Nice Rainbow Caught This Am Up By Trout Hollow
Jeremy Hunt replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
Can you say "football"...and it's a female. WOW. Great fish! You don't see them like that to often. -

If you can get down here I'll show you some of my honey holes. I'm off on Wednesday and the cfs is prime for hooking some monsters. Give me a call if you can make it. I hooked one last week that was truly amazing, big male.

May 29 2009 Low water one day and streamer fishing the next Had a few trips with some good ‘ole boys from Kansas City and Atlanta. These guys were all members of TU and a few of they were lifetime members that have fished all over the world. They were clients of John Berry that were down as a group so he asked if I could help out. We really had some great water and the results were just as good. The first day I had Jim and Pete and they were about three years into the sport. We were able to hook tons of fish in low water, we actually lost count about an hour into the day and it stayed that way pretty much the whole day. Nothing big, but Jim did hook a brown that gave him a lesson in letting the fish get on the reel. Jim, I think tried to stop him too soon. I never saw the fish, but I could tell it was big by the way he took off. It was good practice and I’m sure he’ll learn from that. If you don’t have a few big fish under your belt you can bet you’re in for a few to get off before you understand how to get these big boys in. The next day I had Bob and Gary. Gary wanted to throw streamers and the day couldn’t have been any better, cloudy skies with a few showers off and on. We hooked four really nice browns in the course of the day with each hooking two a piece. We caught a bunch of other fish on streamers along with cutthroats and rainbows. We had a few bigger ones follow all the way to the boat, but when they noticed the boat they left the building. I was able to do some footage for everyone to see so I hope you enjoy them as much as we did. It was one of the better days I had streamer fishing this year. Today I went out and did some pleasure fishing with my buddy John. We put in around 3pm, it was sunny skies and I didn’t think we would catch anything too big because there were a ton of boats and debris in the water. Well… I learned something today. That wasn’t the case at all. I broke off one of the biggest browns I’ve had on in the last month. And hooked it 20 minutes into the day, when I say “broke off’ I literally mean just that. I broke my 8wt on this fish. I wish I could’ve landed this beast. He was pushing 27-28 inches and it was a beautiful fish. I had him on for a few minutes and thought I had this one in the bag. It truly broke my heart and I’m still thinking about it as I’m writing this. John managed to hook his, but me on the other hand I couldn’t land any of them. I must have had four more big hits, but couldn’t get any of them in. I think the other rod I had on board wasn’t stiff enough to get a good hook set. All I can say is I’m going to 9wt with the 450 grain. I think it wears out 8wts that’s for sure. So the tip I can give you is when you think the water is bad because of debris floating in the water, I think it gets the bigger browns to feed because they don’t want to comb through all the trash to find smaller stuff when they can key in on what they know is the good stuff, which is something big to eat. I got footage of Johns brown, I should have it uploaded tomorrow.

Well to be honest, its the camera I'm using, must be when you put your finger on the mic.

So I came up to Branson and did all types of fishing, and it was alot of fun. Check out the "live" footage.

Nothing works better than the peanut, but if you're after BIG browns, this is the one to use. Two days ago I had two browns that were both pushing 30 inches. The first one got off and the second one took my fly,but that's ok because I got to see the take and I'm figuring out what get's these big browns to eat during the day. It really is amazing. I fished Taney yesterday in the low cfs levels in the morning and these trout like streamers here as well. I turned two that were pushing 22-23inches, both rainbows.

Randall, I got a little idea from Kelly's patterns, but all me my friend. The sculpin, I'm keeping that under the hat until the article comes out, then I'll put it on the site with how to steps.

So with tons of hours on the water and experimenting on the vise for the last five months, I finally found one that really works. The right profile and the hooks are both key for triggering big browns.

It looks faster then what it is. it's probably going about 3.5 mph. You'll do fine out there, just don't use an anchor and like one person said, make sure your motor is in working shape. That's the most important thing. Good luck out there.

