There were a lot of people down, christmas break and all that stuff, and everyone enjoying a nice weekend, brrr it is cold this morning. Those little eggs did well for several guys, I sold a bunch of those little apricot fur bugs, and they work as well or better than an egg sometimes. Haven't tried a G-bug down here much, but the WD-40 is a good fly anywhere, I like mine tied a light brown for the park, or sometimes olive, both produce well for me. A black zebra midge did well all weekend, and the dry fly fishing was good everyday, lots of caddis on friday, and B.W.O's, saw caddis and midges on sat, and sunday and monday, didn't see much activity on top, but the fish were still hitting my adams and my B.W.O's, it was so windy yesterday afternoon you had to plan your casts between wind gusts, and the leaves, you would have thought all the leaves would have been gone by now.

The fishing was great this weekend, lots of good fish, dry fly fishing was good all weekend, I managed to catch a few real nice fish, 17" and 18" rainbows on adams and blue wing olives, but the fish today really seemed to be egg crazy, I had a couple over 4lbs that took the egg as soon as it hit the water, and several that took it so hard they hooked themselves, they were very aggressive this afternoon, here are a couple of 4lb trout I caught this afternoon, both on a #16 egg. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=PC310031.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=PC310030.jpg

Yeh Phil, I saw the picture that day, it was caught in the first hole up by the hatchery, on a black/yellow jig, it was up towards the top of the pool, under a canopy of leaves, it sure is a nice fish, looks like 9lb or better. There are few in there like that right now, if we ever get some more rain and the spring rises, there will be a few more come out.

Merry Christmas, to one and all, hope you had a great year and next year is even better. (Go Trout)

That is a good day, purple is a good color. Today was good, I didn't catch anything big, but saw a few pics of some 4 and 5lb fish. Saw a pic of one fish, caught up near the hatchery that was a good 8 or 9 lbs, mabybe bigger, good looking male. I was told it was caught on a black/yellow jig.

I was down at the river today, it looks great, still a good flow and tons of fish. I fished below the park today, started a Priors' ford and fished up to the bridge below Muncy. Nothing big, 4 nice little 11" browns and a bow about 15" and anohter about 14" caught em all on a black bugger, #10 size 1/8th tungsten head, and a little flash in the tail.

I noticed the track hoe is at the park, that can only mean more stream work. So I contacted Jerry, the supervisor of the hatchery, and asked him what they had in the works, here is his answer: Hi Tim-- You ask about the track-hoe. We are replacing several of thelogs with rock low water dams. The slurried concrete on the bank in a number of the areas will also be taken up. We are also installing a lowwater dam at the junction of the C&R area and the artificial area. The work is from Dry Hollow upstream. There may be a small amount of work done on Mondays. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will not be disturbed. I'm not sure if they will start before the holidays. So this will probably not effect fishing much, but I thought those that come down a lot in the winter would want to know.

from Billings to Monett, the road was in great shape, this was at 6:00 a.m.

It started out well this morning, but I missed two nice fish, but did manage this one, I'm going back for more this afternoon. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=PC150058.jpg

Had a great day at the park, this is the best fish I had today http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=PC140007.jpg I had two that were 6lbs, two that were 5 lbs, 1 4 1/2 lb and several 3 lb fish today, caught several on a pine squirrel fly tan tail, chartruse body. Caught one of the 5lb on a Y2K bug, caught one of the 6lb on a purple san juan worm, and caught the other on a Y2K bug. It was good to have Steve Smith there, he was nice enough to take the pic, he griped about doing it, but he did it anyway, he was cold and needed to get warmed up http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=PC140005.jpg Anyway the water is in great shape, clearing a little, it is mostly clear, with lots of current, good nymphing right now.

Here is some pics of the falls yesterday, the river was up about 18" more, still not flooded, it is in great shape, the fish seemed to be very active. The water is probably up about 30" total, we had almost 5" down here, or that is what was in my gauge. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...unningdec11.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...nt=PC110050.jpg Fishing should be really good this friday.

I have used #10 and smaller bombers here at the park in years gone by, I used to tie one with spun carabou body and brown hackle and a brown hackle tail and it did catch fish in the summer, I always figured they hit it for a hopper.

I think we are going to be spared this go around, it is 41 here right now and is not supposed to get any worse here, looks like we will just get rain. We need the water, the river really looked great today. Here is a pic of the river this morning. http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...rent=water2.jpg http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u294/ti...rent=water1.jpg

The water came up about 18" from sunday, it is greenish and running nice, both falls were open a bit today. The extra water really made the fish active, there were only two of us on the river at 9:00. I caught a couple of 18" rainbows, went back to the shop for awhile, came back and caught a 4lb, and a 5lb rainbow right in front of the lodge, and figured that was a good day. I came back home and have been tying the rest of the day. The river should be in great shape come friday, we had really been needing some more water in the river. Caught both good fish on a red san juan worm, I caught the two 18" fish early on a Dk Green woolybugger.

Sorry Don, that is not the box.
-
No not really ever to bad to go fishing, I just got 2 over 18" and I am just soaked to the bone, I'm in the office trying to dry off, but it was worth getting wet to catch a couple of nice fish, I'll be back as soon as I close the shop and rain or shine, or ice I'm going back and try to catch one or two more. Don't cancel your trip, fish when you can, and the fish will be there waiting, heck they don't mind the rain, why should we

Roads are good from Billings to Roaring River, I drove down this morning(sun) about 6 a.m. I'm going fishing, see ya.

it is a nice box with a lot of flies in it. I hope someone who reads this forum will know who lost the box or will be the one that lost the box, they need to go home. They miss there owner

Yes what wore out on the shimano reels.? Parts for the shimano reels are easy to come by, unless they are real old. I have 6 or 7 of them and they are tough, I"m still putting line on some I sold over 20 years ago. I like shimano, I think for the money they are one of the best.
-
I had a fly box turned in that has a lot of flies in it, it was lost yesterday, Friday the 7th of dec. describe box and some of the flies in it and I'll hold it for you till you are down next.

I've never used any of those in the winter, but you never know, give em a try and tell us if they work, I have caught brown trout on mice in the summer, very small #10 mice patterns. I caught a 9lb brown on a mouse pattern about 20 years ago. Try them and let us know if they work.
-
I caught the brook trout about 10 years ago. The guys were taking browns out of the park as of a few years ago. I think they quit trasporting fish about the time the limit went to 4

Midges nearly everyday here at Roaring River, and the small black cadddis are hatching off everyday right now, and they will most of the winter, I have been catching a lot of fish on Beetles and ants all fall and this winter. I fish a lot more streamers in the winter and glo-balls. Those trout on the tailwaters and on springcreeks can't seem to get enough eggs.

I know some guys from the Neosho area that used to take fish and put them in there own spring, I remember one time they told me their spring branch dumped into hickory creek. They fished alot and took limits several times a week back to there spring branch, I would think during higer water times some could have escaped, I know they took a few browns with them, for several years there was not a length limit on browns, at roaring river, and you could take five home if you could catch them. So maybe some showed up from there. It was just like that Brook trout I caught a few years ago at Roaring river. Nice brook trout, but where did it come from, the nearest brook trout at the time were at Beaver Dam.
