gonna try and get started this spring
moose50 replied to moose50's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
thanks for the responses guys again this is a whole new ballgame to me and the help is greatly appreciated. would i need a large arbor reel or not, advantages disadvantages of them? -
ive got a 18 ft gruman jonboat with a 25 hp johnson tiller steer. its went everywhere i wanted to go on the tanneycomo with no problems. also have been on the illinois river a few times with it although you do get a lil stiff turned sideways driving for longer distances. i wouldnt recomend it for bigger lakes unles there is little boat traffic and little wind. its a great small lake and river boat though and would recomend it for anyone rubbing up against trees or worried about submerged obstacles. big enough for 4 and yet light enough for those same 4 guys to pull it through a log jam to get to another fishing spot

looking to purchase a fly rod/reel combo. would probly use it on the tanneycomo and maybe the st francois river at sam baker state park if i ever get down there again, and the occaisional outing around here at some ponds or lakes. been looking at the white river stuff from bass pro. i dont really know what to get only have done it once and that wasnt for very long. would like to keep it under 200-250( wouldnt mind being able to get some othere nesecity gear with that money also). is there any opinions on any models i should look at. id like to get something that was pretty much ready to go beins though i dont know much about them. and what other things are a must have when fly fishing. and maybe a handful of fly recomendations for allaround fishing crappie bluegill bass for around here(im in central illinois ) i know ya try to match the hatch but if ther are some basic flies that would work about anywhere for a beginer that would be helpful and what flies to buy for tanneycomo i know just go to phils when i get to branson but ill have some time between now and then and ill probly start stocking up on them sooner or later. from what ive read on here i guess you cant have too many flies in your box. thanks in advance i know im askin the right folks

now thats one gnarly trout. those fish are what dreams are made of...mine at least. nothing like that to get a kid hooked for life, the most important thing is that they have fun doing it and thats all it takes. great job to you both and awesome fish!!!!!

? Guess this fly game ?
moose50 replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
i have no idea, never tied a fly and ive only fly fished 1 time but this is a guessing game right. looks like a leach to me but not sure. originator of the pattern.....hmmm another guess here phil lilley of the upper tanneycomo -
you could just add a hunting section to this forum and it would take care of itself maybe, dont know if you would want that on here but i think it would be fine if you did that and it wouldnt really take up any more of your time i dont think. novice hunter here myself. we have some great deer here in central illinois.

i like to crappie fish, actually if somethin bites my line im happy. i dont know much about the ozark area for panfish. i usually get up to mark twain a few times a year, not as much as i like but some is better than none i guess. twain is ok, it kinda took a hit the last 10 years or so but last year a guy at the baitshop told me that mdc says its on the rebound and lookin better. i dont know really never reaserched any further on it. ill be leaving reports on the twain lake section once i finally get to go back up there.

just want to point out that what i said prviously about geting one mounted it would be that one only. i dont have any fish hanging on my walls as it is. i understand some are against it and thats fine with me. but if i do catch a biggie and i dont mean a 20" i will probly get it mounted, the replicas i have seen really arent that great in my opinion if anyone has any sites realated to replicas i would be more than willing to check it out. but like i said the big one would be on my wall. after that if i ever do catch another one it would be c&r except for the lil buggers ya eat. thats how i stand on the subject, i dont really consider myself a head hunter and dont want that reputation on here. i love taneycomo and dont think anyone should go there to get a trophy every year, catch one ya but dont keep it if you already have a hanger at home.

a couple years ago a co worker of mine caught a sculpin on a night crawler we didnt know what the heck it was till about 6 months later when i seen a picture of one in a field and stream trout article. said that they are a favorite treat of the monsters . had i known that ....would it have been legal for one of us to hook it on and fish with it out of the trophy waters of course. they said if you use one to knock it out first(or else it would get you snaged by getting under a rock or something to that effect) then fish it like a jig around cover. just wondering if any of you have used live sculpin or minows and how well have ya done on them?

