  1. There are a number of lodges on the river. The Miramichi is a very long river, with many branches. I fish the Little Southwest, and the Northwest. Where we fish is very close to Ted Williams pool. I did get to attend the Miramichi Salmon Association meeting while up there. They held it at the lodge. The fare at the lodge is $270. a day all inclusive for five days of fishing. Airfare and car rental was $821.USD for the time I was up there. I prefer to drive into Canada rather than the hassle of customs at Toronto or Montreal. I do fly out of Springfield. Have a great trip to Alaska!!
  2. Hi Phil, The name of the lodge is Upper Oxbow. They are a four star lodge. The fare is $270.USD per day for everything. I fly from Springfield to Bangor, ME, and drive the rest of the way in. Northwest has a flight out of Springfield at 0600 in the morning. It gets into Bangor at 1430. That gets me to the lodge before dark. The early run started the first week of June this year. I book in the last week of June. These fish are fresh from Greenland, and wild. The early run fish run up to 10+ pounds. The fall run fish in late September run up in the 30+ pound range. A combination bear hunting and salmon fishing trip can be got for the late run. These are all Atlantic Salmon. Atlantics run up the river to spawn and stay up river until the ice break up in the spring. They come back down starting in April going back to Greenland. Prior to the early run, sea run brook trout go up river to spawn. All these fish are totally nuts wild. Lots of casts per fish, but a blast when they take. I had to sacrifice myself to eating fresh lobster three days in a row. This a great lodge with the very best of guides. Two persons per guide. Debbie and Dale Norton the owners own some pools and have access to others, and also to some native Canadian pools down stream. http://www.upperoxbow.com/index.htm is the url. The very best to you all in Alaska!
  3. It sounds like a great trip. I'm maxed out this year on travel fishing. I got back from the Mariachi River in New Brunswick about three weeks ago. We had a good year this year. The early run was big. They are totally wild and make for a good fight. We fish catch and release. These salmon go up the river to spawn and stay up all winter and go back to sea in April. The whole trip including airfare was $2171. USD. That included five days of guided fishing, airfare, car rental, room board in a five star lodge and licenses. It was a blast. Anyone looking to fish Atlantics let me know. I wish everyone going to Alaska the very best. I talked to Bill last night. He is fired up to get up there and get into some big fish. If I had some cash left I would sign up.
  4. You might want to take a look at BPS White River Fly Shop™ Pocket Front Breathable Waders for $139.USD. High grade 5 layer nylon upper is laminated with a 100% waterproof/breathable membrane. Features a deluxe front handwarmer pocket with zippered organizer pockets, inside utility pocket, top draw string and side cinch straps for better fit, elastic adjustable suspenders with quick release buckles, reinforced knee and seat, self fabric gravel cuffs with lace keeper, neoprene stocking foot with high density neoprene foot for comfort, and accessory D-rings. Color: Tan. Imported. I did a bit of research on these and they are probably made by Hodgman. I just bought them the other day. The reports I have been getting is they are very durable. The new ones are grey and black. The following is the site for Hodgman: http://www.hodgman.com/dyn_prod.php?p=STRW430
  5. TFO rods are great. I have three Pro rods and I just bought a couple of their new Axiom rods. My new Axiom rods (9' 5wt and 9' 8wt) needed to be stepped up one line weight than what the rods call for. If people will send in their warranty cards to TFO they will not have a problem.
  6. I just got the new Orvis wide arbor reel. It is a great reel. It has the same drag system as the mid arbor. It can be used in salt water. I bought a 7-9wt. With all the rain and all I have had little time to mess with it. If it is as good as the mid arbor Ovis (I have two of them)no worries then. The machining is great. The drag settings are numbered for reference. This reel is available in 1-3wt all the way up to 11-13wt. The pricing is great for this quality reel.
  7. CHOTA STL. Mine are four years old and still going strong. Be prepared if you go fishing in warmer water(60F) to wear lighter socks.
  8. The green mid arbor is only available at BPS. It is a great color for a reel. I thought it looked like OD color from days of long ago.
  9. I have been fishing with Cortland lines for years(1960). Every once in awhile I stray to try a line. The best bang for the buck is Cortland Classic Peach. A high riding line. I just went back to a double taper on my four weight last year. Great presentation for dry fly fishing and great for roll casting. The first double taper I bought was in 1960. A buddy of mine and I split the cost of the line and split the line.
  10. A TFO series one is a great buy at $99.99. The warranty is lifetime unlimited. For and additional $15.00 at BPS you can get the rod with a Hobbs Creek II wide arbor reel.
