When Fishing/hiking, Do You Carry A Handgun?
Jack Jones replied to rfd515's topic in General Angling Discussion
There are restrictions on the first amendment Fins. They are allowed to place reasonable restrictions as to time and place, etc. They restrict the others too. Hence, the vanishing 4th amendment. -
With a wife that's out of work for right now and in school, one income and kids, etc... Yeah, I have to budget it for right now. It doesnt mean that it will take months probably at the end of the week, but there's things more important than a fly rod Jerry. Unless you'd like to contribute....... Where's the best place to buy Aquaseal? And thanks for the tip Phil. I would have put it all on the outside for sure. I'll probably just seal all around the boot and up the leg to the inseam. Although I think the inseam is where it leaked from. Unless I suddenly became incontinent.

So I went to Taneycomo this afternoon for the first time since the winter. I sweat my butt off until I got on the water. Then I found out my waders are leaking on the left leg. Have to seal all the seams and hope that works. Any recommendations on a product for that? Then, after catching about 6 on olive woolly buggers, I failed to pay attention to what I was doing and jammed my rod tip, breaking it between the 2nd and 3rd piece. It's a TFO 8' 4wt 4 pc rod. So now, I've got to budget in the $25 to send it back and try out their lifetime warranty. Oh well, it sure beat doing any kind of labor on this Labor Day.

Man, Flinger, quick with the Bible verses. Must have forgotten the ones that discuss turning the other cheek, LOL. Thanks Justin! Say, how about those Huskies? 34-0 with 5 min left in the 4th!!!! WOOF WOOF! -

Hey Ray....that would be the Northeast U.S. Specifically the New England states.....where they measure the snow in feet, LOL. And Ness, I'm gonna troll that last one and just say that if everyone would just accept that the UCONN Huskies evoke greatness and Jim Calhoun is a hell of a coach, the world would be a better place overall, LOL -

Well ray, I don't know. I'm certainly not a calmer driver and I drive a small car, LOL. But I have seen many people in bigger trucks act like total morons and drive very agressively on the theory that "theirs is bigger so get out of the way." Seen it in small cars too because they can whip in and out of smaller spaces (myself included). It all depends on the personality type, but my experience is that guns, big trucks, etc... tend to attract certain personality types that I generally don't like to associate with. Certainly not everyone. But when I'm sizing up a sitation, I'm going to look at all factors and draw from my experiences. So bottom line, these are guidelines and not applicable to everyone. And for what its worth, this was true back in the Northeast too where every dumbass who got a souped up 4-wheel drive vehicle or SUV thought they could drive in a freakin blizzard until they realized it only made them go faster, not stop faster. Me? I had a Ford Escort at the time and drove it in all kinds of winter weather without an issue. So, back to the original post......carry what you like, no need to flaunt it, and if you live and let live there probably won't be any trouble. -

You know...I wouldn't exactly be quoting World Nutcase Daily as a source, LOL. But that's just me. The agitated and vehement responses from some folks here tend to prove what I was saying earlier in the thread about the nature of some of these CCW folks. It seems that the non-carriers around here seem to be more calm. And when I'm out on the water or in the woods that's what I'm looking for....calm. -
The topic title sounds like a Jimmy Buffet song. I know I wouldn't take that risk. I'd hate to get out there and have it flowing to quick to control.

LOL....I prefer the term "privateer" Ness. Now keep a weather eye on the horizon....."It's better to swim in the sea below Than to swing in the air and feed the crow" -
When Fishing/hiking, Do You Carry A Handgun?
Jack Jones replied to rfd515's topic in General Angling Discussion
In the NYC case, it was pretty evident who his target was. He had attempted to get into the building, was denied access and actually waited for his boss to arrive. Now, I don't think "robbers" are good guys. In fact I hate thieves with a passion, whether street criminals, politicians, or uniformed thieves. However, when it comes to homicide, I discovered in my studies back when I was going to school that random, indiscriminate homicide was a rarity. Most killers have an intended target and motive when they take a life. I agree this topic got way off track from it's intent. I would support locking it at this point, even though I do enjoy reading all the responses. -

