I don't know if anyone has ever posted this, I searched and came up dry. I came across this late last year. Asked for it for Christmas but my wife said, in no uncertain terms, it would *NOT* be hanging in her home. Pshaw I say... The Women in Waders calendar. On sale now. Some nice lookin' trout in those pictures. Doubt the models caught them. Mikey

Ok. I've been talking about trying to get a fly tying kit. Until Valentines day (I suspect one will come then) I have borrowed an old vise and bobbin from a fella I work with. He dropped it off yesterday at work while I was taking my break. It was funny, here he was trying to show me how to set the tension on the bobbin and place the fly in the vise while my "customer assistance" button was dinging on the overhead. Now, I won't incriminate myself by saying where I work...but suffice it to say nobody was helping the customers in my department and I was easily 170 yards away from my desk watching some guy try to set up my thread, bobbin, and hook. I left him to his vise....assisted the folks needing help, and ran back to the breakroom to try my hand at tying *something*. Here are the supplies he brought for me: One inexpensive vise (but it works), 1 thread bobbin, 1 spool of olive thread, 1 spool of black thread (nearly empty), 1 tiny bit of flash and I think he said a size 14 hook. All that being said, with my limited supplies I managed to turn out quite possibly the only nymph that comes close to looking like Lindsay Lohan; ie. VERY THIN and SPARSE. I spent about 3 minutes on it as my ding ding button was going off again. I had no beads and couldn't figure out what to use for dubbing...so yea. It's thin. I'm still gonna throw it out and who knows...maybe some equally starved trout might take it as a sickly easy to catch food source. Here's a pic of it. I call this pattern the Hafass Nymph Oh yea...forgot to mention I had no idea how to do any form or fashion of a whip finish. Furthermore I had no precision scissors handy so I had to trim the flash and tag with a box knife. Glued the thread to the head of the hook with loctite super glue. It's all I had...now I'll go to the store and pick up some dubbing material, some beads, and a bright color thread to throw together some Y2Ks and even try my hand at some trout crack. I've read enough on the forums I think I can handle the trout crack. Does anyone ever tie it in a different set of colors or do you stick to the kinda cream/gray dubbing with the darker brown shellback? Mikey

he may fish well, but he sure killed one of my ball pythons. chanrged me $70 for a shot, died 2 days later. I only paid $65 for the whole darn snake. Bought it from him too! Can't fault him too much, herpetology is risky business and at least he tried to help me. Mikey

Hmm..not to brag, but in the fort smith river valley, we're sitting at 35 with drizzle right now. Did get a heckuva lotta rain before the noon hour though. All creeks and ditches were border line flooding the roads. I gotta leave at 6:30 for work in the morning. If I can get outta my driveway. Mikey

I've got that one, been playin it once in a while. Also, Buschtrou22 mentioned one from www.pishtech.com that is a fly fishing sim. It's got a littole better casting dynamics but the water animation is a little cheesy. Better looking ntrout though. I only downloaded the demo of the pishtech game, but I have the full version of the flysim game.

If ever i can catch anyone besides the purty ypung girls working there i will certainly ask 'em about it. Steve, i was poking around the BDS galleries and came upon the pic of andy nichols. didn't/doesn't he work at the woodsman? i used to buy reptiles and other critters off him at a pet store down here 10 yrs ago! mikey

I see, well I will certainly let him know tomorrow morning at work. I know it's not something he has done before on the white, this will be his first time with a boat, where-as something he had read about and seen done elsewhere and thought it may be the ticket for controlling the drift speed. All this being the case, how does everyone else drift? Methods and stuff... Mikey

On Indicators and whatnot

Terry is right, that opening flash is pretty sweet. I didn't expect the take when it happened. :-) Mikey -
I did sign up for the BDS newletter. So it's that close...I was severely mislead by Google Earth when trying to locate the beaver dam store via the address. Here is what Google EDarth gave to me when I plugged in Spider Creek and the address for the Beaver Dam Store Now I'm embarrassed when I look at the Spider Creek page, there is the BDS in yellow. Silly me... Not as far away as I had thought.

Jeremy: Thanks for the in depth reply as well as the visual aid. They sure don't look appetizing to me, but then my reheated spaghetti I just inhaled might not trip their trigger either. I have purchased a san juan worm...I think it would be the micro size...it came outta the Umpaqua bins at my local dealer. A size 16 zebra midge seems like a little easier fly to work with when it comes to my fumbly fingers tying it on. As far as Norfolk and such, since I'm riding with a buncha guys I kinda have to fish where they fish. I know they don't stay at BSD park but I'm not sure how far down the white they will be traveling. Not too far from the beer, I can promise that. As far as the boat, he says he will be hitching it up to drive a bit. His claim is that first he needs to come up with a good drift chain but that shouldn't be too hard. When I find out exactly what is gonna happen I may be givin' you a call to see if you can recommend any locations to me. Also, one day I hope to fish taney. Read so much good stuff about it...just not sure if I would get up to Mo often enough to offset the out of state license. Mikey

On Indicators and whatnot

Gee golly that's the most in depth explanation for favoring yarn indicators I've come across. Unfortunately I think it will be difficult to convince my wife right now I need her to go to the fabric store to grab some yarn, the local hardware store for some o-rings, and to pick up the floatant. I still don't know where I will come across that. I guess off the 'net. One question on the floatant: how long does the treatment last on the yarn? Are we talkin the life of the indicator or just an outing? And what kind of container does it come in? I've got the tube of gink but I doubt that is gonna work. Mikey -
Also www.flysim.com has a fly fishing simulator. The demo is a little limited but still passes the time. I bought the full version and have enjoyed it. I saw this one from pishtech a while back but no demo was available at that time. Thanks for the link, Busch! mikey

