I've ran through 4inches with my outboard jet when your on the river you will want the extra maneuverability. And if you haven't had a jet before then you almost have to relearn your river

It's not a must but if you want to do a lot of running on the James and not mess up your motor I would recommend a jet they aren't a must on the James as lots of prop boats are used but they are handy or a good kayak -
My name is Jacob McIntosh I'm fish the James river and table rock. I also do quite a bit of gigging on the James as well. I do all my fishing out of a 1752 blazer with a 60/40 mercury jet . I'm not particular on what I fish for just whatever bites, but river smallmouth hold a special place in my heart. If you see me out on the river feel free to say hi.
