  1. Fishing was very good yesterday, probably landed 30+ fish in 5 hrs, almost all of them on a beetle, stimulator, hopper or a chamois worm, most were on top. Had 2 over 17" one that would have went 20" or better, didnt' get him all the way in Water has returned to normal, good flow and all the mud has washed out mud that was created when the conservation did some stream work mon, and tuesday. Good fishing, so if you want to fish dries, now is a good time to come over. I didn't have much trouble finding a hole to myself, most of the time I could only see one or two other people fishing, I spent the whole 5hrs in zone 2, started at the bottom by the dam and finished up by the hadi-cap dock Oh by the way, anybody thinking about buying a Hardy Angel, fly rod, don't. I just broke mine again yesterday, the 6th time in 3 years, the rod is junk, it does cast nice but it is very expensive and not worth the hassle, I get tired of sending it back twice a year.
  2. You can use the 4lb invisix fluorocarbon but you'll do better with 2lb, the 4lb will not let the smaller lures sink naturaly, and will not cast small jigs eaisly. If all you are using is spinners, crankbaits and spoon type lures you can probably get by with 4lb, but 2lb will work better, so get 2lb if you can, you'll catch more fish.
  3. Excuse me, I meant to say I like 6X for most of my nymph fishing.
  4. I normaly use a 9' leader, longer sometimes when the water is low and clear. I use 5X (4lb) fluorocarbon for buggers, bigger nymphs, and streamers all the time. seaguar is great stuff, I use it all the time, I use it for my fly fishing as tippet material quite often. I don't like using heaiver 6X for my nymphs, the 4lb is to heavy for most of what I do here at the park. I use 7X most of the time on stuff #14 and smaller.
  5. Here is the link, good reading, it explains a few things. http://www.cassville-democrat.com/blogs/1239/
  6. They are still digging some in the park, but it is all supposed to be done by wed. They are digging only in zone 2 right now. Water is clear and dropping a bit everyday, we still have really good flows, the river is usually a lot lower in july than it is right now. The fish are healthy and fighting hard right now. With the clearer water, it is very important to use a good 2 or 3 lb line. I see people everyday with 4 or 6 or sometimes heaiver line that have been fishing for 2 or 3 days and and have onl caught 1 or 2 trout, we put new 2lb line on for them, make sure they are rigged right, and most come back with stories of limits and the ones that got away. light line is very important right now. Dry fly fishing is really good right now, still doing well on beetles, ants, hoppers, cracklebacks, griffiths gnats, elk hair caddis, blue wing olives, and we are still getting a good trico hatch each morning. Nymphs to use right now would be a pheasant tail, burlap, sow bug or a scud, brassies, copper john, hares ear, all these in # 16's or #18's. Zebra midges, are good as droppers, #20's and smaller, and micro eggs also work well now as a dropper or if you are sight fishing. Glo-ball, san juan worms, thread jigs and grubs are working well also, we fish these under an indiacator most times. 9' leaders are a best right now, unless you are fishing a fly rod that is 6' or shorter, use a 9' leader. Micro jigs, marabou jigs, and the tinsel jigs are all working well right now, we are doing best on black/yellow, olive, white, brown, and black/olive. Roostertails are good early and late, the best colors have been black, skunk, frog green, dk. brown, and brown/yellow. Power eggs are still the way to go if you just want a quick limit, white, hatch brown and orange eggs have been working the best. If you are using plastic worms, then the cheese yellow, white, flo. orange and the pink have all been working well. Now if you are going into Zone 3, minnows, nightcrawlers, corn, and powerbait paste is a good choice, these are good producers. Good luck, see ya on the water. Tim's Fly Shop
  7. I see snake catchers down there sometimes, the snakes they have are always alive. there is one guy down there who told me he was milking the venom out of the snakes to make anti-venom, told me there was a good money in snakes. they have a lot of them to choose from down there.