I hope one day to get up there around the BDS. A co-worker of mine frequents spider creek and speaks highly of your store. Just difficult juggling a work schedule, 3 kids and a double-shift working wife AND finding time to get away to fish. I'm not sure, I think mapquest puts the BDS at 2 hours from my house. How far away is spider creek from the BDS? Mikey

Any information you might need on fly fishing and tying, you've come to the right place. Now that's not to say I have any of that information... At any rate, welcome aboard the board (redundant i know...) Mikey

Terry, I'm not sure if my rig is worth a darn. I spent more than $29 on it because I bought the pieces individually. I got it from a guy I work with that sold me the rod (an 8'6" mitchell 6/7 wt - graphite 2 pc), the reel (scientific angler concept 58), a spool of cortland fairplay backing (which i had never messed with on my previous rig since it was already spooled) and a spool of cortland floating line. I paid $50 for all of it. The best part of my fly rig when when I requested a nice case for it on my birthday last Sept. Now if I can just beef up my fly selection so it will be worth a darn in these local waters I'll be ok. Mikey

I read his article, he attached it in another message on a different thread. I guess I was having a hard time finding the y2k thread since the search won't show anything for searches with only 3 characters. and when i tried bumping it up i was always looking for y2k bug rather than y2k fly. i'll check out your link though, i appreciate it LMW. mikey

Well, after checking out the website for this model, it has some fangled chip in it that allows for backlight compoensation, so facing or not facing the sun doesn't have to be an issue. also for close ups of fish i read that in its macro mode you can actuall have the camera as close as 5 cm to the object being photographed and still be able to zoom in and what not. as far as the batteries, it came with a battery and charger. i've already told the wife we need to look into a spare battery. after all, it came with a battery case. and yea, definitely a memory card. she just doesn't understand all the mega-this and giga-splat nonsense. thanks for your help though. Maybe I'll stick to her kodak advantix camera for my trips. the old fashioned way, but still good quality. Mikey

As a winter weather nut I am envious!! Here in the river valley (fort smith, ar) we really doin't get much. the northern state gets all the pretty and we get 3 hours of slush resulting in a weeks worth of sand being dumped on the roadways. seriously i hope it doesn't get bad enough to kill power. Just pretty enough to flyfish with snow covered trees! Mikey

Wife and I went to wally world this morning to look at digital cameras. We came across an old model/display cut in price from 280 to 140. It is a Panasonic Lumix model TZ1. Here is a link to the site Lumix TZ1 It has lots of flash, so you better be on high speed. It looks like it'sgot a lot of great features, but to any photog buffs here, what should I keep in mind when taking pictures of anything outdoors? I doubt she will *knowingly* let this camera visit the white river. Here is the camera, pic from the panasonic site. Mikey

Just curious. There isn't a lot of information on the internet about the y2k fly. Everything I get is either about potential armaggedon or someone's airline flight for the year 2000. I did stumble across a site out of the UK that sells the Y2k. I also came across one from a white river area merchant. They do seem different in appearance, however I must conclude both of them are simply a stimulator. Does anyone euse either pattern of this bug? And is there a better place I might look into getting one until I can afford a fly tying kit for myself? Here is the bug from the UK order site And here is the pattern tied up at Dale's Blue Ribbon Fly Shop Anyone have pics of their own Y2K or any other info on this elusive pattern? I'm going to need some for next month. Mikey

Hey guys! (and gals) I was fumbling around iTunes and came across a video podcast called Adventures in Fly Tying. It's buy a guy from Ohio so there are a lot of flies being tied that may not necessarily be useful in our area...but the tying itself can surely help a new tyer. If you have iTunes just do a search for "Fly Fish Ohio" and you can subscribe. They do one a month so currently they have 12 in their queue. If you don't want to mess with iTunes you go to http://www.flyfishohio.com/Adventures_in_Fly_Tying.htm and check out the fly you want. Just thought this might be helpful or at least, something else to do when ya wait for that next post! Mikey p.s. No, I don't tie any flies so I definitely find this to be helpful in getting the hang of tying or at least understanding the basics.

I Plan on crimping my barbs down before I go up there. Hate being embarrassed by a fish that whoops me in the water while I'm trying to get a tiny chunk of metal from a tinier flap of skin. I reckon if any of them do get hooked too deep one can always cut their tippet, right? Mikey

As I said, I typically do catch and release. However, the fishing party I will be traveling with do plan on smoking a few stockers while we are there. He mentioned trout and eggs for breakfast. Not sure how I feel about it, but since I'm not cooking, it sounds good to me. Mikey

Okay, so am I correct in that when a trout takes a fly it is nothing like when a bass takes a plug? Where a bass will consume it, a trout is more delicate? Not pulling the fly all the way into its throat, more or less tasting it? Also, so as not to start another topic here, can someone tell me what knot they use to tie the leader to their flyline? I see the nail knot, but wonder if there is anything any easier. Currently I have the knotless insert coupled with leader that has a loop already on it. After reading nearly all of the posts I'm starting to feel a little redneck in my rig. Granted, until now it's all I knew. I never had anyone to show me how to fly fish or give me any tips pointers and tactics. I bought a rod from Sears some dozen years ago when I was around 16 and enjoyed catching bass and perch with it on local creeks. Felt the next logical step was to get another rod and use it for trout. My old rod, in case you wonder, was used by my father to stake a goose out by his pond. It was a kite that looked like a goose. Such a waste. Mikey

Patches? We don't need no stinking patches.
