Caught a beautiful day on sunday around 60 degrees and I was down visiting my parents in the cape fair area. I convinced my dad to head to the lake for a few hours in the afternoon and ended up being a pretty good evening. We caught crappie sporatically around standing timber on in anywhere from 9 to 2 feet of water. We ran up the James river arm almost as far as we could go. Be careful up there right now, the water is so low its pretty easy to run into a mud flat.......I'm speaking from experience. Anyway the bite was decent. In total between my dad, brother, and me we caught probably 20 crappie total. Only 6 that were long enough to keep. We were throwing swimming minnows in silver and chartruese. Grey seemed to work the best. We talked to a couple different fisherman that were throwing live minnows and they both had a nice stringer of fish. My dad only caught one on a minnow so don't know their secret. They didn't like to speak about it much. Anyway I'm a Police Officer from St. Louis that grew up for 22 years down there and I miss the lakes the most. I always try to make my way down during the white bass run as well as the crappie spawn. I will be taking some vacation in the coming months.
I might be fishing during the week in the coming months and will be fishing by myself more than likely. If anyone wants to join me Ill post when I'm coming down.
