  1. I'll call you later today.
  2. Jackson looks like a good fishing buddy - he could be a brother to my Hudson. Good video.
  3. I have this Rapala fillet knife combo new in box - the in-laws don't know I have a dozen electric fillet knives already - anyway it's brand new never used - but I did open it to watch the DVD once to see if I was missing some "new awesome fillet technique". I'm good, as it turns out. If you're local we can meet - as far as shipping - I'd rather not but we can talk.
  4. Water density changes with temperature so it's hard to get a lure to suspend perfectly without adding weight. I'm one that likes a lure to sit perfeclty suspended so if a lure sinks in very cold water I send it back. Storm suspend dots or strips are great for tuning lures but I like lead wire (for flytying) wrapped around a hook better.
  5. My favorite main line for spinning used to be Fireline, but I like NanoFil these days. I use a 7 or 8-foot leader (fluoro for everything except topwater) and it's the best I've ever used.
  6. I'll keep an eye out - sometimes they have guide 119's that were demo's marked way down over at the Bass Pro outlet store.
  7. There's spots around 10 - 12 feet but I think a floating line would be fine. I'd try a streamer that acts like a suspending jerkbait ( I tie bathchain eyeball Clousers) worked very slow over some timber.
  8. One of the best tools for scouting around while driving is the Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer for MO. I don't care if you have turn-by-turn GPS on your phone or whatever - it can't beat a big printed map. I have them for every state I do outdoor stuff in - some of the best money you can spend. http://www.amazon.com/Missouri-Atlas-Gazetteer-DeLorme/dp/0899333532/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1358602425&sr=8-2&keywords=gazetteer+delorme+missouri
  9. I like some of the deeper running suspenders like the XRap Deep 08 and 10 and the Staysee, but if I want to go deeper I really like the shad-shaped cranks like the XRap Shad or original balsa Shap Rap with lead weight added. You do have to throw the balsa ones on spinning gear but that's just fine with me.
  10. Hope this clears up any confusion:http://www.news-leader.com/article/20130110/LIFE06/301100030/shelvin-ramp-james-river
  11. There's a couple of them that Winter Up there. You even see them in the park sometimes.
  12. Very nice. I need to hit the James this weekend.
  13. I haven't had a problem with the stock hooks and I had some of the very first ones - maybe those were a bad run?
  14. There's enough to get the boat off the trailer, and just enough to let you run up or down 50-yards and then get stuck on a real shallow riffle.
  15. Suspending jerkbaits are my #1 followed by a 4" or 5" grub on a light 1/16 or so jighead slowly swam so it almost suspends. Jigs near the bottom work sometimes, but coldwater Bass suspend most of the time I've found them active. Some kind of cover (rocks, trees) on the steapest banks is where I'd start.
  16. If you had a canoe or kayak and got away from where everyone else fishes you'd do better - the James has some good Smallmouth in it. Lake Springfield has some nice Largemouth's, too - but again, you aren't gonna catch many from the shore.

    Carp?

There's carp in Linden and the Finley Park lake in Ozark. Actually, there's big orange Koi in the park lake, too - like a 20+ pounder.
  18. I was spin fishin back in the rain two Fridays ago and caught not one Brown, which I thought was odd. I usually get one or two no matter what time of year doing that. I think they're just a little late this year.
  19. SW kansas has always been hit and miss. Central Kansas is great but mostly private. I have my family there so I know the awesome spots, but the Walk-In-Hunter program is a great way for a guy willing to well, walk around, get into some interesting areas if they have the time.
  20. Another thing to pull the rod in the direction the flow is going (downstream)- helping the current to use the belly of the line to set the hook instead of going against it.
  21. Probably from the park lake, actually. But there are plenty of Crappie in both the James and the Finley.
  22. I don't know if they see "Rainbow Trout" when they hit that lure - could just be the wobble and flash that gets them more than the "little trout' look of it.
  23. You are going to get plenty of advice - but mine is to paddle as many of the models you think might be "the one" before you purchase. I will say that owning a solo expanded my fishing so much that words can't explain it. I can go upstream or down, wherever whenever - time is the only limit. I blame Al mostly. Or thank him, really.
