The wife and I went fishing at Montauk with the Ozark Flyfishers this last weekend. Friday we hit the water at around 11am in the fly area. Fished hard till about 7:30. Caught lots of fish, I caught them mainly on flourescent fire orange san juan worm, pheasant tail nymph size 18 , and a red zebra midge size 18 with black wire ribbing and a gunmetal bead. My wife caught most of hers on a tri colored glo ball she bought at the lodge with a yellow head. Late evening there was a big hatch, fish were sipping the surface everywhere, appeared to be a little black bodied bug with white wings in a size 30-32. I put on a black mosquito I had tied with grizzly hackle and caught a few on it. There was almost too many bugs on the water to get them to hit my larger offering regularly. Saturday we slept in and hit the water at noon. Again the red zebra midge and san juan were the ticket. I bought the san juan at the lodge, so if you get down there you can get the orange san juan color there and compare color. I took the san juan to the fly shop and was able to match the color and bought some chennille to match so I can tie my own. I also caught fish on a brown wd-40 size 18. We only fished for about 4 hours Sat. Ozark Flyfishers had their buffet Sat. night, the food was catered by the lodge, great meal. We tied flies together as a club afterwards in the searcy room across the road from the lodge. Sunday we got out at 12:30 pm and fished till 4pm. The wife limited out at 4pm, we decided to keep a limit each for some fresh trout to eat. She caught hers on tri colored glo ball and a white glo ball. I probably caught 20 fish, all on red zebra midge, orange san juan, olive wooly bugger and lime green san juan. Probably missed another 30 strikes on red zebra, they were hitting light and I wasnt quick enough on the set, strike indicator would barely wobble and I had on a very small indicator. it was a great weekend of fishing. Will try to post some pics later. The water was low and clear. I used Maxima 2 lb ultragreen tippet all weekend. Dennis

Fished Mon. and Tues. at Montauk in the park. Fishing was good. Fish liked motion in the fly, got lots of bites as I was pulling the line to start the next cast. copper copper johns worked well, green and red san juan worms, olive woolies also were good choices. I didnt fish any egg patterns but my fishing buddies did real well on them. Couldnt get much dry fly action but did catch a few on mosquitos and cracklebacks. I had a lot of fish rise to my dry fly and at the last minute abort. Water is very low and clear, have to use light tippet. I use maxima ultragreen 2lb. Will be headed back to Montauk Aug 22-24 and Sept 5-7, so more reports coming.

The wife and i had a great weekend fishing the park. She usually catches a few fish each day, this time she caught well over her limit both days. We didnt keep any trout, all catch and release. All were average trout park fish, no big ones. She caught most of hers on egg patterns. I was working on my casting and concentrated mainly on dry flies. Thanks Timsfly for your beetle fly recipe, caught a few on them. Size 20 griffiths gnat done the trick for most of my dry catches. Caught some on a crackleback fished dry. As far as wet flies, caught some on a white thread jig, pheasant tail and a red san juan worm. We usually didnt get out till almost noon so fish were pretty picky but we caught them fairly steady, had to keep switching up alot. I bought some SA Sharkskin line for the Orvis Battenkill reel my wife won at The Ozarkflyfisher meeting. I fell in love with this line, it casts well, is very flexible, and floats really well. Downside was that it cost $100. Well worth it from what I have seen so far, casts much better than the SA Mastery line I bought last year. I would recommend this line to anyone who has the extra cash to try it out. It does make more noise going through the guides but its castability makes it worth it in my opinion. Go to your local fly shop and give it a try. disclaimer: I get no kickbacks from the sale of this line, just was impressed how it improved my poor casting abilities. lol I also got to meet Don. He stopped by our campsite at Eagles Park, he was staying there also. Got to spend some time telling stories and enjoying some brews. Next time I hope to get some fishing in with you. Maybe you can show us the ropes at Taney or Roaring River, two places I havent got to fish yet. Some pics: And for JJ, We got some non-defective wood

My wife suprised me yesterday by booking us a slot at Eagles Park for a weekend of fishing and pure relaxation. I will be fishing Sat and Sun, anyone else going? I have a great wife! Will fish the fly area and maybe the trophy waters, if I'm lucky.

