  1. Camping can be a little dicey in January/ February And you DO NOT want to tip
  2. Thanks guys... I'm not sure if I'm gonna make an offer or not. I just plunked down some dough on a 3wt combo, and I'm a little cash poor. Still, I bet I could get it for $600... maybe even $500. If I could get $350 or $400 for my Disco, that'd be a pretty affordable upgrade!
  3. A year or so ago I upgraded from an aluminum canoe to an Old Town Discovery 169. I really like the boat, and I anticipate many happy years with it. Day trips mostly, 1 or 2 overnighters a year. Flat water and Ozark streams. BUT You know how it goes... a guy at work has an Appalachian that he bought new a year or two ago, and now he's a very motivated seller. The grass is always greener, no? So, I'm looking for opinions on the merits of trading up, and also what the Appalachian might be worth (used maybe 10 times). thanks!
  4. Sam, I drove by Kdock today and you can still launch off the end of the road... might be a problem after another foot or two is lost. I've heard folks can launch opposite River Run, off of Y hwy. River run itself would not be adviseable. I also heard last month's striper record may have been broken already!
  5. I wound up with the combo for $300 even... I'm a happy dude!
  6. A guy at work let me borrow a 2-piece Winston 3 wt. It is an 8 footer, and it is a dark forest green color which I take it to be a WT model. It is good to excellent condition. It is combined with a Ross Canyon reel. Man, he's a good salesman because after a week with it I cannot imagine going back to my stiff St. Croix 5 wt. Anyways, the condition of the combo is used but good to excellent. He's been wanting to sell it to me, but wants me to make an offer. I'm almost afraid to ask, but what might be a good starting offer? thanks a bunch.
  7. Hey all, getting ready for a road trip with the kids... the daughter wants to bring her laptop so her and her brother can watch some DVDs and etc. Any recommendations on wattage and brand of DC inverters would be most welcome, thanks! Ken
  8. It was a great float Brian. My 13 yr old split time between the front of the canoe, and a little Otter we rented. Even with all the canoe traffic he caught several smallmouth & goggleye above McKee, and a handful of those amazing wild rainbows the rest of the way. The folks at Sunburst are just as nice as has been advertised... but... the place was a little rowdy for families IMO. If I still can't convince the wif of the merits of gravel bar camping, I think we'll try camping at ROLF next time. Mebbe float down from TB.
  9. Ha! Actually, we got the green one from ya. Hey Brian, I was just looking at the USGS link, and it looks like the river didn't get much of a "bump" from all that rain last night and this morning... was there really no spike? My bones are too brittle for white water
  10. That's a nice little float, though I could do without carrying the canoe up the hill at the takeout! We plan to camp at Sunburst Friday and Sat nights, and float Sat from Hammond back to camp. Looks like the river is getting pounded pretty hard by storms right now though... sheesh, what a summer!
  11. I occasionally put the boat in at Empire Park in the evening, and fly cast to the risers at dusk. I generally will strip olive or black leach or maribou patterns (small), or maybe a crackleback. I get alot of short strikes, and the window of opportunity is generally pretty small (last hour or so of light) to make it worthwhile, but it's something to do I reckon.
  12. I've got the bug to spend this Sat night on a gravel bar... I'm thinking there ought to still be enough water above Twin Bridges(?) Are there good camping spots up there? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.
  13. Hey Phil, thought if you get a chance you might want to add a USGS link to the Beaver Creek (Upper BS) topic: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07054080 Ken
  14. Guys, there is a gauge at Bradleyville: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07054080 Beaver Creek has been floating well this June.
  15. Hey guys, sorry I didn't follow up. I replaced the cap and rotor, and it ran much better. So: cap and rotor and wires and plugs and EGR valve all told. I took it into the shop to check the codes... there was a miss and there was an O2 sensor code. They reset it, and the O2 sensor code hasn't come back yet. It's not running perfect... I haven't yet replaced the O2 sensors (I count 5?) but I will eventually get around to it.
  16. Great reading Al, thanks for posting. Ken
  17. Well, the check engine light finally came on last night... the truck is running progressively worse. Lucky for me, I work about 0.8 miles from home. It goes to the shop on Wed. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll let you all know what the deal was. sheesh, maybe I'll get 20mpg after this is all done!
  18. Thanks for the report CMF! I need to get down there... anybody know what the launch situation is across the ferry at Buck Creek?
  19. I certainly don't want to speculate about this incident in particular, but I couldn't agree more with Al. I have been struck on more than a few occasions by folks who approach a float trip like they are getting on an amusement park ride. That said, this is a horribly sad story... thoughts and prayers on the way
  20. Well, I just replaced the egr valve... It seems to be idling better, but once in gear and accelerating from a stop it is still pretty rough. Looks like I might be headed for the shop.
  21. Thanks Joby, but I don't think that's it. I drove it a bit today, it runs pretty well on the highway, it's idling horrible. It's lost some power too, but it doesn't seem to be missing (especially at about 35 mph or better). I was hoping some bad gas (I know how that can be), but no. Maybe an O2 sensor, but shouldn't that cause the dummy light to come on?
  22. Here's an interesting problem for you mechanics out there... The truck has a 5.7L Vortec engine with about 100,000 miles... has always run well. I was driving in a bit of traffic when it very suddenly began running rough, and a strong sulfur smell filled the air. It got me home, and I've had it out since for the short trip to Oreillys. The sulfur smell seems to be gone, but the truck acts like it's only running on 7 cylinders. No "check engine" light has appeared. I've replaced plugs and wires so far. Any ideas? thanks a bunch
  23. my boy and I saw one last summer on an early foggy morning near Empire Park... swimming along just below the surface right next to the boat... probably 5 feet long or better. surprised the heck out of us
  24. Nobody I know has been putting into BS around Forsyth... not sure where you would, maybe Beaver Creek park and boat up towards the pothole(?). I'm trying not to think about it... too depressing... I'm catching up on honey-dos, and taking the canoe out more.
  25. Drove by powersite today... the water color was great. It really is amazing, the water (I'm guessing 4 units from TR?) is only dropping about 3 or 4 feet or so over the dam. Maybe even less. There are remnants of the splash boards still there, and they are all snaggled up. If they took em out, I would have no doubt somebody in a kayak or even a canoe could safely traverse it.
