Catch some big browns for me this year I might catch the tail end of the run Tight lines, Randy
  13. The biggest problem that I find with clients, is that they dont listen. Or they compare places such as the Animas (where i guide) to the green or the yellowstone or the missouri. "Well we did this on the Madison and used these flies and we caught 50 fish in one day!!!" My reply in my head is "does this look like the freakin Madison? No this is the Animas and we are in Colorado not Montana!" I tell them how to fish and demonstrate a couple drifts to show them what i want them to do! and if they dont listen then they dont catch fish its as simple as that! Well said Ron. The best day ive had on the water guiding this year was in late June. The guy was from Colorado Springs. If anyone here knows Durango at all then they know that the Animas runs right through town and the Gold Medal Water (equalivalant to our Blue Ribbon) starts right in the Middle of town and goes to the end of town. I took him right behind our water treatment plant. I had him set up with a hopper dropper...noble chernobyl and a phesant tail. As soon as we got to the water, we saw a fish rise. we stood there and watched him rise two more times and i told him if he rises again, im going to change your fly to a single midge dry. sure enough the fish did and on his first cast hooked and landed a 20 in rainbow. we covered a total of about 100yds of stream and the pmd's started coming off just as i knew they would. about 10:30. I moved him to a hole up stream and positioned him on a rock down stream of the fish. I stood on the top of the hill and directed him to cast to the rising fish that i saw. (on the animas a good day is 4-5 fish whether you have a guide or not. if you catch more than 4 in a full day you have had an excllent day) My client hooked 20 fish and brought 12 to net. After each fish, i would run down the hill, land it, and then run back up the hill to spot more fish. It paid off because at the end of the HALF day trip i got a brand new $100 bill. People who listen to what the guide has to say, make it more enjoyable for the guide also. It makes the guide WANT to work for you. People who dont listen to what the guide has to say, make the guide sluggish. If you think you know it all, then you shouldnt hire a guide. Save his time and money because you are gonna make it hell on the guide if you dont and he wont want to work for you. Don--we get local guys all the time that just want to hire a guide for a day and get back and fish. most of the tiem well give em a little discount. We have one guy who hires us once a month just to go out and fish. He and his wife both are avid fisherman and even own water on the pine. most importantly hire a guide if you want to learn. Dont go in expecting to catch alot of fish, unless the guide says that you should expect it. just my opinion from my first year experience. randy
  14. yeah....The La Platas Already have snow. Its been down in the 30's at night already out here. River is blown out again beacuse we got the remanants of Hurricane John in Baja. I wont be able to make it up there that weekend. Girlfriend is coming out to visit....dont think that she would like me to drive to denver...hahaha. have a good trip out. One of these days, you and kristina will have to make a trip down my way. Ill take you to the pine.
  15. Michael.... I cant wait to get back and start fishing at night with you again. I will be back in town the first or second week of November. Id like to come back sooner, but I have the Trial in Fresno. Brian thinks that I will do pretty well and qualify for the nationals newxt october in boulder. The blood red has been killing fish out here dead drifted under a hopper. I have a new streamer to show you, in fact I might mail you a few to try out. I think youll like it. Randy
  16. send it back to the manufacturer. or take it to a local fly shop and the should be able to do it for you, other than that, youll have to do it yourself.
  17. First off...that fish looks fine to me. second of all, whirling diesease affects younger trout. they would see it in the hatchery first. the fish infected with WD would look like they have a broken back. and they would be swimming in circles.
  18. If you want the best, go with Rio. The Orvis line is crap. I got it when i started guiding in durango for my client rods. I threw it away after 10 uses. It doesnt cast like other lines. even the zero gravity rod cant throw that line. So i switched to Rio. I have used Sci Angler in the past and the GPX line is really good too. BUt after using rio, especially rio grand, i wont switch to any other line. the xxd line by sci angler is pretty good too. i have it on my 8 wt. like ive said before, take the advice from the people who use the stuff everyday. not just the weekend warrior. If you want the best, you are gonna have to pay the price. you wont pay any more than 60 bucks for a top of the line fly line unless you get into specialty lines.
  19. If you are using a 9ft 6x leader, you need to clip off about 1.5 feet of the end of the leader. when you tie on the frog hair, it replaces the 6x portion you cut off and so you would add 3 ft of frog hair to compensate.
  20. michael has them or at least has one at backcountry
  21. me too...i touched snow when i was in steamboat on saturday.
  22. There is a guy that fishes that fly religously at taney with good success also.
  23. We finally got back home last night around 9pm. The show was freakin awesome. To be among all of the greats of flyfishing was a treat in itself. Meeting people like...Jim Vincent, Joan Wulff, Randall Kauffman, Jim Teeny, Dave Perkins, just to name a few. And then all of the brand new stuff for 2007. Here are some of my takes on the new gear. First off the Simms waders...Retail $699. A WASTE OF MONEY. there are only 2 differences in those and the G3's. the main difference is the zipper in front. then there are a couple zingers, and fly patches on t he front and thats it...deffinitely not worth 700 bones. another thing that a lot of the companys are coming out with are a knee high flats type boot for waders. Tons of new flies are out this year just like always. Lamson Waterworks has a new line of reels out also. and they were the take of the show. They are extremely light compared to the older ones. Michael....the new color is a bronze/copper color and its not really the color that is the "new thing". It has a Hard Alox finish. it gives the barstock aluminum a stronger coating. i bought the litespeed large arbor. The new velocity is awesome also. all the components of the reels are the same, but they are almost half as light as the old models. They still retail at the same prices as the older models. and im sure everyone is going to wonder about the new z axis rods. Truely amazing. they retail (590-4) for 650. These rods are deffinitely not meant for casting and indicator rig. If you want a rod that is a work horse, and that will pickup and load quick for casting dries, or for some good old highsticking then this rod will be for you. when i casted it, i could pick up 60 feet of line no problem. orvis has made an improvement on the rocky mountain reel, and they have come out with a new battenkill large arbor reel also. those were the major changes in things, if you have any questions let me know.
  24. looks like a peacock caddis with foam and rubber legs
