  1. I support stem cell research. There is more to it than what the media portrays and the way the general public sees it. It is more than just replicating a human body. They are using the stem cells to combat diesease. It could ultimately lead to a cure for alzheimers. I understand that a lot of people are against it from an ethical standpoint but it would be a huge step towards curing many dieseases including cancer. Maybe my opinion is skewed because I have my degree in Biology, but it is science. and it is not something that should be regulated by the gov. for what its worth, my $.02
  2. keepin my mouth shut
  3. i think that he was refering to some jewelry the fish was wearing
  4. jan 16th 2007
  5. Ill go if you come to Durango and get me hahaha. Well i wish i could go anyway. It sucks not being able to fish
  6. Hook: TMC 200R BL is preferred, but a TMC 3761 can be used also. #18-22 Thread: UNI Thread 8/0 Color to match the Natural. In this case it is black, but chocolate and olive work also. Shuck: White Antron. Only use a few fibers. You dont want the shuck to be huge. You can use White Polypro yarn or z lon also. Rib: Small Copper wire. 5-6 turns. 4 turns on the smaller sizes. Abdomen:Built up thread taper down to hook eye. Wing Case: Same as the Shuck. When you Tie this fly, Start the thread a hook gape length behind the eye of the hook. this will also act as your stopping point for the end of your ribbing wraps as well as the tie in point for the wing case. when you tie in the wing case, you should use half of the width of the antron fibers. taper the head down to just in front of the eye of the hook and fold the wing case over the thread making sure that it is on top of the fly. Use 3 tight wraps of thread to hold in place. Divide the remaining antron in half and bend back to the sides of the fly forming the gills/exposed wings of the midge. wrap 5 more wraps of thread to hold them in place and whip finish. coat with head cement if need be.......(you shouldnt have to if your whip finish is good enough) You can also coat the thorax of the fly with head cement to give it a glossy finish if you want. In fishing this fly, for all of you indicator fisherman out there, you can fish with weight or without it. since it is an emerging pattern, i prefer to sight fish it without weight. On the San Juan however, especially on in the Texas Hole, you need to get it down in the water so we use 2 #4 shot a foot above the fly fishing with 6x. at home, you can get away with throwing one or 2 #6 shot about 5 feet under an indicator. You can also use it as the last fly in a 2 fly rig. Tight lines Randy
  7. thats what a fishin hat is for!!!! you should see mine hahaha
  8. I use wool. Especially if you hadnds get wet, they still will keep your hands nice and toasty. fingerless. you can pick them up at bps for like 5 bucks
  9. in the orvis catalog, there is a foam indicator beetle with rubber legs that works well.
  10. no worries...i wanted to have them by this friday so it will be alright. I should have an influx of them today because of yesterday being no mail. cant wait to get them out to everyone. its almost like Christmas because im getting "presents" every day. hahaha
  11. I meant the boga grip for fish of larger size such as 5 lbs and above not for dinks. They are safe for trout. if you do happen to catch a world record fish, the sale is igfa certified. You have to send it in with the line for the line class also so they can make judgement, but yes they are worth the money. If you didnt want to put it in the fishes mouth, you can attach it to your net and hold the fish in the net to weigh it, just subtract the weight of the net to get an accurate reading (if you use it just for that purpose, then you are spending quite a bit for a scale). I have used one and i would recommend them to use.
  12. Even inline, holding a trout by the jaw can damage the fish. Using a boga grip is also an option. Especially for larger fish. Trout dont have a thick jaw bone that is strong enough to support the weight so you could easily break their jaw.
  13. Everyone who owns a fly rod should own a lamson reel to go on it. Even though i just had to order a new clutch for my velocity, (it was my fault it broke), Their customer service is the best of any fly fishing company that ive ever had experiecne with. Not only do they make one of a kind reels.....they incorporate mountain bike tecnology, but I just told the lady that i needed a new clutch and she replied, ok a new one is in the mail as we speak. No questions asked. Thats the kind of service that everyone should get. Go LAMSON!!! Just my $.02 Randy
  14. to help prevent the spread, make sure you soak your boots and waders, in a pretty concentrated solution of FORMULA 409 and water. BLEACH DOESNT WORK TO KILL THE SPORES!!!!!!!