  8. I'll PM you later with that info.
  9. I have sold one or two of those, I don't keep them in the shop, but can get one when you need one. They are nice, one of the first good reels I had was a Marryat, had it maybe 25 years ago, but I traded it and have never owned another.
  10. Well the water is still in great shape, the dry fly fishing is better than ever, good caddis hatches in the afternoon, the B.W.O's are still comming off strong and the trico hatch in the mornings is as good as ever. The conservation dept. did a little work the first of the week(should be done by wed.) replacing a baffle with chunk rock, this murkyed the water a bit, but with the strong flow we have right now, the water will clear quickly. The water is still very clear, so use 7X or 6X tippet right now on your fly rods, and 2 or 3 lb line on your spinning outfits. Nymphs are working well, the pheasant tails, and the sow bugs worked very well this week, the copper johns, small brassies and burlaps did well also. Glo-balls, san juan worms, and thread jigs have been good all week. Good dries other than those mentioned earlier, are beetles, ants, hoppers, stimulators, and humpys. Fishing plastic worms, then the cheese yellow, pink, and the orange have been the best colors. If you are using the eggs, then orange, white, and hatch brown have been best. Roostertails this week were the skunk, black, brown and the frog green. Spoons are working better than ever, gold, copper, and brown trout were good spoons, there were some good fish caught this week on spoons, 2 that I saw were a good 3 lbs each. Marabou jigs are working great as usual, black/yellow, olive, brown, white and tan are best right now, in the micro jigs, it has been the sculpin, olive/gold head, tan, white, and the brown/orange. In zone 3 powerbait paste in yellow, or rainbow seemed to be good this week, but nightcrawles and corn were catching fish all week also, according to reports from some of my customers, one little girl, she was maybe 10 years old, had a 3 lb rainbow she caught on nightcrawler, right below the old dam. 11. everything was 30% off yesterday, but you had to pay in cash
  12. for less people, go to the conservation parking lot just south of the park boundry. Walk to the river and fish all day, probably never see another person. Maybe a fisherman and maybe a swimmer but not very many people. I fished that area about 2 weeks ago, caught 8, nothing big, but never saw a soul. Fish buggers, and bigger streamers in that area, the water is flowing well, so weight whaterver you are using. I don't see much dry fly action in this area, but you might try a hopper or a beetle. I do well on san juans and glo-bugs below the park. Good luck
  13. The work has not started yet, but the crane is in postion, ready to go.
  14. Steve, I think you are right, the DNR is going to put the pit toilet in. I wish it was already done, one has been needed for a long time.
  15. Steve, Jerry at the hatchery told me it was going to be constructed just like the rest of the baffles. I told him to tell them to build it hight enough to hlold some water back. I also told them to look at that hole in front of the lodge, see if they could put more rock in there and try to build it as high as it used to be before they worked on it last winter.
  16. Just thought everybody would like to know, the conservation dept. will be removing a log baffle up by the hatchery and replacing it with chunk rock, starting today, hatchery manager told me this should only be a two day ordeal, maybe one day. Of course while the digging is going on, the river will be muddied up some. As soon as the digging is over it should clear quickly. After the log baffle is replaced, the digging crew will be going down to the S curve(copper head bend) and will be removing the gravel that was deposited there this spring by our floods, so this shouldn't be a real problem, but with gas prices and all I thought you all should know about what is going on. I was told that them might do some digging next week, but not sure where. I'll let you all know as soon as I hear something
  17. Took a few hrs out yesterday in the rain and fished the C&R area at the park, the fishing was great, caught a few on a hopper, and 2 on a beetle, and a whole bunch on eggs and san juan worms, and a few on a ginger bugger, the river is in great shape, this 15" rainbow was the biggest I landed yesterday, but I did see a couple that were bigger, hooked a nice 3 or 4 lb rainbow on an egg, but didn't land him, anyway here are a couple of pics that show the condtion of the C&R area. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P7100055.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P7100054.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P7100053.jpg
  18. Map 5, The old dam is right at the end of the map.
  19. Zone 3 is right at the end of zone 2, so yes you can walk there or drive. There are two roads that take you into zone 3 or you can get there by parking at the old broken down dam, this divides zones 3 and zone 2. Not sure which map it is on I think it is #4 but it could be #5, but I belive the dam is marked on the map.
