Angler. It's shorter and has an honorable history. A fisher is either a mammal or a bird, although I will concede reasonable usage of flyfisher if appropriate. If quoting someone, it stays fisherman. Don't obsess over trivialities.

Jo Schaper of River Hills Traveler here. This is official re the spearfishing smallie guy "I’ve heard back from the agents and the answer is that an individual has been cited for the Courtois incident. However, we cannot release further information until the court action has been completed." -Candice Davis, MDC Southeast Region information officer. We're planning to follow up on this one.