I drove past there the last time I was at Bennett, looked fairly nice. When you going? Maybe CadillaCricket will provide more info.

First Time On The Nfow
hfdhoosier replied to Kansas Fly Fisher's topic in North Fork of the White River
Glad to hear you had a great time. My first and only time on the NFOW was similar. It was before I joined this great forum and I was clueless on how to fish the river. I will agree, the river and scenery is just plain beautiful. How did you do at Bennett and Montauk. Sorry we missed you at Bennett. Take care brother. -

No Luck: You have helped me out both times we have fished together at Bennett. Just friendly razzing from me. It's a compliment, it isn't just luck that you catch alot of fish, alot of it is skill and experience fishing Bennett. I haven't figured how to fish the deeper water, I usually fish at Montauk. I hope the comments didn't offend you. Would fish with you anytime. -
Supreme Court Upholds 2nd Amendment...

Cause they haven't found any terrorists in Iraq.......sarcasm I agree with Trav...we took the war to them and kept them from hitting us again on our soil. How much did it cost to lose the Trade Centers? -
Wow! Hope you get out of the bad luck funk soon. Did you reschedule another trip? You need a vacation after all this.

Jerry: Still tough fishing for me on Sun. Caught 5 fish but 3 was in the last half hour before I quit (5:30 pm) on a white thread jig upriver from the bluff. I agree, No Luck might have bad luck at a lot of things but catching fish aint one of them. We pulled out at 7pm Sun., we paid for an extra day of camping so we could take our time packing up and get some more fishing in. Didnt want to have to find a parking lot big enough for my truck and camper. That put us home at 11pm last night. Sheila had to work today but I got to sleep in. She slept on the ride home tho. I had a great time, need to start planning the next trip. -

It was tough fishing for me but I managed to catch a few. Caught fish on black zebra midge, wd-40, red brassie size 20, light orange glo ball, white glo ball, white thread jig (mine is made with white wire instead of thread). Had a great time, got to meet Cadillacricket for the first time and got back together with JJTroutbum, No Luck, and rcguy. Fishing was tough for all except No Luck, He is the master!! Food was good at Ollies and the Lodge. Camping was great in loop 5. Bought some defective wood, JJ said theres no such thing as defective wood, but this stuff would not burn. Went through half a bottle of charcoal lighter and jj had a fan to blow on the fire to keep it burning. Finally burnt well after we built up a heap of coals. Rained Fri, night into Sat. but was still fishable. Water was up and moving fast. Im ready for the next get together. I think a great time was had by all. Bought some SA Sharkskin line at Readings for my wifes Pflueger Trion rod (8' 6" 5 wt) with the Orvis Battenkill reel she won at the Ozarkflyfishers' raffle. She didn't care for the setup much, I really liked it. The sharkskin line casted very well, Im sold on it. We received some casting lessons at Readings, I've got a lot of practicing to do. I didn't realize my casting was that bad until I got the lesson. -

Im heading for Bennett this afternoon from Illinois. JJ called me and he got us a site in loop 5 at Bennett (538). Probably wont get to fish today after setting up my camper but will be ready for Sat and Sun. No wager for me, seems like every time I bet on fishing it ruins the whole experience. See ya all soon, Im ready to hit the stream. -
It will definitely be a fun time, the fishing is just a bonus! See ya all this weekend.

Cadilla: Coming in late Fri night or early Sat morning, would be willing to take you up on the Sun morning offer. Is the areas you speak of fly fishable? I have never fished the river and am eager to learn some tricks from you.
-
Puffydisc: I had the best luck on light orange (golden mcflyfoam), orange mcflyfoam, yellow chartreuse, wapsi green chartreuse, and light yellow (mccheese mcflyfoam). Also had luck on white mcflyfoam at Tan Vat outside the park. Good luck to you this weekend.

I have never fished the Little Piney, but usually blue ribbon waters allow you to keep one fish over 18 inches per day. Always wanted to fish the Little Piney, interested in hearing your report. The place you stay at could probably give you the best info on the river. Good luck, steer clear of any banjo music. haha

I plan on being there the 28th and 29th. That is my scheduled weekend off at work so as long as I dont get forced into work I will be there. Might head down Fri night but probably wont get there till after dark.