Sounds like fun!

I remember that now. Your right it was own by that couple before. I fish as much as I can with my father, the only bad thing is I'm getting alot busier with guiding so it doesn't happen as much, and moving down to Arkansas, we're not around eachother like we used to be. He really believes in what I'm doing and that makes me feel really good. You always want your parents approval. My mom isn't here to see it, but she's smiling above. Love you mom.

Bman, My pops introduced me to all my fishing. He used to let me drive his boat when I was probably 8yrs old, at the lake I grew up on which was Lake fork. I owe it all to my dad and God who open the door for this career, if he didn't fish who knows what I would be doing with my life right now. I thank both everyday. We actually hugged each other after he caught that fish. The fly tying, all self taught with no instructions or classes. Just got busy on the vise about a week after I started fly fishing. I couldn't afford those scuds at a 1.50 each. I actually bought all of Steel's (bait and tackle store on 165) stuff when he passed away. That was before any fly shop was on 165 by the dam. He had the best scuds hands down. I sure miss his ties. Really not pretty, but they caught a bunch of fish. I'm sure you remember if you've been fishing here longer then 15yrs, which I think you have.

I don't think so, but it looks like a brut stocker. Got a pic, we could compare that way.

Russ Maddin used to fish with Kelly Galloup before he became popular in the fly fishing industry. Russ actually bought his fly shop before he went out west and opened Slide Inn. I talk to Kelly about once a week and he believes a lot in what patterns Russ comes out with. When I lived in Michigan I knew Kelly then and I saw this whole "streamer stuff" evolve. I talked to Russ about two weeks ago because I think the circus peanut pattern needs a different hook for these browns we have on the White. I’m now experimenting with some hooks he told me to try. Great guys. Kelly and I have also been comparing patterns and he’s got some knew ones up is sleeve. I’m tying them as we speak, but haven’t fished them yet. Crazy patterns. His ideas are SICK! So that’s the story my friend. Oh, Kelly even says, if he had one fly for an articulated pattern he would throw the circus peanut hands down. I fished it at Taney the last three days and caught several fish in 11,000-14,500. So they work on Taney as well. Google Russ Maddin to learn the history about his patterns. He’s got some pretty good ones.

Here's the "Live" report side of it.

I had a few days off so I decided to take my pops fishing. I spent three days and it's been a blast. I did some recording and should have a "live" video up sometime in the next day or so. Anybody coming to fish Taney, I would say you'll do fine out there if you have a boat. Here's one we caught yesterday. I was so happy my dad caught it.

Glad you liked it!

John & I took advantage of fishing this evening when all the boats left the water.

Here's our second of many more to come. We're going to try to put one out once a week. This edition is about switch rods and another technique I developed over the years.
-
I really didn't understand it. That's all. Thanks for the heads up.

From someone who grew up fishing Taney and now fishing Arkansas everyday, I think they both have different things to offer. It really depends on the month and what kind of fishing you like to do. The dry fly fishing is totally nuts down here during certain times of the year. Hooking bigger browns on a regulr basis happens alot more, except for Oct. & Nov. at Taney. You can't beat Taneycomo during the brown runs, but the White has one as well which is later in the year, Dec. & Jan. Those are the times to hit this one. I can't knock either river because of the stocking program, tons of fish. The only thing I don't like about Taney is there's not enough water to go around. Sometimes at night, but that's becoming crowded as well. Nobody take this the wrong way, but the White has made me a better fly fisherman hands down. I can't wait to come back up there and spend some time applying what I've learned down here which is streamer fishing. I bet is works there just as good.

Thanks for the info. I like using mine for big dries and swinging streamers in low water. Still have lots to learn about this whole "switch rod thing", but I'm having a blast doing different things. During the shad kill I was throwing white zoo cougars on the surface and getting some great responses. I haven't used mine for nymphing under indicator rigs yet.
