Very nice fish Phill!! You said you floated it, so I am guessing the water is not too high. Is the water up at all? is it floatable in a canoe? I noticed you used drift boats. Kyle

Lots of tricos. And a few Caddis but not a whole bunch.

Good to hear you did well, because I got my butt kicked. Caught 6 fish I think of Friday from Tan Vat to Baptist. 2 were about 6 inches, 1 about 8, 2 about 12, and 1 brown about 15. Just couldn't figure them out. Threw everything I had. I did break one off that felt like a nice fish, but never saw him so . . . Kyle

If you are looking to buy flies I would go to Reeds cabin just outside the park. The people that own it are pretty knowledgeable and friendly. Besides I would rather support a small business than a corporation. IMO.

I am heading down to fish Thursday night, Friday and Saturday morning. I was curious if the browns run up stream like they do in Taney and if so, how far and where they might hold? Any hot patterns? Also, if anyone is going to be arround say hi. I usually wear a BPS hat. Kyle

Roubidoux Creek, Mill Creek Or Little Piney?
Kyle replied to Kyle's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
Well, I decided on the Little Piney Creek and got to the river about 6:15 am at the Turner Springs access. I fished for about 5 hours and only managed one fish that was about 6 inches long. Poor little thing still had par marks on it. Nice river though and never saw another person all day. I think that I may need some more coaching before I go next time. Kyle -
Roubidoux Creek, Mill Creek Or Little Piney?

Thanks for the imput guys, I'll let you know how it goes. Kyle -
Going fishing next weekend and leaving friday morning. Going to fish Lake Taneycomo on Sat and Sun with Randall. So, I figured on my way down I would hit one of Missouri's smaller waters. I have never fished Roubidoux, Mill, or the Little Piney. Anyone have a good reason to pick one over another? I have fished the Current and Meremac so I have a little knowledge on fishing outside the parks. So, I guess what I am getting at is: 1. Which of the three would you pick and why? 2. Tips on any of the three. I am comming from St. Louis. I will be using a fly rod. I catch and release. thanks for your suggestions Kyle

Heading down tonight fishing the river tomorrow morning and both the river and park the rest of the weekend. If anyone is going to be arround say HI. Both my girlfriend and I will be wearing green waders and Bass Pros Shops hats. And hopefully catching lots of fish. Kyle

xp 590, I too am looking forward to some big browns in the fall. I saw one come down the river in the riffles right at daylight that must have been 10 pounds or better, but he did not appear to be interested in my streamer. Kyle

Does anyone have any recipes for some stoneflys? I am especially interestred in ones that are hot on the current river.

From what I have heard they will not stock any new species or new rivers untill they figure out what is happening with the Hellbender. Apparently their numbers are dropping like crazy.

Sorry it is kinda late, but this is the first chance I had to post. Left from STL on Monday night and arrived at Tan Vat arround 7. This is the first time I have ever fished the Current. Wound up catching three 2 browns and 1 bow. I had never caught a brown before so you can imagine my excitement. Caught one on a red San Juan worm, one on a rusty midge and one on a sneaky pete. The one on the pete had hit my float the cast before so I decided I was going to out smart him and it worked. Nice 15 inch brown right at dark. Here is a funny and almost tragic story: I packed up and head into Salem. I get all the way to the intersectioin of 119 and 32 (I think it is) and realize that my flyrod is not sticking up beside me in the passanger seat of my blazer. I had left it sitting on the roof of my car when I pulled out of the Tan Vat parking lot. I turn around and drive all the way back in a cold panic. Right before the low-water bridge on the county road there lays my rod in the middle of the road! You can imagine my relief. Anyway disaster avoided and I get to the place I am staying in Salem. I head back to the river around 5 am and get there just before light. I put a streamer and start casting and stripping. Nailed 4 in about 15 min. 3 brown and 2 rainbow. I decide to walk up to the "rock garden". (Quite a hike might I add.) I caught 3 more browns up there when the sky gets dark and I decide it is not safe to be on the water. I head back to the truck to wait it out. After the thunder and lightning had passed I headed down to Baptist Camp and caught 2 cuttbows there on San Juans and one more bow. The fishing had slowed and it was about 2 so I packed up and headed home. I had a absolute great time fishing the Current and now finally know what all of the fuss is about. 11 fish in about 2 days for my first time I thought was pretty respectable and my first brown and cuttbow. I only saw one other fisherman the whole time I was there. Very relaxing and I will definately be back as soon as possible. Thanks for reading eventhough it is kind of long. Kyle ps. only one pic of my first brown because of the rain and no water proof camera.

