Where and how do you hunt them? What does a licence cost? Record size? Mounting fees?

You have it nailed down Al. I am certainly not as articulate as you but you are saying exactly what I have been saying or at least trying to say.

WOW! A lot of info. I have been a part time fly fisherman for years but have never gotten really serious about it until recently. So I guess I am an old newbie. I agree with Michael up to a point...A person generally gets what he/she pays for but I also know there aren't that many fly line manfacturers, or at least not that I can find, so it seems to me there are several companies hawking the same lines under different name brands. For example in 10 points post above he said CV2 and GPX lines are made by SA. If they are the same line why not just buy the cheapest. I had a music store for a few years. At that time there were 3 string manfactures in the world yet there were at least 50 different name brands of strings. I know one brand of guitar strings that could be bought under one name brand for $2.50 or under another for $6.00. The only difference was in the advertising and packaging. From what I have been able to find out fly lines are marketed like guitar strings. How does a person sort out what is really good and what is just hype? Of course like snagged said line really isn't that expensive so other than my curiousoity it really doesn't matter.

ROFL Snagged. I have never heard of anyone being charged by Armodillos before. Sounds like those were probably the South American Man Killing Dillos. You are lucky cuz I never heard of anyone who survived a 'dillo stampeed. :) -
I agree with you 100% Al. We, the US, need to develop alternative energy sources and especially these new energy sources should be clean. And you are exactly right too many big businesses would lose out by doing so and unfortunatly our government is like the businesses. They arent willing to give up all the tax revenues generated from fossil fuel sales.

OK people... here it is

Signed up, and posted already. So as not to confuse myself I used my same screen name there as here. -
'cheetz: Ahhhh, I got it now! A person doesn't actually have to practice being green they just have to talk a good game. I have to give you one thing. You are right when you say I don't like people looking over my shoulder. It is especially annoying when they have no reason to do so. Yep, I went fishing. ) Caught a small Trout and 3 Suckers at Lillys. The catching wasn't all that good but the fishing was fantastic and Phils staff have got to be some of the nicest people I have ever met.

There was a study done by the MDC back in the 80's that said sucker compete directly with trout by feeding on scuds, worms, and various other kinds of bottom dwelling bugs or organic material. Makes sence to me that the trout would leave when an area is overwhelmed by suckers. Sucker Showdown at Taneycomo by William Anderson, photography by Cliff White White suckers are a bonus from this cold water fishery. Lake Taneycomo is well known for its rainbow and brown trout. It is not so well known for its white suckers. White suckers, a species native to the White River, have always lived in Lake Taneycomo, historically in moderate numbers. In the late 1980s the numbers of white suckers increased dramatically and, at times, exceeded the number of rainbow and brown trout captured during population surveys conducted by the Conservation Department. Fisheries biologists were concerned about this abrupt increase in the white sucker population. They believed that competition between white suckers and trout for invertebrate organisms that comprised the bulk of the trout diet might cause a decline in the trout fishery. Biologists went so far as to remove white suckers from the lake in an attempt to reduce their numbers. Conservation Department staff captured thousands of the fish and removed them without a detectable effect on the population. Further research indicated that while there was direct competition between white suckers and trout for food items, it was not as serious as first thought. White suckers, being indiscriminant bottom feeders, consumed a lot of filamentous algae and a number of smaller invertebrate organisms. Trout, being sight feeders, fed on larger, free swimming invertebrate organisms, primarily sow bugs and amphipods or freshwater shrimp. The numbers of white suckers in Lake Taneycomo have gradually declined in recent years and in population surveys, they are once again less abundant than trout and competition is less of a concern. The majority of suckers harvested in Missouri are taken by snagging (or grabbing) and gigging. Both methods are time-honored Ozarks traditions. Sucker grabbing is at its best in the spring when these fish move into shallow gravel areas to spawn. It is not uncommon for hundreds of suckers to congregate in a relatively small area. White suckers migrate up Roark and Bull creeks from Lake Taneycomo each spring. Because of their affinity for cold water, they make these runs earlier than other sucker species. Local residents take advantage of the early white sucker spawning run to harvest these fish prior to the later spawning migrations of the redhorse sucker species. White suckers are still abundant in Lake Taneycomo. Knowledgeable anglers can take advantage of their early spawning run for some fast and furious sucker grabbing. During the balance of the year anglers can catch these fish by pole and line using natural or prepared baits. Either method of harvest is a lot of fun and provides excellent food when the fish are properly prepared.

For Kansas you might want to add Prarie Chicken.

The things are sure a pest. As bad as digging in the yard is hitting one at 60 mph. That is an experience guarenteed to satisify a persons need for adventure. -
To hear my wife tell it that describes me perfectly.

