  1. Not sure who makes the product or if the product is still available but the Dam Store outside of Eureka Spring Arkansas use to carry a product that as a braider shock leader for light weight tippet (6X-8X). Almost universally a 6wt rod is too much for a 7X and you have to be careful with 6X. So now you are what we would call an “even” fly fisher…not go buy yourself a good G series 4wt Scott fly rod.
  2. An interesting article from a couple of years ago. http://flyanglersonline.com/features/ozark/ozark101104.html
  3. A 7.5' 3wt will be great for the early morning trico hatches, fishing the upper pools and catch and release areas but the lower part of the river is little wider and a 3wt for me is a little light in the britches…I assume you are fishing a double taper with a 3wt so the afternoon winds will not be your friend. If I was going to fish one rod for RR river I would use a 8’ 4wt with weight forward line. That would be my recommendation and worth what you paid for it. If you want real good help stop in at Tim's Fly Shop, Tim knows RR inside and out and has forgot more about fishing RR than I will ever know. I cut my teeth fly fishing RR 30 years ago this summer with a 5/6wt fiberglass rod and a Martin automatic reel.
  4. I think there has always been a little natural reproduction on Taney but not enough to make any difference one way or the other in fish population…but it is kind of neat.
  5. Rolan, Your comments and memories mirror mine to the letter. I do remember using a fiberglass fly rod with a Martin automatic real, all of which I still have and purchased from and Otasco, when I was 12 catching big rainbows on fly that now days would be called a Pistol Pete. By the way, I don’t remember seeing too many fly fishermen back in those days and catch and release…well you didn’t see much of that either and as a matter of fact we really didn’t know about it then.
  6. This May will be my 30th year of fishing Taney and wondered if others would care to reflect the changes they have seen over the years.
  7. Amen...Taney is being free enterprised to death now.
  8. Scott 8'6" G series
  9. Boaters and waders are one of the significant issues on Taney. With the numbers of boaters and waders increasing yearly, combined with the existing methods some boaters use the water, it is only a matter of time until there is an accident and we lose a life. Maybe not allowing they boats past a certain point unless there is a certain amount of generation present…coupled with a speed limit in the upper portions of the river. Bottom line is waders and boater both have the right to use the water but at some point safety needs to become the greater issue.
  10. Tierra Del Fuego is a great place to go fish for BIG browns...getting there is a pain but worth the trip. http://www.solarexpert.com/fishing/Tierra-Del-Fuego.html
  11. My point was deliberating the shuffling is a little like debate the color of the curtains in the bedroom while the kitchen is on fire... I will try and make myself more clear in future post.
  12. If that much of the lake is wadable. Comparing Taney to the San Juan is like comparing Beaver lake to lake Superior they are not event the same type of water or fishery. For the record I am not a shuffler and don’t care for it but there are bigger issues to address at Taney that impact the fishery in a negative manner.
  13. State employees had some of “other people’s money” and they decided to spend it.
  14. That is great advice…but take a cup of coffee and go down for the opening whistle just to watch….it is very entertaining.
  15. I voted for no change....The MDC either don’t, won't or can't enforce that laws they have now with any regularity. The two issues I would like to see addressed before shuffling would be: 1) Boat speed in the wading sections of the river 2) Tournament trout fishing. But first I think there needs to be more effort spent in enforcing current regulations.
  16. No change
  17. I was there but no one showed up at the rendevous point so I went on and fish by myself.
  18. Can anyone come this Sunday?
  19. The importance of a fly reel for trout greatly depends on your style of fishing. One of my old fishing buddies, who has passed out of this life God rest his soul, viewed the fly reel a devise that gathered and held line and then there is me who use it the reel to help protect 6x – 8 x tippets. So like I said it GREATLY depends on your fishing style.
  20. I use to trap when I was a kid and couldnt wait for my issue of Fur Fish and Game a great magazine that I still think is in publication. Before the government subsidies ran out it was a great way to make some extra cash for a kid growing up in rural Oklahoma.
  21. When is the Rendevous going to take place? I am always up for and excuse to fish Roaring.
  22. While I am not a big fan of tournament fishing for various reason that does not mean that it is wrong, I just don’t care for it. If you don’t like tournament trout fishing you have lot of options; don’t fish on those weekends they are having tournament, write your legislator, don’t support business that support tournament fishing etc. As far as the boaters go there are more good ones than bad ones on Taney but the bad ones sure make if rough on the rest of us. I boat and wade and the unsafe boaters can sure make it tense at times. tippet7 Iknow the guide you are talking about and I don’t refer clients to him and I make sure people who mention the name know what kind of a sportsman he is too. The guide in question should take a second and reflect on what he is doing….Most of us the visit Taney are there for recreation and guides are there trying to make a living…doesn’t seem very wise to piss off potential clients or people who might make referrals. FYI, when I am wading I prefer boats to go by nice and slow and not on plane. I prefer a little wake or being puckered for a few seconds….besides the fish don’t care one way or another.
