  1. The reason they don't stock Cedar to Welch via the river during the summer is because it gets too low for their stocking boat. They stock this stretch at driveable access points when it's too low. Yes, that's where the old asthma/tb hospital is. I'm sure you could find a campsite near there. Although, people can walk to it and I prefer camping on a gravel bar that folks can't walk or drive into my camping area. You may be alright during the week though.
  2. Tito's vodka can go head to head with any of the worlds' greats and not break a sweat.
  3. Floated Cedar Grove down to a gravel bar past Welch Spring Saturday July 28th. We camped on the gravel bar Sat night and floated out to Akers on Sunday. Sunday's float was great! Didn't see another soul on the river. Saw deer, turkeys, 5 otters (boo), 2 armadillos (boo), and caught a few trout. Saturday was a whole different animal. I saw jello shots, beer bongs, people jumping off cliffs, people in the spring, a fight at Welch Spring with small children nearby, glass beer bottles but I didn't see a ranger unfortunately. I forgot how many idiots there are on a Saturday during the summer. I sent an email to the NPS stating what I saw. Just letting them know. I know they are trying to make it better but Welch Spring on a Saturday is a huge party spot. I would think that a ranger would be there at all times. I know they can't be everywhere all the time and that they are trying to make the river better and I applaud them for that. Fishing was REALLY tough. I only caught 3 and they were small.
  4. Put in at hwy 8 bridge Friday afternoon. The river was up a foot or so and murky. Caught 1 smallie on the way to the trout waters. At the confluence of the springs, hooked into a nice rainbow which ended up breaking my line. Didn't get to fish much here since it was getting late and we needed to set up camp. Camped at the confluence of Dry Fork Creek. Fished Sat morning upstream of camp. Caught 3 nice 'bows and broke my line again. Those rainbows were a blast in that fast water. I had 2 lb test on since the rivers have been gin clear (besides this trip). I wish I would have switched to 4 lb test. We set up camp between Cardiac and Suicide. Floating in, caught a brown just up from camp against those downed trees along the bank and a bow right at camp. Caught another brown at camp awhile later. Then walked upstream and had a rainbow break my dang line again so I was done for the day. Time for happy hour! Broke camp Sunday morning and caught one brown at Suicide and that was it. All in all, the fishing was pretty decent. All were caught on rapalas.

On the Current, there's numerous places you could camp. Tan Vat, aka swimming hole just down from Montauk, Montauk State Park, Parker Hollow, and Cedar Grove to name a few. All except the state park, the camping is free I believe.