Troutfly69, I will not be much help either considering it is my first trip fishing the current. But, I would like to get together and exchange some knowledge. PM me if you are intrestred. Kyle

I am going to be down Monday evening and Tuesday most of the day. Was just wondering if anyone was going to be arround? Probably mostly up by Tan Vat, but maybe baptist camp. Also, anyone have any hot tips? Kyle

I didn't know exactly where to put this topic.\ There is a pond that I fish for bass and bluegill with the flyrod that is about 2 acres. It has been getting more and more moss every year and now is about 1/4 covered with it. It makes it challenging to land fish and not nearly as fun, since when the get into the moss the fight is pretty much over because you just drag them in. I was looking for some remedys. I was thinking about just puting on my waders and rounding a bunch of it up and pulling it out, but is only a temprary fix. Was wondering if a carp of 2 might do it and not hurt the pond life? Any suggestions would be greatly welcome. Kyle

I looked through the old posts, but could not seem to find the number for the corp of engineers that gives the info on the water being released for Truman and LOZ. I had it in my old phone, but you know how that goes. Also if anyone has any hot tips, I am always listening. I will be there on Friday and plan on fishing from the bank. Kyle

That shot at half time was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. It never seems to happen for the teams I root for, but they sure looked good last night. I really think that they can beat UCON tomorrow. The Tigers beind in the tourney for this long has sure made it a lot more interestring. Also, it might help to keep Mike Anderson arround for awile, they really seem to think Alabama is gonna go after him. Would be a shame to loose him.

Just got back from Bennett today. I, like many here, am not all that intrestred in fishing the trout parks, but I was taking my girlfriend trout fishing for the first time. I know that putting people on fish is the best way to get them intrestred so what better place that Bennett because in past years I have had many, if not most, days of 25+ fish. It rained most of the day Saturday and we only fished for a couple of hours. I caught 4 and she caught 1 (which was a very nice 15 incher). We had to work hard for our fish. I agree with some on this post that seem to think that there are less fish in the stream. It is fairly easy to tell when one looks under the bridge in zone 2 or at the granny hole above the dam and there are very few instead of the usual giant black mobs of fish. The parks are a great place to introduce someone to the sport and I agree that the fish numbers should be high. If people catch fish and think they are too small they will throw them back, but it is better for a newbe to catch a bunch of small ones that to only catch one fish all day. Kyle

I talked to a fella at Cabela's in St. Louis the other day and explained to him how I was experiencing problems breaking off my hackles when trying to tie dry flies. He said it may be my hackle pliers cutting them. I told him that I had the type with rubber on one side and the metal disc on the other. He suggested to me that I get the other kind of pliers and put some heat shrink on one of the jaws. I have not tried them yet, but was wondering if anyone has ever done this?? Also if anyone has any other little tricks that seem to make the oridnary tools work better I would like to hear them. Kyle

Hey guys thanks again for all of the info. TroutFearMe and I meet in the morning and walked all the way up too the park and fished our way back to Caradiac. It was really a great day and the trout cought (eventhough there weren't a whole lot) were absolutely beautiful fish. White tipped fins and fought like they double their size. The hill was not as bad as I had feared but was well worth its namesake. The hot ticket was mostly San Juans and fast water.

Thaks for all of the info guys I appreciate it. I am not all that worried about the canoe hatch on a Friday this time of year. TroutFearMe, if you would like to go Friday PM me tonight or tomorrow with your number. I am planning on leaving here arround 5 so that should put me there arround 6:15-30 . Kyle

I am off work Friday and have decided it has been too long since my last fishing expedition, so I am going to the Meremac. I really want to fish below the park (unless the consincus is that the water is too high?). I have never been there before and am looking for tips. I have read almost all of the old posts on the site and found some directions but would like to know if it is better to go up stream or down, how far it is up to where the spring comes in, any fly suggestions for this time of year? I have floated this streach of river before and seem to remember there is quite a bit of dead water between the riffles. Are they worth fishing with a streamer and sink tip line? Maybe a smallmouth or two? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone is interestred in going I am planning on leaving from the Wentzville/ New Melle area early in the morning. I will likely be gone most of the day and wouldn't mind having someone that knows what they are doing to show me the ropes. Kyle

Thanks guys for the imput, still looking for some opinions on the vise.

Looking to expand my flytying from scuds and San Juans. I have been reading many fly recipies and have time and again seen goose biots come up. What exactly is a biot and is it possible to get your own off of geese? I am a fairly avid goose hunter and it would be kind of neat to harvest my own as opposed to shelling out the whole 2 dollars that one costs, lol. Also, I do a fair amount of duck, pheasant and quail hunting. Is there anything I should/could be keeping off of these birds to make flies commonly used on Missouri waters? Also, I am curently using a vise that as far as I can tell is from arround the 1960's. I got it when my grandfather passed away in 90. It is a stationary vise and I was wondering if all of the hype over the rotary vises is warrented. Are they that much better/easier? If so are there any out there that don't cost a small fortuine? Kyle