  11. BPS has a new wader for $139. I'm going to pick up a pair. Five layers in the knees and five layers in the seat. They look very much in great detail to the new Hodgman Wader for $239. A couple of zip pockets in the front, hand warmer pocket in the front, a place for tippets, and an inside pocket. These waders look like a huge upgrade. Did I mention breathable.
  12. Some time back I tried to suggest it would be nice to double up on trips to Tany , and split the gas for the trip. I got one reply. This was on another forum. It was almost like I proposed a joke. It is not a joke anymore. Our government state and federal seems to think the gas crooks can get away with any price they want. How do they get away with charging more for gas when supplies are low. The gas is not worth more. I also never believed in seasonal rate increases in hotels.
  13. Hi Michael, You got the wrong Bob A.
  14. That should take some pressure off Taney!!!
  15. I have been using Firefox for a long time. I will not use IE or Outlook. We are very lucky we have open source programs out there to use. I do not use Thunderbird as I have never had a problem with Eudora. I just upgraded my version of Eudora. I also use AVG for an antivirus program. I automatically get updates on AVG daily, and have AVG scan my PC daily.
  16. I rarely use a strike indecator, but when I do I use 3/8" white indicators pegged from the bottom and not the top. I do use crackle back at times. Even at my advanced age I can see the crackle back. I also tie off the eye of the crackle back and not the bend. Just my thoughts on the subject.
  17. Soaping down with Fell's Naptha soap will stop the stuff in its tracks. As said before it was even in the Boy Scouts manual. This is no old funky remedie. It works and has for years. Now, the problem is finding the soap. The lye content was very high.
  18. I just checked Continental Airline online and their fare with tax was $645.USD with three departure times. I did a search for May 2007. Bill me later is also available through Continenal at no extra cost as long as you pay within the terms. I'm buying my ticket next month and the payment in full will not be due until 4/1/07.
  19. I have used Priceline a lot in the past, but never again. The micro second your price is accepted your card is charged. I'm planning a trip right now. I'm dealing directly with the airline via the net. Dealing with the airline direct is over $200. cheaper, and I get more choices on departure times. Priceline had me flying out of KC the last time. The flight was so early I had to travel to KC the night before which involved a hotel and parking for a week. Coming back was as bad as they got me to KC in time to get to the Triangle in KC at rush hour. As far as contacting Priceline about anything forget about it. If you do get someone to answer the phone it is always no. Plus they charge you for their services. Flight insurance is a must no matter how you fly. I'll be buying my ticket six months ahead of time. Anything could happen health wise or what ever. I think the cost was $56.USD for me because of my advanced age. I believe I can tie it into my ticket, and I do not have to pay for the ticket for 90 days.
  20. It was my understanding that the O2 has been way down. The people at the hatchery have been trying to keep the level at 4ppm. It is my understanding that 4ppm is just bearly enough. Trout like the O2 level to be 6ppm or better. It might take a fountain to aireate the water to a proper level of O2. The fish this year have been of the no fight kind, but if fish are starved of the proper amount of O2 that would account for the poor fight in the fish. When the thermal inversion takes place Taney will the good fishery that it could and shoud be.
  21. Davy, 11' 5wt that will give you some reach. The last time I saw you casting you were using a 10' 4wt with a very high cross wind. The wind did not seem to bother you at all. Robert
  22. You have a great Mom. That is fine equipment.
  23. Hi Davy, Like yourself I think Lefty is a man of integrity. Putting that aside I really like the TFO rods. As said before a lot of bang for the buck. More than just an upgrade from an inexpesive rod as suggested. I just picked up a couple of Ovis Battenkill Mid Arbor reels. I'm on the mend from a week of flu like symtoms. Yesterday I put backing and line on both reels. Very smooth and very well made. I've had some Orvis gear most of my life. Good honest Vermont folks. Fly fishing equipment is like anything else. What ever suits the person.
  24. TFO is a lot of bang for the buck. I do not think that looks count for much. The fish do not give a darn. They are good light rods. Keep in mind that Lefty is the designer of the TFO rods. If memory serves me he was the rod designer for Sage prior to TFO for 25 years. I do not think you could get Lefty to put his name on anything unless he thought it was right. TFO sells tubes. Red in color I think if that really matters.
  25. I bought Chota boots on the advise of a friend. They are one size larger than my normal shoe. I wear a pair of Redhead wading stickings, and wader pants this time of year. The boot size depends on the brand of boot. I have had men use Simms wading shoes with the same size as their street shoes. I would not buy a pair of wading boots without wdaers on.
