  1. Did you make it up to where you almost have to portage around the fast hole (with the log in it) or just fished the big pool right upstream?
  2. I like feathers on any lure with only two trebles. I don't like them on three treble hook lures. I've experimented with adding feathers to the tail of several non X-Rap lures, and I don't know if it makes a difference as much as getting the suspending part perfect, then lure color.
  3. Awesome report, and a good read also. Always love your reports, wish I had the time to expound here. Not so much these days.
  4. Flyfishing for them is tough in deeper water with a floating line, and sink tips are a pain, so I target smaller pools for "Rockies". You almost always catch them right near the bottom, so you'll need heavily weighted flies. I just stay on the edge of the timber, polarized shades are necessary to see where you're at. Some day I'll probably see one of you guys up there.
  5. Shipping is more than tax for a couple of jigheads, and I always want to look at shotguns!
  6. That spot (right near the T intersection of Riverside and Green Bridge Road) is commonly used by bank fishers, but access for putting in any watercraft is rough, to say the least. I've parked there after dropping my canoe right at the little chain fence that marks the end of Riversides property, then dragged the canoe throught the poison ivy to put in on the softer gravel bank on Riverside's property a few years back, but the bank-side brush has grown quite a bit since then, and the gravel bank isn't the same, either. It would be nice to have access right there, but it just isn't happening, and it only takes a little time to paddle up from the park anyway.
  7. Yeah, but they don't have Booyah Baby Boo Bass jig heads in 3/16 ounce. I did not see the signs. I have to go back over there. Darn. I'll look at shotguns when I'm over there, too.
  8. I was going to buy a certain type of jighead at Bass Pro Saturday morning early, only to discover they are re-modeling the entire fishing section. All of it. Extreme outdoor store makeover style. Fly shop is still open, but if you were going to go there and pick something up, you are out of luck.
  9. Fished the middle part of the James Monday. There water is down a little, but about normal for this time of year, and pretty clear. I used a little of this and that, the spinnerbait was working again, I was using a chartruese one reeled as quick as I could burn it "bulging" the surface, and they were either nailing it or missing. I caught about half of the fish on either a Stick-O (Bass Pro brand) or Tiki-Stik pitched back to the spot the fish missed the spinnerbait. I have some pictures but no time to load them.
  10. Do you mean just a canoe? A "white water canoe" is something like this: Or is it just like this:
  11. Cool, I'll probably see you guys, I'll be down there somewhere fishing Monday...
  12. Another thing to remember is no rod you'll ever own is right for both flipping and spinnerbaits. Way different needs in a rod, and trying to learn both on one rod will lead to frustration. You need to concentrate on one presentation and one casting and retrieving style to learn. Go slow.
  13. You never really know what will work on any given day until you get out there and start fishing. And you can't catch a fish on something you don't use.
  14. I know which hole you're talking about. Usually from there down to Riverside is full of smaller Bass, but loads of Rock Bass. Just filthy with them. Fun fishing.
  15. Neat. Some day I'd like to paddle one of those.
  16. Here I was wishing I was there fishing, but it was a little um, monsoon-like out there. Glad you guys stayed safe.
  17. Most of the easily accessed spots (like Riverside) get fished hard. I know I sound like a broken record on this topic, but if you get away from the crowd you'll do better.
  18. Awesome. That's the way to do a fishing report. Could of kept the shirt on, though.... at least for the pictures.
  19. I haven't used that "SubWalk' from Rapala, but any of the shallow suspenders like the XRap series or the small pointers have been awesome producers on days when fish are aggressive and picky. Good report.
  20. This is exactly right. The time to experiment is during a hot bite, not when nothing is working. So next time the fish are slamming your "favorite", try something else. I know its sounds hard to do, and it is. Al's right about the topwater thing - my favorite lure for walk/wade streams is my popper on my 6-weight fly rod. I sometimes out fish my spin fishing buddies because the are using some tube or Senko or whatever when the fish are aggressive and looking up.
  21. Cool. Good report.
  22. There's a spot where the county road parallels the River and an informal take out. You used to be able to access the river near the old steel bridge, but when the new bridge went up it it effectively blocked access there, which is too bad. I'll P.M. you.
  23. I fished the James Monday in the McCall Bridge area, and did pretty good. Best lure was a white compact spinnerbait "bulged" right under the surface. Nothing huge, just lot's of numbers. I did get towed around by what was probably a catfish that missed the spinnerbait but hit the soft jerkbait I threw back at the blow-up. It came loose and I never saw what it was. All in all a good trip. The James was slighlty off color, but clearing, and water levels were great. I wished I had the entire day to fish, It was nice despite the heat.
  24. Great report, and glad you could get out. Several headwater area of my rivers over here are like that creek - lightly fished, and hold more fish than most people think. I usually go after them with the favorite 6-weight fly rod instead of conventional gear, but whether it's six of one or half dozen of the other, it's still fun.
  25. Yeah, Table Rock this time of year is tough. I have relatives coming into town this next week who don't believe me, and are towing a boat from central Kansas all the way over here. I told to them forget it, we could just rent some extra canoes for the James or Beaver Creek. I still haven't floated from 125 down to the lake this year, is it less "messy" (logjammed) than last year? I had someone email me and I sure didn't know.
