  1. Also planning a trip on the upper stretch this weekend. Where does the Buck Hollow gauge need to be to paddle a loaded canoe at the prongs? Also, how far is it from Buck Hollow to Bay Creek or Alley Spring. I see different estimates depending on where I look.
  2. So how far is it really from Buck Hollow to Alley Spring? The river map I'm looking at would suggest it is around 17 miles, but the outfitters list it at 24 miles. Also, is it safe to leave a vehicle overnight at Buck Hollow and Alley Spring, what about the Prongs?
  3. I'm making plans for a 2 night float on the upper Jack's Fork the first weekend in May. This will be the third year in a row we have tried to get on this river. Up to this point we have been foiled by weather or river levels. It looks like the water should be sufficient this year. We would like to put in at the Prongs if the water is right, but would be OK with putting in at Buck Hollow if not. Can anyone give me an ideal water level range for the gauge at Mountain View in order to put loaded canoes in at the Prongs? Assuming, the water is sufficient to put in at the Prongs, what would be the right place to take out? Would we run out of river to quickly if we tool out at Alley Spring?
  4. We are headed to the North Fork next Friday for a family float trip. I am wanting to make sure we stay in the best water. We enjoy the folks at ROL and like to float from Hammond down to their property, but I was wondering if we would be better off doing the lower stretch from Blair bridge to Dawt Mill. How is the water just below Hammond? Thanks in advance for any input.
  5. I think we may still try to do Round Spring to Logyard. Has anyone used the Roberts Field access? It looks like that might cut off about 5 miles. Are there any special baits to consider for Current River smallies? Is a light action rod and 6lb test an appropriate set up? Thanks to everyone for their input!
  6. It sounds to me like it is all a matter of how much time we want to spend fishing and we will need to keep track of our mileage to make sure we don't run out of time or river depending on where we decide to take out. Can anyone tell me where I can get a good river map aside from the ones posted online?
  7. We will shuttle ourselves. What is an appropriate miles per hour estimate?
  8. I am headed to the Current for a two night float starting next Friday since the upper Jacks Fork appears to be unfloatable. Obviously I would prefer to avoid the weekend altogether, but that is not an option. I would still like to avoid as much of the party scene and jet boats as possible though. How is the stretch from Round Spring to Logyard? I believe that is around 35 miles. Is that an appropriate distance for two and a half days on the river?

    Water Levels

Crazy morning on the lower James Saturday. Cooled down with a nice breeze right at dawn. No one else on the river and the fish were feeding. Nothing very large, but lots of smallies, largemouth and Kentuckies hitting on buzz baits all morning. Even after the sun was high.
  10. So has anyone tried to float this week on the lower James? I thought at one time I saw that 3.1 on the Glean gauge was used as the MFL. Is there enough water to float below Hootentown or Kerr access? What has the smallie fishing been like early?
  11. It looks like the water is dropping out fast on the upper section. Would we be better off floating below Pruitt?
  12. What would you expect the cold front to do to the fishing?
  13. Considering an overnight float this Saturday. We would like to do some fishing along the way. Is Ponca to Pruitt a reasonable float without rushing? How does the water look on this section? Fishing any good?
  14. It will be my first time on the river Saturday. Myself and three others will be doing an overnight trip. We plan to put in fairly early at 17 bridge and float to Alley Spring. Being unfamiliar with the water levels, is this a reasonable two day trip if we plan to fish? Where in this stretch would you suggest to camp? Idealy we would leave a shorter portion to do on Sunday so we can get home at a decent time.