Gotta say....last mass shooting in NYC guess who shot all the innocent bystanders....COPS! Not the shooter!. He pretty much just wanted to kill his former boss, an hey, haven't we all felt that way at one time or another, LOL. Point is.....trigger happy policemen with an us v. them mentality, and gun enthusiasts who want to be trigger happy policeman kill people....most criminals are statistically more targeted in who they kill. I'll take my chances. -
Greasy, that's about accurate in how it works. When I was hospitalized two years ago with a bacterial complication of pneumonia and almost died, the total bill was close to $100,000 for two weeks care. Thankfully I have insurance and only had to pay out about $4500 when all was said and done. Seeing as how my student loans at graduation were close to 60k and I'm paying those off over 30 years, that one hospital bill would have taken me well about 50 to fully pay. So yeah, to me it just makes sense to have each person pay a smaller amount every month and have coverage than to require them to have this take it or leave it free market approach which leaves people without, impoverished (which would have been my situation), or hurting. This health care debate shouldn't be about insurance companies, profits, or political principles. It's about people darnnit. And either we care (for those who say we're a Christian nation then we care like our Lord would), or we don't. But it's high time we stop gambling with people's lives in a day and age where we certainly have the money and resources to help more people than ever. Now I'm done with my rant. I gotta stay off those energy drinks!!!

Good Place To Fish/paddle Close To Home
Jack Jones replied to Slewfoot dan's topic in Big/Little Piney River
Thanks for the report Greasy. I, too, had been considering the Big Piney from one of the accesses rather than an outfitter to save money. I don't need my vehicle damaged though. So I suppose if I go, I'll find an outfitter and park it there. -

I'm with ColdWater on this one. I don't carry. I've never fired a rifle, shotgun, or pistol. I've just never felt the need to. Easiest way to avoid most danger is to stay out of dangerous places, and in all cases be alert to your surroundings. I've traveled in some of the worst cities in America, in some of the worst neighborhoods, and I just never felt the need to carry. Truth be told, in many cases, I tend to trust the "criminals" who are carrying more than I trust the "2nd amendment" guys that are carrying. Not all, so don't go thinking I'm casting aspersions on anyone here. It's just been my experience that the folks I've known who purchased guns for other than hunting, and felt the need to carry them regularly, tended to be real law/order cop wannabe types that seemed more likely to feel empowered by their weapon and choose aggression before defusion in suspect circumstances. So no.....I don't carry a firearm. Now bladed objects.....that's a whole different story. -
Southwood Boat Ramp Closed
Jack Jones replied to jbooth's topic in Fellows Lake, Springfield Lake, McDaniels Lake
When you say closed, do you mean roped off or something? I mean, low boat ramp I could still launch my yak or canoe there so long as I have a place to park . -
I put in around 6:45 from Ozark park and paddled upstream. I was fishing a zoom l'il critter craw in pumpkinseed and a zoom 4 in finesse worm in green pumkpin. I fished both sides up the river a ways until it got real thin. Only came up with 2 (one on each bait) and neither of them were over 10 inches. The bite was real soft too, barely noticed it. They had no fight in them until they got up to the boat. Still, beautiful night and great temperatures.

Yeah, JD, it couldn't be the seven and eight figure salaries collected by the CEOs, and other execs of the insurance companies, hospitals, etc.....
-
That's what I figured. I checked out the mill side last time I was there, but there's not a way down. Looks like you have to head below the dam on the park side. My other thought was to carry my canoe and put in under the Jackson St. Bridge and paddle up to the dam for a bit, then paddle back down the Finley for a while.

Hey al, does a car wax work okay on Royalex too?
-
Must be me but I've never had luck at the park. I've walked up and down from the boat launch to the soccer fields. I've tossed worms, beetle spins, cranks.....I've always come up empty with the exception of the occasional rock bass. RS...should I try bigger spinner baits there?? Maybe a 3/8 white/chartruese?

Other than those who are camping out on a gravel bar during a float trip, is there anyone here who takes their own paddlecraft on a car camp to state parks or other campgrounds? If you do, how do you secure it against theft during the night, or if you want to go on a trail hike? I'd love some suggestions. Maybe it's just my city going mentality, but I figure it would get stolen in the middle of the night if I just left it outside the tent, etc...
