launching ramp. Special Regulations: Brown trout – daily limit: one (1); size limit: 20-inch minimum. Rainbow trout – daily limit: six (6); size limit: none. Lower Illinois River Public Fishing and Hunting Area – Simp and Helen Watts Management Unit – all general trout fishing regulations apply (see page 24). All hunting is restricted to shotguns with pellets or archery equipment only. See Hunting Guide for open hunting seasons. No overnight camping is allowed on the area. Zach, I did ok with a size 18 EHC, but I swtiched to a new flymph I tied for the soft hackle swap. I only had 1 with me (stupid of me I know), but it got smashed hard and after 2 fish was done for. the other soft hackle patterns I had wern't as good but productive none the less.

Green Butts & Soft Hackles in General
The Caddis replied to Danoinark's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
Danoiark - thanks for the link...When I started tying I was told that if your patter includes pheasant tail it will catch fish no matter how it is used. Randall - I agree with Danoiark, that will catch fish. That looks very similar to a pattern I use that is deadly on bluegill. -
Green Butts & Soft Hackles in General
The Caddis replied to Danoinark's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
It doesn't get much better than fishing with soft hackles. Can someone post a pic of this famous Green Butt? How about the recipe? is it just thread and partridge? -
Call mine a biot caddis.

I was there last Friday and caught a couple of females that looked ready to bust. I'm sure they'll lay eggs, but who knows if it will be successful.

Yes, He is risen! -
I'm in, fly to be determined.
-
Yes, I'd be interested in a caddis themed swap A different option might be to provide two flies for every participant. That way you could keep one as an example, and fish the other.
-
Randy, I agree with what you said. Now that I have said that, time is a valuable commodity, I have 3 kids and some nights I don't have time to tie. I do find time about 3-4 times a week to tie, and do tie about 6-10 a session. You are right, the more you tie the better you get, my flies now compared to a month ago, 3 months ago and even further are better proportioned, and more fishable. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for everyones advice. With the limited number of places to shop for flyrods where I live (the only true fly shop in town closed this winter). I have tested all available and made a purchase. I have next Friday off and plan on fishing with my new rod. I'll post a report afterwards.

Soft Hackles & Winged Wet Flies
The Caddis replied to jjtroutbum's topic in Fly Swaps & other Activities
Glad to see they arrived. I sent flies for another swap and it took about 3 weeks to get there. I hope they are up to par and everybody likes. -
I'm thinking about high $ rod. Are they worth it? I'm considering an Orvis Zero gravity, a Winston Boron IIx, and a Sage Zaxis. One conern I have is that these are fast action rods and what about fishing light tippets on Taney? Will they be forgiving enough? Any thoughts, comments, or wise cracks are appreciated.

You can get the smoke box at either Home Depot or Lowes. I use this in both my gax grill and smoker. I have both, its the only way to go, I mean, you never know when you may need to smoke ribs, brisket, sausage, chicken, turkey, and more ribs all at the same time.

Thanks guys, I'll post a report after I'm done.
