  1. i catch a few walleye every year in the james when the whites run my biggest was last year @ 18 inches
  2. yes they will shuttle and i would honestly skip horse creek and just float galena to blunks and and hit the cave hole and taylors shoal real hard 2 of the best places in the entire stretch for fishing imo. they even have a cabin at blunks if you wanted to make a weekend out of it.
  3. i honestly hope the river don't come up i like it when it stays down and keeps all the bass boats out of my back yard.
  4. yea i am around 4 miles below galena.
  5. me and some friends are already catching crappie around longs and the bend, but fingers crossed maybe they will make an early run and then another around may.. i usually start catching males around march. I live in between mccord bend and longs camp so ill post it up when i start hittin them
  6. I usually wait until spring myself, but you can catch them right now if you want to brave the cold or wait for a warm day. As for bait go to a bait shop and find shad entrails or sides (the entrails work way better IMO) since your fishing a river your best bet would be to find they deepest hole you can and try to fish the edges of it on the down stream side catfish are opportunistic feeders and they are cold right now so they like to lay up in low spots on the bottom or under cover and wait for food to come to them.
  7. A lot of clousers and i just threw together a few jigs i made with some dubbing and buck tail, i am not great at tying yet though i just started in November and my only guide is youtube.
  8. Yea Y bridge canoe is still around but they switched owners and the canoes are looking pretty ratty now but hey they float. But i dont think they have all the access points that James River Outfitters do. Hooten town is still around also but they close for the winter James River Outfitters is a really good rental Gary Benahm is the owner of JRO, His son and grand kids usually run it and are some of the nicest people around they usually do special rates on multiple canoes and you are way less likely to have your car broken into going through them because their campground that you leaver your car at is gated and there is always people there watching out they have showers and bathrooms with full rv hookups to boot.
  9. i live a stones throw away from the james and i have fished it for 14 years i also guided it for awhile until school got in the way i have fished all over the country and i honestly would not trade the james river for any place i have ever fished as for not having large smallmouth in the lower james i have personally caught several 18 inch smallies and my record is 23 inches. i worked at two canoe rentals in galena while i was in high school Y bridge canoe rental and james river outfitters in my opinion J.R.O. is the better of the two rentals (good people, prices and nice boats) the best float for your money would be cox ford to galena its an 11.4 mi float you leave your car at their gated campground and you can take as long as you want, Crane creek dumps into the james about 3 miles below Cox, Crane creek has a good population of wild rainbows (catch and release only) Here is the number and url for J.R.O. 417-357-6443 Home: 417-357-6447 cell:417-830-1344 http://www.jamesriveroutfitters.com/
  10. Me and my friend were out playing with the fly rods a few days ago along the chunk rocks just past longs camp and caught around 10 a piece on pearl clousers with read eyes they weren't big the biggest one was a little larger then my hand.
  11. I don't know about a breeding population but i have seen a mountain lion on my grandmas place 2 deer seasons in a row now she has 1500 acres in Ozark county right next to another 1000 acres of conservation land, This year i got a real good look at it, it walked about 50 yards out in front of my stand right through my food plot. My friend also killed a small doe this year that had claw marks on its back right below the loins that were pretty deep. We contacted the conservation about it and they didn't seem surprised an agent came out and looked at the deer and asked if we minded them putting up some trail cameras and never heard back from them, which i don't mind really the cat isn't hurting anything and i would like to set up a blind or a trail cam and get some pictures of it myself. If i do i will gladly put them up for you all to see.
  12. i did really good on the rapala x rap last year green back with a white belly it caught everything (really good for white bass too) i also like to keep some salty craws around usually 2 inch pumpkin seed brown or green. and my favorite lure of all time for bass is the zara puppy green with black spots and a white belly
  13. as far as rules and regs the james river ends in galena after the Y bridge. But it still looks like a river all the way to asher cane bottom then it starts to open up into a lake