phil, ive experianced the same thing quit a few times fishing off the docks with powerbait when im down there. i always thought it was from the motion going up and down with the waves making the bait bouce and getting the fish to bite but the sediment thing makes a lil more sense.
-
i dont think you should worry about keepin fish that are legal above or below the slot, thats why they are legal they are outta the slot. while i dont think people should keep multiple trophies i dont see a problem with people getting one mounted for the den or living room. i personally havent caught a monster like that but i have to say if i do catch a monster i would probly keep it. so that being said any good taxidermist that are fair priced and do good work down there if i have any luck this coming august. and jdavis ive goten some nasty looks too, just goin up there with a spinning rig. thats is what gives the fly fishermen that stuck up reputation. while i know its not all of yas and im not accusing anyone on here of it but some of the guys i ran into down there had some attitude problems. i guess i would be mad at the world to if i was tryin to fish with 15 other guys in the same 6'X 20' section of water. or maybe i was just a obvious tourist lol at the same time there have been a small handful of fishermen down there that were hospitable and talked a little.
-
now thats a interesting one. top or bottom rack? thanks for sharing
-
ya thats a gorgeous fish lilley, do jigs work well in august. ive tried a few up towards the dam and i really never did to well. maybe the jigs were too big, or heck maybe im just not that lucky lol i think i was using black and olive colored jigs at the time
-
ill have to check that out thanks for the info catman

my dad told me he used to use chunks of bacon on a piece of twine to catch em. tie the bacon to the string let er set for a while and pull it up and they are still hangin on the bacon. never tried it myself but lemme know if you do and if ya get anything off of it. good luck

hey thanks for the reply and tips, ill have to try that out sometime, 15-20 for the trout in the foil on the grill too? unfortunately frozen is about all i have for trout. saved me a lil bag of fillets from august for the super bowl. no not fresh but still better than just about anything from around here. another question after i got back from my trip this year soem guy told me it was illegal to bring trout over the mo state line into illinois. i told him he was full of it but honestly i dont know and never heard that before. if so why?
-
pretty cool lilly, checked it out a cpl times but it was already dark and couldnt see anything. i got a great view now though even in central illinois, keep up the good work!! i dont see the aquarium either
-
would you fish the jigs like drift fishing with the power bait only jiggin it some? i havent really tried too much jig fishing on the tanney but 2 or 3 years ago we tore em up with lil cleos spoons basicly jiggin them up n dow anchored off on the outside of the bends in water around 12-18ft id say. caught a 19" rainbow other than that we didnt get anything real big. the water had to be running though it seemed when it wasnt they didnt bite as well. we found that out this last year. this was all downstream of fall creek(other than the 19"fish) where there is a lil deeper water. we usually started on the first big bend and fish any of the trees or cover we found in the water. seen some big ones but no reaction from them. still cool to see the monsters swim by just to remind ya that they ARE in there. first bend past fall creek heading downstream

nice fish there greg glad ya posted.
-
nice pic of the gobblers
-
very nice fish tippet, can only imagine the fight that guy put up. my buddie caught one close to the size of the lil fish last year on a rooster tail...no fear i guess
-
thats an idea peegee i have a 25 horse now but i wouldnt mind getting one of those bass trackers with the jet drive on it i think that rates at 175 not sure though. how bout keepeing the test drives between the last resort at branson and rockaway that way it doesnt bother the people on the docks downstream of the lake front as much or the trophy waters at all and from what i remember there is a decent amount of water down that way with not much on the shoreline a lil past janet dailys old place
-
mine was a 19" rainbow near outlet 3 (if that is the one with the cable) on a lil cleo cant remember it was either on a rainbow or brown pattern. would like to see some pictures if yall have any of your trophy catches.

last august on table rock we were skiing and doin some recreational boating on my parents 28ft ski boat. anyway pullin my buddy on skis he falls off we go back swing the rope around to him getting ready to take off and outta nowhere this bass boat had to have been from the bps resort we were close to. flies by topend about 15 ft away from my buddy. cpl idiots. we had a lil island we made base at and my parents and my wife and 2 yr old son were in the water swimming and the same 2 idiots swang back around doin all kinds of crazy sh@# if i had a gun i woulda shot em really that pissed me off lil kid out in the water and they are goin balls to the wall within 30 ft couldnt keep up with em either hard to do when a boat half the weight has around the same horses pushin it and no didnt get the boat number either. just a bad deal and lucky no one was killed by theese clowns not being arrogant by saying 28 ft ski boat my point of that wich i forgot to say is its not hard to see something that big and red. we had a ski flag up too
