  7. Improving hunting safety increasingly difficult The “low-hanging fruit” was plucked in early – and highly successful – efforts to reduce the number of firearms-related hunting accidents. JEFFERSON CITY—Hunter-education instructors have tough jobs. The more they succeed, the harder their job becomes. “We have come such a long way in the past 20 years, it hardly leaves us anywhere to go,” said Tony Legg, hunter education coordinator for the Missouri Department of Conservation. Legg notes that in the bad old days of hunting safety, Missouri routinely recorded more firearms deer-hunting accidents in one day than occur now over the entire season. “The worst year was 1986,” said Legg. “We had 26 accidents that year, including one fatality. There were 10 accidents just on the opening weekend.” A big part of the reason for the large number of deer-hunting accidents that year was sheer numbers of both deer and hunters. Missouri’s firearms deer harvest topped 100,000 for the first time in 1986, and approximately 400,000 hunters took advantage of the growing deer herd. Responding to the challenge of making hunting safer, the Conservation Commission made hunter education mandatory in 1988, requiring anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1967, to complete an approved safety and ethics course before buying a hunting permit. The results have been spectacular. From 1980 through 1989, Missouri averaged 16.8 firearm-related deer hunting accidents per season. Over the past 10 years, the average has been 8.6. Last year Missouri recorded just four firearms-related deer hunting accidents, none fatal. " The contrast is even more striking when you consider that Missouri had a nine-day firearms deer hunting season in 1986 and hunters killed 103,000 deer. Last year firearms deer hunting, including the muzzleloader season, spanned 36 days, and the harvest topped 260,000. “I certainly appreciate the difference between a sprained ankle and a gunshot wound,” said Legg, but the fact remains that more than 400,000 hunters spent millions of hours hunting deer in Missouri last year with only four gun-related accidents. That is a remarkable safety record. Three out of last year’s four deer hunting accidents involved self-inflicted gunshots. Such accidents frequently happen when firearms are being loaded or unloaded or when people bring loaded firearms into vehicles. Firearms with exposed hammers are involved in a large portion of self-inflicted injuries because they catch on clothing or other items and fall on the firing pin, causing unintentional discharges. Nearly all these accidents could be prevented by ensuring that firearms are always pointed in a safe direction. -Jim Low- This was a press release that Jim Low put out on Friday Oct 16th, but his facts are not currect there actually was a FATALITY last year during the muzzleloader season in fact it was my BROTHER IN-LAW. I did edit out the advertising for a local man in this article because I don't feel he or the MDC deserve the free plug.

  10. I found this on Feather Crafters Website www.feather-craft.com Ed Story, my dad, passed away on Monday, August 4th. Ed was a U.S. Army veteran, owner and founder of Feather-Craft Fly Fishing, teacher and friend to many. Ed created the F-C Crackleback Dry Woolly and dozens of other world famous fresh and saltwater fly patterns. Everyone who met Ed would quickly consider him a friend. If you happened to run into him walking through our St. Louis storefront, he'd smile, shake your hand and ask, "How can I help?" Chances are ten minutes later he had you on the casting yard or at the tying bench giving you a personal lesson. He had a dynamic personality and a boundless energy for spreading the joy of fly fishing. His energy was also felt by thousands of his customers/friends that he advised and mentored over the F-C phone lines for over three decades. He loved teaching and talking about fly fishing almost as much as he loved doing it. My dad and I have been best friends and business partners since I was twelve years old; working side by side the past 28 years we never had one argument. He was loaded with wisdom that applied to both business and life. "Be nice to everybody" was his favorite advice to give, and exactly the way he lived his life. When he began handing me the reigns to the family business almost a decade ago, he knew that he had instilled in me his commitment, compassion, spirit and enthusiasm for fly fishing, and for Feather-Craft. All of us here at Feather-Craft will miss Ed terribly, but we will continue on with the highest level of service and commitment to our customers and to our sport, just as he wanted. The Story family has initiated the "Ed Story Memorial Fund" that will benefit a restoration project on one of Ed's favorite Missouri trout streams. Our hope is to spearhead a significant project that can be dedicated in his memory. Any donations can be sent to: Ed Story Memorial Fund c/o Feather-Craft PO Box 19904 St. Louis, MO 63144 Sincerely, Bob Story

I haven't been down there on the weekends I tend to go down during the week but I will say this it is a real nice place to find some fat stream raised trout.

  15. I was just down at Montauk last weekend and the water was a little off color but only because it rained every other day. I had my best luck in the morning drifting scuds through the riffles and woolly buggers laters in the day. I only made it outside the park saturday evening and did real well running 1/100 thread jigs about 3ft deep through the hole outside the park, but I wish I had some BIG chernobyl ants to run dropers off as soon as the sun started going down I just couldn't keep the fish off my indicator that I was using. The stream is in very good shape lost of down trees to hold lots of big fish, it is wadeable
  16. Ah I remeber catching those clawed mudbugs growing up in the county, we just took a window screen out ( I hope my mom doesn't read this) and would remove it from the frame and fold it in half and staple the three open ends closed but would leave a little hole in the front and would just throw it in the stream with bacon in it.
  17. Has anyone used Bass Pro Shops Finley River Waders, yesterday I went shopping with my fience' for my five anneversery gift for myself and since my recent car accident I have been in physical therapy for a back injury and I decided I would try using stocking foot wader to take some of the presure off my back and after spending $160 dollers on a pair of good polorized sunglasses she said my limit was $200 I decided to do some looking around and found the Finley River stocking foot waders that were only like $50 dollers at BPS in St Louis. I was wonder if anyone has used them, they have been getting good reviews on there website but I don't trust there reviewers because I wonder how many work for BPS. Let me know what you guys and gals think.
