I've gigged for 30 years. It is a tradition for a lot of us. I will gig every chance I get. I haven't stuck anything but suckers in the last 15 years If you've never gigged you just wouldn't understand any of these conversations I guess
I'm happy to say the guy who stuck the one accidentally, actually was so upset with himself that he sat down the whole rest of the evening in total disgust about it. It was a 12" fish it's almost impossible to mistake a 20" smallie for any other fish. 12" fish in fast water running with the red horse, I can see the dilemma. Btw, we saw walleye, catfish and even a couple big hellbenders
My ultimate goal would be to make it illegal to gig That isn't gonna happen so it would be great if the fine was so high that people would take it more seriously. The prosecuting attorney in said county doesn't usually have a passion for the river like some of us do. I know these are 1st world problems. Right ? I've said it before , gigging sucks.
only imagine how many bass and other game fish get stabbedThis is the point of my post that some may have missed. Unfortunately gigging is a sport where you can and will mistake the identity of game fish. It's not unlawful to stab a gamefish. It's unlawful to keep it though. I can only imagine how many bass and other game fish get stabbed considering we are very cautious and careful law abiding citizens who have a passion for the river and the smallmouth
I went out yesterday to try again for some bass. The old school rogue was banging big fish like nothing else. Some friends came over and we took a gigging expedition over a several mile stretch. With the 50 degree water temps we saw fish from 8" deep to 10'. Most big bass were in flow behind an obstruction. We stabbed 4 limits of suckers and only two smallmouth casualties. One was from someone who hadn't gigged in 6 years. The other came from someone who gigs every week. It happens man.
Lol I am in full rut. No fishing for me til I tag out a buck or the season ends. Gigging reports from buddies are telling me that Smallie's are 100% in winter holes. Fish in a barrel fellas. Big girls are hanging together in their usual winter haunts.
I myself would consider 27" or bigger on the meramec is a trophy walleye. Amazingly I have caught em that size or bigger from Sullivan all the way to the ssippi. In the same exact spots every time.