  15. Sorry for the lack of posts this last week. My boss got married on saturday and i was helping out with that...i did get some fishing in...hahaha... and with some of the best anglers in the nation. ie, the entire Flyfishing team USA that is going to finland in june. the highlight was deffinitely fishing with Lance Egan who invented the rainbow warrior. ill post some pictures of that later. I have recieved 6 sets of flies in the mail. i dont know them right off the top of my head but you probably know who you are. I know i have Tims and steves, lukes, johns for sure. keep em comin. the animas is raging at 8000 cfs....that is huge considering that last thursday it was at 550 cfs. we got hit with rain and it hasnt stopped in 5 days. so no more practicing for me till fresno. catch some big ones randy
  16. I also agree. I think that a large part of the problem was this spring when they didnt run water for like 3 months or how ever long it was. if you can remember back that far, think of all the moss and other crap on the bottom thatturned the bottom a yellow color. (there is a difference in weed beds and the algal crap that was present) It pretty much suffocated the scuds and sow bugs. In order for them to survive, they need to have fresh clean water that is constantly moving. They didnt have that for quite a while. When i came back in june for a week and fished, i didnt see a single scud. Thats just my $.02. Jim--glad you and rod and jason had a great day.
  17. i would prefer that you didnt tape them to the card. if you have to just put them in the envelope or whatever you are sending them. just dont tape them. i added one more person matt keener. I hadnt checked my pms sorry if it is an inconvienience. that is the last person that is in the swap making it 18. for those of you that just sent 18 flies, if there are extras needed, i will tie them with the recipies that you provided. thank you
  18. the whacter nets are awesome. I found out about them at show. rubber is the only way to go.
  19. I really appreciate your promptness on getting these flies to me....i will do the same when i get them and send them out. I would also really appreciate it if you all did stamp your own envelopes. that would save me some time.
  20. quick and easy....you need to get a long handled rubber bagged net. the hooks of the plugs wont get caught in the net and it doesnt do damage to the fish.
  21. I would say since there are 17 people, just round it up and send 20. To make it even. When you complete the flies, send them with your name on a business card or a 3x5 with your recipie and the name of the fly. also include a return mailer with your name on it. Send a dollar or 2 what ever you see fit to help me with mailing expenses. Lets try to get these flys done and mailed by the 13th. I would like to mail them out before I go to fresno. my address is Randy Hanner 1340 CR 250 Durango, CO 81301 Your promptness will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, just ask me or anyone else who participated in fly swap 1. If you can get your flys in the mail before the 13th that would be even better.
  22. the swap is closed. we will go with the amount of people we have...i have been guiding for the last few days so i havent been on. but i will accept fly smallie and the caddis
  23. Man I sure am GLAD that im not missing out on much....especially all those suckers. HAHAHAHA.... Hey michael...i forgot to ask how you liked the Hard Alox reels. The HALS 2 that i have been fishing since the FFR is freakin amazing
  24. in my professional opinion.......I Have had alot of success by throwing the same patterns in bigger sizes. like for scuds instead or throwing sizes 16, 18, and 20....throw them in sizes 10, 12, 14. and midges in size 14 and 16. I have even thrown a scud in size 6 and had awesome fishing with one generator running. Find the seams and fish them. The fish want to use as little energy as possible.
  25. I know its a midge theme, but if you know how to tie, then you know how to tie a midge...if you have to, take some black or olive or brown thread.....and wrap a hook with threa tie in a pieve of krystal flash, build up a head and bring the flash over it and tie it off. its that simple....i dont want people to quit this thing beause the missed the theme. Midges are not that hard to tie.