I don't think politics should be discussed on here either. I was just joking hence the smiley icons. I am into fishing and to a limited degree hunting and trapping. OAF covers my interests pretty well. Of course an argument could be made for a sports illistated swim suit site.
-
HMMm well I was thinking to suggest politics. I mean with the bashing that goes on in politics it could be a sport... Maybe call it The Ozarks Political Colesium. What do you think.

Now JS your getting all heated up and you got me all wrong. We have had some good discussions over the past year but you still havent figured me out so I'll tell you a few things I do and dont believe in so you will better understand me. I don't mind the greeners. I am a tree hugger myself but I only support things that make sence and I believe in getting along with and playing fair with others. I drive a green car; 40+ miles per gallon, it holds 10 gallon and on average I fill it 1.5 times per month. I don't fly all over the world in jets that have no pollution controls at all on them just so I can make a few bucks and I wouldn't drive a hummer even if I could afford it. Between the emissions that come from his bus engine and from inside his bus Willey creates more pollution in a few hours than I do in a month yet, he is concidered a greener. Makes no sence to me. I believe in trees, clean water and wild life. I just believe in these things within reason. I believe that in order to be an effictive greener one would have to be very dilligent in spotting real offenders. I don't believe creating 2 tons of pollution to clean up 1 ton makes any kind of sence. I don't support 96' yachts on Taneycomo and I don't support mining gravel above 65 bridge on Taneycomo. Most of all I don't believe in or support Eco-Terrorisim in any form or fasion. I'll finish this post up with a question. Do you think more pollution comes from the emmissions produced by cars or from the businesses that build, paint, make tires, freon, parts, transport, sell and repair them? By the way have you caught any fish latley? I plan on going tomorrow.

LOL cheetz. You been hanging around with Willey?

JS: Fat, dumb and happy huh. Glad you're the one who said it and not me. Here is an 'informative' article you might find interesting. Just out on Reuters today. In light of some of your previous statements I have underlined a couple of parts you should find particullarly interesting. Honda unveils diesel system to rival gasoline cars By Chang-Ran Kim, Asia auto correspondent Reuters Sunday, September 24, 2006; 1:12 PM HAGA-GUN, Japan (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor Co. (7267.T) has done it again. The car maker that floored the world in the 1970s with the first gasoline engine to meet U.S. clean air guidelines without a catalytic converter said it has developed a new and simple diesel powertrain that is as clean as gasoline-fuelled cars. The technology marks a big step forward for Honda at a time when rivals are racing to come up with ways to clear the world's strictest emissions regulations, called Tier II Bin 5, that the United States will usher in next year. Diesel engines, which now power half of Europe's new cars, are slowly gaining traction with fuel-conscious consumers around the world since they typically get 30 percent better mileage than gasoline cars. Their weakness has been the higher exhaust levels of nitrogen oxide (NOx), a greenhouse gas. Honda said on Monday its new diesel drivetrain features a unique method that generates and stores ammonia within a two-layer catalytic converter to turn nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen.

I would think allowing some removal of suckers would be a good thing. Although I am not sure what the best method would be.

There are no two ways about that a larger vehicle does make a person feel safer. I have driven 'green cars' for several years but I sure felt safer back in the day when I used to drive full sized vehicles.
-
I couldnt agree more Phil. As long as money, politics or extremisim is driving the issues they arent going to be honestly addressed. JS. You forgot to mention that most Europenan countries are quiet small as compared to the US so they dont drive nearly as much. You also forgot to mention that most EU countries fund their old age retirememt systems through fuel tax. They don't have FICA taxes coming out of their pay checks. Once again it is money and politics not enviromental concern that makes it that way.

From what I hear getting pictures of lightning can be very difficult if not nearly impossible. Probably just have to keep trying. JMO

JS: As you know my point was never really about wolves attacking people: it was that there is a universal law that says for everything positive there is a negative. The point I was trying to make was there has to be and is a middle ground. The introduction or re-introduction of large predators without properly educating people how to deal with them is very risky business. Allowing fires to burn un-abated because all of the damage is good for the enviroment is not a good policy either. The good has to be equally weighed against the bad and then appropiate action taken. Like Ron said there is no middle ground with the greeners. For them it is all "my way or the highway." Last I checked there was nothing wrong with a little bit of compramise.

One way or the other I will be fishing Monday.

Yep, they are sure dropping out fast. As it is down to 4 are we still on or should it be postponed for another date? Other than myself and you who is on the list for sure? Gone

I never heard of it so my opinion wouldnt be worth much but, I think if the truth were known fishing back in the cowboy days would be much different than we know it today. JMTC