  20. Crane is looking good. It is still a bit high, but not to high to fish. We are supposed to get more rain wed. and thursday. Hopefully we won't get much, but you never know. I hope your trip goes well. I might see ya on crane, I fish it alot on wed, and thur. Good luck.
  21. The river is still in fine shape, it is getting very clear, it cleared up a lot on friday and saturday. Still great dry fly fishing, adams, blue wing olives, caddis, midges and lots of beetles and ants. Stimulators, renegades, bigger humpys and royal wulffs are still working great. Nymph fishing is still the best way to catch #'s of fish all day, the pheasant tail, burlap sow bugs, copper johns and zebra midges are working well all day long, hares ears, prince nymphs, and brassies are also working well. We have not had much rain over our way the past few weeks, there have been some showers but nothing to mess the river up. If you are fishing marabou jigs, olive, black/yellow, white, cream, and tan colors are all working. Crankbaits, spoons, and small spinners are working well, the gold spoons, the crawdad crankbaits and spinners in a black, olive, or brown have all been working well. Plastic baits will catch a lot of fish right now, if you are fishing worms, then cheese yellow, orange, white and pink have all been working. If you are using eggs, then hatch brown, white, and orange have been the best colors. Lots of people are fishing in zone 3, nightcrawlers, corn and white powerbait has been working well. With the clearing water, it is very important to use 2 or 3 pound fishing line right now, no heavier than 4lb and only use the 4lb if you can't see the 2 or 3 pound. don't use a blue, clear/blue, or white fishing line, use a line that is ultragreen, fluorocarbon, or a light brown color, good luck, this week. 22. well just like a longer rod, the timing is very important. A short rod like the 5' 3wt is pretty quick, even for a 3wt. I can get a good 45 feet out of most of my little rods, I have a 6' 5wt that I can get 60 feet out of, but you must keep your rod tip up high to keep it out of the grass behind you.
  23. A 5' 3wt is a bit small but it fit the type of fishing I was doing, when the water is normal to low, it is all you need at the parks, unless you are cork fishing and roll casting a lot. I have caught a lot of 5 to 10 pound trout on rods like the 5' 3wt, it handles them just fine, in normal to low water. I guess it is all I need, it is more of my crane creek rod, it is nice in small areas like crane creek.
  24. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P7020047.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P7020049.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=P7020051.jpg Started off my day at the park working with a 6 year old boy named Bear. We started by the hatchery, easy pickings for a beginning angler. He hooked a fish and landed it by himself, which I thought was pretty good considering his age, he missed a bunch of fish and he had few others on that didn't quite make it in, his hook set is still a bit slow Heck he is only six. So after 3 hrs he got tired and the family went up to their cabin to eat. The water looked great, full of fish and they were hungry, I caught several nice fish on a black beetle, I caugh 4 trout on a #18 glo-ball, 9 trout I caught on a copy of the hatchery pellets I tie, it is very effective when the guys are feeding fish in the hatchery or sweeping a pool. Just as I left I put the always effective #20 black zebra midge on, and landed 5 in about 20 casts, and it was straight up noon, those fish can't tell time, everybody tells me they won't bite when the sun is high Oh well it was a nice day on the creek, water is still a bit murky, but you can see maybe 8 feet in the slow water and 3 feet in the faster water,up by the hatchery in places you can see the entire bottom, you know places where there is not much current. 6X fluorocarbon was the ticket for me today, and I used my 5' 3wt fly rod, it was a hoot, see ya on the river.
  25. yeh but it is looking better, should be fishable again in a few days maybe another week
